| Putting my Sophie to sleep My yorkie is an unspaded female. Long story on why she's not spaded. Mainly I was too scared to have her spaded because she was so s,mall. Anyway now she is 15.5 years old and has been having infections on a regular basis. We have been treating her with antibiotics and now they are not working. She is leaking this green sticky stuff. I know a dog this happened to and eventually her uterus burst and she was operated on and of course 3 months later died. I never wanted to put my yorkie through any pain and honestly I think she is in pain now. I am always washing her off but she licks herself at night and I dont think this is helping her. She is a very fussy eater lately and turns up her nose at everything. Mostly because I think she wants to eat but has lost her appetite. I dont want her to go through a burst uterus. She has been my baby for so long. Putting her to sleep is such a hard choice but I cant let her go through anymore pain. My vet ( He is new because the other vet sold his business) wants to spay her after this infection goes away howver I have to call him and tell him the medicine is not working anymore which my old vet told me eventually the antibiotics would stop working. Does anyone know of anything else that could be done? |

| Don't know what to tell you, it's a hard call. JMO--Quality of life has always been an important issue for me in determining the decision to let go! It's never an easy decision and only one YOU can make it. Is she suffering, is she happy, is she pain free, will meds only delay the eventual and not really change her quality of life; all questions that only you know the answers to. Wish you the best and sorry you have such a serious and sad situation to deal with.

| Another vet! Honey, before you put her to sleep try the opinon of another vet, at least, maybe two other vets! Maybe there is another antibotic they can use. Then when she is healthy enough she should be spayed. I am sending prayers to you and the little girl! Feel better soon little one!

| You are in my thoughts . JMO....I think 15 years old is a little too old to be spayed . I hope the vet will find a cure for her . If she was mine , I'd forget about the spay surgery , why put her in another stress . I'll pray for her and hope she'll be better . |

| Bless your heart. I have been thru that with a very beloved cocker. It was heart breaking for me but I vowed to him that I would NEVER let him be in pain. He was 14 and couldln't walk anymore. It took me months to get over it and I still think of him often but my son and DIL got me Murfee. He is the light of my life now. I know you will make the right decision. |

| I'm so very sorry. I would try to get a few more opinions from different doctors but in the end if they cannot improve the quality of life, then I'd have a tough decision to make. I wish you all the best of luck.

| I wish there were an easy answer, but only your heart can tell you what to do. If it were me, I would get another opinion and go from there. Put yourself in your baby's paws. Would you want to be in pain and suffer, knowing you won't get any better, just worse. It's easy for us to be selfish and try to keep our babies with us just because we love them so much, but it's because we love them so much that sometimes it's best to let them go. My heart goes out to you, it's such a sad situation to be in. Sending prayers for you both. God Bless.

| You know, I wouldn't spay her and seek the advice of another vet. She is too old and as someone said, quality of life is so very important. I had to make that difficult decision in January for my beloved Sophie who was 13. Do you know when I knew? She looked at me with pleading eyes as if to say "please help me, Momma". 15 years is a long time and I do understand your feelings. Think of a little old lady being put through surgery? I will hold you in my thoughts and watch for updates on your precious baby. Warmly, Deborah

| my sasha had a womb infection and my vet did not want to wait till the infection had gone to spay her as he said all the time we wait the pus goes in to her blood stream, so she was spayed with the infection which is harder to do but it was worth risking as a womb infection can and does kill a lot of dogs. as for the age of your little one yes there is a greater risk of her dieing while shes under but if you look at your other choices, 1 you have her pts or 2 you leave it untill she gets blood posioning and dies or you have to have her pts. its such a hard thing to do ive been there and my heart goes out to you. if i were you i would have her spayed now so at least i gave her a chance and if she comes through it and feels better and happy for a few more weeks months or even years i made the right choice but also if she dies while shes under or soon after i could look at my self and say well at least i gave her a chance so i still made the right choice but it was her time to go. sending hugs |
