Tatum....AGAIN Sorry guys, this is going to be really LONG...it's going to take a while to explain everything. As some of you may know from the thread I started, Tatum had a tooth fall out last week. Well, on Tuesday of this week my husband and I went out to pick up something for lunch (we were gone all of 20-25 minutes) and when we came back home we noticed right away that little Tatum's face was SO PUFFY and swollen. Her right eye was almost swollen shut and she literally looked like she had little Chipmunk cheeks because they were so puffy  It looked cute no doubt, but it scared me half to DEATH! I just cannot figure out what could of happened in the 20-25 minutes that we were gone....it was the WEIRDEST thing! Anyway, I gave her some Benadryl and the swelling started going down within 20 minutes or so and she was fine. I would have taken her to the vet but she was acting 100% normal (begging for food, running, jumping, bright pink healthy gums, etc.) so we thought that we would try the Benadryl first and thank God it did the trick and she was ok. However, the next day I noticed that she wasn't eating and I picked her up and her little stomach was growling like crazy! I tried to offer her food and she wouldn't take it. Then I gave her a teeny tiny little soft chewy treat and she took it, but she was only chewing it on the left side of her mouth (she wouldn't chew on the right side AT ALL) and normally it takes her all of a split second to wolf down a treat...and she was literally chewing on it for 20 minutes and STILL hadn't eaten it (mind you this treat was teeny tiny). So then, I decided that OBVIOUSLY shes teething and her mouth is hurting her. So I went and bought her some canned food, plain yogurt, cottage cheese, and even canned pumpkin....just anything soft to try and get her to eat. Well, she ate some but not a whole lot. Her ears were getting floppy again like they were when we got bit by all the ants  and I just knew that she wasn't feeling good so I called the vet and made an appointment to bring her in that same day (this was Wednesday, so just 2 days ago). We went in and he looked at her and said that her adult teeth have started to come in, but her baby teeth are of course still in there and the adult teeth are probably just pushing on them and it's hurting her. So, I asked him to PLEASE give her some pain meds because I cannot stand to see her like this when I know shes hurting and there is absolutely nothing that I can do about it. And the poor baby...I KNOW she's hungry because I can hear her little stomach growling and she will walk over to her food bowl and just look at it and then slowly walk away  She WANTS to eat it but she just can't. Oh my goodness, it TOTALLY BREAKS MY HEART. So anyway, she has been on soft foods (I have been hand feeding her with a spoon) and our vet also gave her some pain meds - but she can only have it once a day for 3 days as it is VERY strong and HIGHLY concentrated. He said that these pain meds should keep her pain level down for about a week, and if after a week she is still acting like she is in pain and she is not able to eat her hard food, then we need to bring her in and have some teeth pulled  I just don't know what to do though because she really does need to be spayed at the same time that she is having her teeth pulled so that we can get it all done in one shot - however, the last time I took her to the vet (not a couple of days ago, but the time before that) our vet said that he didn't want to spay her until she was around 9 months of age due to her size...and right now she is only 7 months. Granted, the vet that we saw a couple of days ago when we took her in was a NEW vet that just started working up at our regular vets office a couple of weeks ago (this new vet just helps out our regular vet because our regular vet stays so busy), so I don't know what to do. I guess I will just have to talk to our regular vet and see what he says. I just feel SO BAD for my little girl and I absolutely HATE that she is in pain, it just kills me! Yesterday it seemed like she was doing a little better but now today she isn't doing so great :( She has turned down EVERY single thing I have offered her so far and hasn't eaten a single thing all day long and it is 3:00 p.m. here. She gets her pain meds in 30 minutes so I am going to give that a while to kick in and if she still won't eat then I am just going to have to syringe feed her and give her some Nutri-Cal, which she has been getting anyway since she hasn't been eating hardly anything at all. I tell you, this little girl scares me so bad! She DOES NOT need to lose anymore weight, she is tiny enough as it is! And I know that my poor little girl is hungry because I can HEAR her stomach just growling away :( She will just stand there and watch Stedman eat his food and I swear it makes me want to cry  I know shes hungry and she wants to eat but she just can't because it hurts her :( Her poor little ears are flopped all the way down and she just isn't feeling well AT ALL. This little girl has given me SO MANY scares I swear. Lately it just seems like it is one thing after another :( Please say a prayer for her and pray that she starts feeling better and that she starts EATING. She is in my lap right now and is just so "out of it"...... I am going to go get her pain meds ready and then try and feed her  All of your prayers really are greatly appreciated... |
Aww, poor little thing:( Prayers coming out from Utah! |
awwww, the poor baby! I hope she starts to feel better soon! I didnt even know when my boys lost their teeth... I never saw anything and they never stopped eating so I had no idea. Thats really sad though! Poor baby! My prayers are with her! |

awww....poor baby Tatum! It's so sad to have to watch them in pain.....I'm sorry she's having such a tough time with her teeth. Hugs to you both..... |
Poor baby Tantum. What can be worse than a toothache! Many at that with all her big girl teeth trying to break through. Brooke, I wish her well and hope she feels better real fast with the meds. Eat little girl. You need your strength. |
Oh, poor baby! It makes me want to cry just reading your thread! I'm praying for her! |
Poor little lambchop! I hope she will be better soon. She -- and you -- have had too many health issues to deal with lately. Thoughts and prayers headed your way. |
OHH POOR BABY i know about teeth frankie is having his pulled today to while he is being netured and im scared to death, the vet also wanted to wait for him to get to at least 6 pounds or one year old and he is 6 pounds and a year next month so he took him in but im so scared about what to do after wards uhhh i am losing my mind, its like having a child in the doctors office but i hope she feels better and maybe they can do something about her teeth and help the poor dear out, she needs some food poor baby |
Oh! This is terrible, poor sweetheart. I know you can't stand to watch her in pain. What about that stuff for human babies that they rub on the gums when babies are teething - could you try that? Can't think of what it's called. I'm wracking my brain about how to get her to eat/what to eat - and I can't think of anything you haven't already tried. What about baby food? What about baby rice cereal, sweetened up? |
ahh iam so sorry she is in so much pain:( sending you both prayers.i sure hope she gets better real soon. |
Poor Tatum!!! We hope she feels better really soon. Sissy & Angel send big kisses to Tatum (and Steddy, too)!!!!!! Please let us know if we can do anything for you Brooke. |
Oh no! Poor baby. I know that she will feel better when you give hre pain medicine, and she will eat when you give her soft food like rice and chicken. We will say a prayer for her. I am so sorry she is going through this..:( .... I know it just breaks your heart when you see your baby sick, give her a big hug for me... |
First let me say I am sooo sorry for lil Tatum...Poor lil angel. How big is she?? Im going to take Diggy to the vet right now...This vet spayed and pulled Bellas teeth atthe same time at 6 months. She was very little! She also did my sisters baby at 6 months and Ada was small too. Im going to ask what exact weight Bella was at time of spay and what they used to sedate her. Im thinking Bella was 2-3 pounds. Ill fine out for sure and tell her Tatums story and see what she says. |
Oh Poor baby I am praying for her. Have you tried givng her liquidy baby food that she could just lap up? Chicken broth would be good for her too or some chicken noodle soup |
ooh the poor baby, it kills me to know a baby is in pain, i would take her back to reg. or a new vet and have it taken care of, spaying and teeth ! Just how little is she ? Sounds like she cant afford to loose any more weight. Please give her lots of kisses, prayers coming your way ! |
Poor thing. I know how worried you are because I went through the same thing with Chance last week because his teeth were hurting him. It took him 3 days before he bounced back and I was like you and worried about his weight. He barely weighs 3 lbs as it is and he got down to a little over 2 1/2 and that is scary when they are already small. At least with the bigger guys you dont have to sweat is quite as bad as with these little ones. |
Oh Tatum we are sooo sorry to hear you are not feeling good!!:( I know how hard it is to have these little guys not feeling well and not have them be able to tell you what it is!!! I will send prayers for little Tatum to get real well real soon!! Poor baby, just wondering if you have tried giving her baby food from a jar? (Gerbers little jars for human babies). |
Okay back from the vet....Bella was 3.1 pounds at time of spay and teeth extraction. She had like 10 teeth pulled and was home that very night eating canned food! She didnt even have to spend the night :D My vet felt that getting Tatum out of pain is the main concern right now, and she has to eat. She recommended having a test ran before to see if she will react to the anesthetic also a test ran on her liver. She did use the technical names but there was a big Bassett Hound in the waiting room howling louder than I have ever heard at Bella and Diggy so i was trying to listen and calm the babies at the same time...Did'nt get the names but got the gist of the tests. I hope that helps in your decision. ;) |
Awww Brook, sorry Tatum is not feeling well again. How much does she weigh? My vet was the same way, she did not want to spay Lillie till she was 3lbs or 1 yr and she reached 1yr before 3lbs, she may never reach 3 lbs. I hope she get's to feeling better, bless her lil heart! Hugs to you! |
I will be praying for baby Tatum. I hope she is feeling better soon. |
These babies really do have their problems once in awhile, but poor little Tatum has had more than her share lately. I do hope she doesn't need surgery on her teeth, but if they have to put her under for that will they spay her at the same time? She is so tiny. I'd worry too. |
I'm so sorry that Tatum is having such a hard time right now!! I feel terrible for her :( If they do surgery for the teeth, they should do the spay at the same time. My maltese Emma was just over 6 months old and weighed 2.9lbs when she was spayed and she did okay. I don\'t know how bit Tatum is though. They should use sevoflourane or isoflourane gas. They wake up very quickly after surgery this way... |
Oh man! poor lil Tatum :( I hope her pain goes away soon... are you sure its just cuz of her teeth growing in? and not like a stomach pain or something? poor baby:( ... hope she feels better and gets well soon!!!!!! |
Poor little girl! Honestly, Brooke, if the teeth are hurting her that bad, they need to go ahead and come out. They really don\'t give them even hardly as much anesthetic as they do for a spaying. In fact, when I got Hootie\'s teeth pulled, they gave her a little gas, got the teeth out surprisingly quick, and I was able to wait on her and take her home in no time. The whole visit was about 30 minutes. So, keep that in mind to consider.......... Hope your little girl GETS WELL SOON! Hugs from all of us in Alabama! |
Oh Brooke, I\'m so sorry Tatum is going through this. I bet your a nervous wreck :( You know what I went through with Pia and her not weighing even 2 lbs. when they put her under to be spayed and teeth pulled :( I so wish I could offer some advice right now. It\'s been awhile since then but I remember the ER vet telling me that spaying Pia and having her teeth pulled at the same time was too much for her size. The ER vet was disgusted by the vet that did Pia\'s surgery. :( This ER vet was the first I ever heard say about not having teeth and spay done at the same time. I always thought getting everything done at once would be better. However, I\'ve never had a dog the size of Pia before either. I just wish I could help you in some way. If your looking for more opinions from other vets and would like me to call mine, just let me know. That ER vet became my new vet and is wonderful. She literally saved Pia\'s life. I hope poor Tate is feeling better soon. Give her kisses from all of us. |
Poor baby:( I"m so sorry she\'s hurting. It breaks my heart to read this thread. It does seem like the vet could go ahead and take the teeth out to give her relief. |
I\'m praying for Tatum.. poor baby girl. You must be just so worried sick.. <3 I hope her teeth stop hurting her soon and she\'s back to her normal self. |
Poor little Tatum! We will keep her in our prayers ... hope she feels better soon! |
Aw poor little baby! Tink sends her kisses. She remembers how her teeth hurt - but not as bad as Tatums!:( I hope she is able to eat soon. Did you try some melted or slushy popcicles? At least she\'d get a little sugar. I can just imagine how much your heart is hurting for your little girl. We\'ll send up a prayer for her.:hands: |
