my lab has this problem. She scoots her butt across the floor tho :) Before, after I have them expressed, doesn't matter. I think she's used to it and just does it for attention. Any attention is good for her. Our vet told me I could have them removed but the surgery is like $400.00. I'm hoping she'll 'grow' out of it. |

I think TJ expressed his last night in Lowes... I had him in the cart and when we got back into the car, my hubby said: Eww - I think one of them needs a bath, really bad! I was holding Roxy and she just had a bath on Saturday. Then I smelled TJ's butt     YUCK! It smelled fishy, I wiped his butt with a tissue and there was some brown liquid. GROSS!!!! He butt got washed as soon as we got home! Now I know what that smell is   Do you think he got it all out? I don't bring them to the groomers and I have never asked my Vet to do it. I just saw TJ trying to bit at his tail...hmmmmm |
I bring Conner to the groomer every 4 months or so. I'll have to ask him if he does it. |

BTW, welcome to YT! :D |
Thank you! I've learned a lot from this site already. Everyone is very nice. |
I have never had Bella done. She is 2. No poop problems no smells, nothing so if it isnt broke....Should I fix it??? |
I express all my pups glands and yes the smell is bad. I do this on a table outside so it sprays in the grass or in the tub. Apple Cidar removes the smell really well. Acutally if I need to do this between baths, I rinse their little butts and spray with ACV. They are ready to go. |
sooo much info that was helpful My daughter called me rather concerned about her Yorkie, Louie. He was exhibiting all of the symptoms of "anal gland" concerns. So I looked on line while she comforted her boy. I read some of the messages and found our answer! Boy nothing can prepare you for the stench from something so darn cute! but Louie is doing much better and she will talk to her vet later this week. great sharing of ideas on how to deal with our loved companions!:animal-pa |
I have always done my babies, I always do it in the bath tub before bath and I use rubber gloves the smell can take your breath away but its something that has to be done My husband is in Army and regardless what people think we dont get paid as much as people think.. so I find its easier on pocket to do grooming and everything myself every other grooming. My newest baby Nina hates baths she is almost 5 months old if I can get her to love it like my Hailey did I will be happy.. LOL Good luck Dionna |
I just actually got a yorkie and I was wondering what age they are supposed to start being groomed and having this anal thing done? And also how often they should have it done? |
Waaaaaaiiiiitt. BEFORE you start regularly and manually expressing glands - PLEASE know first that unless there is something wrong structurally -or- if you are feeding a food that is irritating for your dog -or- if your dog is continually having soft poos - your dog's glands *should* take care of themselves. If you start manually expressing - you could be damaging your dog's ability to perform this themselves. A dog's firm, normal poo should express the glands as the poo passes the area (if they need emptying, that is). If your dog's glands are filling abnormally and not emptying themselves - please consider what you're feeding. It is rare that there is something structurally wrong that actually *requires* lifetime, manual intervention. Rather, this is a natural process that the dog should be able to take care of without you even being aware. Also, some problems can be outgrown. Nancy1999's baby needed his glands expressed sometimes as a puppy, but he did outgrow this - so it could sometimes be related to the maturity of the system. Please though, don't force this procedure on your dog unless it's absolutely necessary and unless you've considered diet first. :) |
He would drag and bite at his butt |
