Urinating in crate/on self (AT WITS END!) Help! Hulk started to do something "new" a couple weeks ago, and we've tried everything, but nothing's worked! He's started to urinate in his crate (he's in the crate during the day, while we're gone, and at night), and when we wake up, or get home, he's covered in his own urine. At first we thought it was a UTI, but we took him to the vet, they ran the tests, and that's not it. We've tried being super regular with his potty schedule (when we wake up, before we leave, when we get home, and right before bed), and that didn't help. The only other thing we can think of, is that we're in the process of moving, and the house is in complete disarray (boxes all over the place, stuff not where it used to be, his favorite sniffing spots are covered by loads of boxes), but are not sure that'd drive him to pee himself. Has anyone ever dealt with this before? All my searching (google, here, etc) says, "check your dog for a UTI", but Hulk doesn't have one...so we're at wit's end! PLEASE HELP!!!! Matthew |
How old is he ? |
1 year 2 months He's just over a year (Born 12/10/05) |
hours How many hours you leave him in the crate? If you leave him in the crate for long hours then he doesn't have any place to go besides his crate. Couple hours might be OK 2 to 3 hours maybe, but if he is there more than 5+ hours then that's too long. I don't leave my puppy in th crate for more that 3 hours. You may want to leave him in another place in your house while you get organized. |

just wondering why at his age do you leave him in a crate????? |
Let me tell you what Boo does. When we have to put him in a crate, doesnt matter how long, even 20 min, he will pee in the crate. Doesnt matter if we just took him out and peed. I think that he is just pissed and getting us back for leaving. What ever he pees on in the crate he pushes to the back and lays up front. An the crate is small. |
Hulk is typically crated 8 hours during the day, and then from 12a-6a at night. The main reason we're crating him is that he's still having difficultly with potty training. We switched from pad (where he had gotten to about 95%) to outside, as we just bought a house (from an apartment), and think it would be best for him to be outside trained. So, there's still some retraining going on there. We're still crating him so he doesn't get into things he shouldn't be getting into while we're away or asleep. If anyone has any suggestions as to how we could better do this, please let us know! |

Crate training doesn't work for all dogs. It certainly did not work for mine. I have mine babygated in the laundry room during the day and at night so he always has access to a pee pad, food, and water, and is able to play when he wants. He's doing much better with outside training now that we don't crate him. Good luck! |
crating 8 hrs a day is very much cruel..... my opinion.... cant you get an xpen or at least leave the puppy in a hall way or kitchen or bedroom with door open..... that is too much time in a crate..... not fair |

Not trying to chastize you tarpy - just trying to help you see. Everyone has their opinion on what is right though. |
Quick question. What is a x pen? Picture. Where to look at one? |
Welcome to YT! I agree with the rest of the group, 8 hours is way too long. I learned that hard lesson when I first got Izzy. I left him home for 8 hours. I was going home during lunch to check on him but this particular day I got held up at work and couldnt go home.:( and when I got home it was an absolute mess! He peed and pooped, I had to give him a bath right away. He smelled so bad I couldnt hug him!:( I felt so bad!! After that, I ordered an ex pen. While I waited for it to be delivered, I left him in my room with his food crate, toys and peep pad. It worked out great! I was thinking man, I dont need the ex pen! ...but I still use it when Im home. So my point is:p ....Get an ex pen or try to block of a room or area where he can run around and have access to pee. Hope it works out, I know how frustrating it can be! |
An ex pen is best thing invented for dogs.... Quote:
