HELP Mickey's Butt?? Is it his glands?? THis is my first time beign a mommy :) I'm still kind of young (24) but I need advice and I know you will all know here!! I heard that yorkies have glands that need to be cleaned in there butt?? Is this true?? If so how do you know when they need to be cleaned? I'm really confused. A few weeks ago mickey had a problem going to the bathroom and ever since his butt looks a bit different then the norm, for a while he was licking it but he hasn't as much. I did the hot compress on it to sooth him which helped alot, which I got that advice here. He is popping fine now but I am still worried. I don't get Mickey groomed I do it myself because he doesn't like people (I think he was abused as a puppy before I got him) and he would most likely bite them and I think its abuse to have them sit in a cage all day just my take on that. I can bring him to my vet and ask them to clean him I know he's due for a visit as he hasnt' gone since last July but I am very low on money so I want to make sure before I call them. So i wanted to ask you all here first! |
Well it sounds like your little Mickey may need to have his anal glands expressed. Its a simple and fast trip the the vet or groomer, and dont cost that much $. You could even get his vaxs done at the same time if needed..:) oh and this is something you dont want to do yourself. The smell if horrible and tends to linger for awhile.. |
Yep, you gotta get it done, Kamari is going next week to be groomed and I will get it done then. Kodak has gland problems where his glands have burst and can be painful. They are opting to do surgery to clean the glands out if the medicine they gave him doesn't work.:( |
My Bailey has always freaked out about her butt... ALWAYS! She is about a year and a half or so now. She turns and nibbles at her butt all the time. When I first got her, I thought it was because of worms and had her wormed and checked three times. I was told it could be her anal glands so I had them expressed at the vet. Still no improvement. Since you are all talking about that anyway... any ideas for me too?? Thanks! |
One of the more "suttle" signs is butt licking. A big sign? This nasty smell that comes from below. It doesn't smell like poop, but it's a fishy smell. Speaking of which, Baby needs to get hers done too b/c that fishy smell is back! |

Hmm...I noticed a slight fishy smell from Chloe a few days ago, but it's not there anymore. I've noticed that her anus isn't really swollen, but kinda just "puckers" (sorry lol) out a bit. She doesn't have trouble pooing or anything...do you think she needs it done? |
I'm glad I"m not the only one having this problem I'll call the vet next week when I get paid again thanks so much, I don't want my baby boy to be in pain lol |
I used to express my Toy Poodle's anal glands myself. It is very simple. If you go to the Vet or Groomers have them show you just incase you need to do it between appts. It's gross, or rather the smell is but it is much easier if you can do it as it causes your dog less stress. |

Uh oh, will be making an appt. with the groomer this week. She needs her nails done anyways... |
Is it normal for them to scoot around 2 days after they got their anal glands expressed? |
Scooting around 2 days after anals expressed I don't think it is normal for them to scoot around 2 days after they have had their anal glands expressed. Some groomers are too rough, in my opinion, and you have to be very careful with their tiny bottoms. I have also heard that the more the anals are artificially expressed, the more they have to be done-- |

It depends...if your baby got it done by a groomer, they express from the outside, only getting some liquid out. The vet, on the other hand, does it internally and squeezes everything out. Now, it also could be that your baby is scooting b/c his/her hiney hurts or they have poop on their hair. :p |
They are really to express !!!!! The anal glands are at 4:00 and 8:00 in relation to the anus. You just find them in that area, they are like a small grape when full and w/ your thumb and forefinger you have to squeeze toward the anus and at the same time pull away from the dog. The liquid will pop right out. You have to squeeze a little hard, sometimes they will pop........ I do Cuddles while I am bathing her, then you can wash them clean...... Very easy to do......BUT GROSS.......... ...WHY PAY THOUGH.........:D ????????????/ God Bless |

Can you come and do Baby's? :D |
my lab has this problem. She scoots her butt across the floor tho :) Before, after I have them expressed, doesn't matter. I think she's used to it and just does it for attention. Any attention is good for her. Our vet told me I could have them removed but the surgery is like $400.00. I'm hoping she'll 'grow' out of it. |

I think TJ expressed his last night in Lowes... I had him in the cart and when we got back into the car, my hubby said: Eww - I think one of them needs a bath, really bad! I was holding Roxy and she just had a bath on Saturday. Then I smelled TJ's butt     YUCK! It smelled fishy, I wiped his butt with a tissue and there was some brown liquid. GROSS!!!! He butt got washed as soon as we got home! Now I know what that smell is   Do you think he got it all out? I don't bring them to the groomers and I have never asked my Vet to do it. I just saw TJ trying to bit at his tail...hmmmmm |
I bring Conner to the groomer every 4 months or so. I'll have to ask him if he does it. |

No, he didn't get it all out. His hiney just leaked! Baby was "digging" at her butt with her mouth today too. I have to make a vet appt. asap! |
new yorkie mom I've only had big dogs before, so this is my first time with Yorkies. LOVE THEM! Question on how often should anal glands be expressed? |

BTW, welcome to YT! :D |
Thank you! I've learned a lot from this site already. Everyone is very nice. |
I have never had Bella done. She is 2. No poop problems no smells, nothing so if it isnt broke....Should I fix it??? |
I express all my pups glands and yes the smell is bad. I do this on a table outside so it sprays in the grass or in the tub. Apple Cidar removes the smell really well. Acutally if I need to do this between baths, I rinse their little butts and spray with ACV. They are ready to go. |
sooo much info that was helpful My daughter called me rather concerned about her Yorkie, Louie. He was exhibiting all of the symptoms of "anal gland" concerns. So I looked on line while she comforted her boy. I read some of the messages and found our answer! Boy nothing can prepare you for the stench from something so darn cute! but Louie is doing much better and she will talk to her vet later this week. great sharing of ideas on how to deal with our loved companions!:animal-pa |
I have always done my babies, I always do it in the bath tub before bath and I use rubber gloves the smell can take your breath away but its something that has to be done My husband is in Army and regardless what people think we dont get paid as much as people think.. so I find its easier on pocket to do grooming and everything myself every other grooming. My newest baby Nina hates baths she is almost 5 months old if I can get her to love it like my Hailey did I will be happy.. LOL Good luck Dionna |
I just actually got a yorkie and I was wondering what age they are supposed to start being groomed and having this anal thing done? And also how often they should have it done? |
Waaaaaaiiiiitt. BEFORE you start regularly and manually expressing glands - PLEASE know first that unless there is something wrong structurally -or- if you are feeding a food that is irritating for your dog -or- if your dog is continually having soft poos - your dog's glands *should* take care of themselves. If you start manually expressing - you could be damaging your dog's ability to perform this themselves. A dog's firm, normal poo should express the glands as the poo passes the area (if they need emptying, that is). If your dog's glands are filling abnormally and not emptying themselves - please consider what you're feeding. It is rare that there is something structurally wrong that actually *requires* lifetime, manual intervention. Rather, this is a natural process that the dog should be able to take care of without you even being aware. Also, some problems can be outgrown. Nancy1999's baby needed his glands expressed sometimes as a puppy, but he did outgrow this - so it could sometimes be related to the maturity of the system. Please though, don't force this procedure on your dog unless it's absolutely necessary and unless you've considered diet first. :) |
He would drag and bite at his butt |
