| Luxating Patella My baby girl is almost two years old and her knees were really bad. She would ofter drag herself when they came out. It was so pitiful to see although she never cried with them. I got three opinions and all were in total agreement. The surgeon even told me that she would eventually be lame if we didn't do the surgery. I'm so glad we did ........she is so much happier. He wouldn't do both at the same time. He said there was a greater chance of her messing one of them up and that it was to hard on them. When he got in there he said that she had almost no grove at all for her knee caps to sit in. Since the surgeries she has ran and played.....climbed steps (which she never did before). The total surgery cost for both knees was around $1400.00. Alot......but well worth seeing our baby so happy. |

| Rosie had this same problem! Recently, she's been limping and yelping when she jumps up and down off of things, so I took her into the vet. The vet gave her some metacam drops. She's feeling much better, but the drops make her HYPER!!

| What exactly are the metacam drops supposed to do? Is it just to ease the pain? My Yorkie hasn't been limping anymore and he jumps up and down with no problems so I need to ask my vet if it is really necessary to have this surgery? |

| I have two 8 yr old sisters, one is 18 lbs and the other is 11 lbs....big girls, they are! My heavier one has a luxating patella on one leg....the vet said if she lost a couple of lbs, that would get rid of it. I can't get her to lose the wt...she's like me and likes to eat too much...hehe.....I have a knee that is bad too. Her and I have a lot of things alike! I am getting off track here.....she has had this bad knee for years. I give her 25 mg Rimydl daily.....she runs around very well....has adapted a different gait to make up for the malfunctioning leg. I couldn't afford the surgery.....she also has cataracts, which I couldn't afford to fix, either. But she has adapted to her lessoning sight, as well. It's too bad that surgery costs so much and they don't have blue cross lol |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Eros has Grade 4 So I took Eros to the vet on friday to inquire about his scratching on the back all the time and his infected ear...and this is what they said: 1. Eris is 9lbs...he's labeled as obese 2. He has a Grade 4 for his kneecaps. He must loose weight in order to not have surgery. 3. Staph infection 4. Yeast infection 5. Cyst on his little bum 6. He will need his periodontals cleaned... Crickey! The Grade 4 on the kneecaps really scared me though. I asked if it was from jumping from my bed, and the doc stated that he was probably born with this becuase he was not able to move them around when inspecting them. Anyways, he said that as long as I can get him down to 7 pounds and maintain that weight, there shouldn't be an issue with his knees...and to think, i was just going in there to check on this back and ears! |

| Libby has LP in her back legs and it is a grade 2. My vet said that if I keep her from becoming overweight, she should not get worse. As soon as I found out about the knees, I started giving her Flexicose, which is a liquid glucosamine complex. She has been doing great since then and isn't having any issues at all with her knees. I cannot get her to quit jumping, so have given up trying, but even with all her jumping and being wild and crazy, she hasn't shown any signs of them hurting. I also try to walk her to build up the muscles and ligaments around the knee. Good luck with your little one! I hope it's not beyond a grade 2!

| Hi, my 10 weeks old yorkie was discovered during a puppy wellness checkup that she has a 3/4 grade LP on one of her hind leg and a 2/3 on the other. The vet said we'd have to wait until she's at least 4mos. old to looking into surgery. How old was yours when LP was diagnosed? age and weight at time of surgery? cost? lenght of recovery? |

| My Yorkie was diagnosed with LP last year, when he was 2. I was told by an orthopedic surgeon that his LP is only a grade 1 so he doesn't need surgery. I pray his knees stay at a grade 1 because the surgery is expensive and recovery time is long.
