Tarpy- My twelve pounder can hold it all day while I'm at work, it's about 9 hours. But boy does he run to go out when I get home. He's not crated, he holds it on his own. I come home for lunch almost all of the time, but I miss it every now and then. He's two, and it took him until he was about a year and a half. My 4.5 pounder can hold it, he just doesn't. training For the health of a toy dogs bladder and kidney's, they should not be made to go longer then 4 hrs without peeing during the day. They need to drink and when they drink they need to pee...I sure would hate for someone to tell me I could pee every 8 hrs.. Get a pen big enough for a pee area... |
Hi, He just started holding it on his own. I used to lock him in the bathroom with potty pads at our old house, we had hardwood floors and didn't want him to ruin them. But now we just leave him loose and he just holds it on his own. I come home almost every day for lunch, so he's usually just holding it for four hours. But every now and then I have to work through lunch or run errands and he holds it just fine. Try penning him up with potty pads and a bed. Use an X-Pen, or a bathroom, or laundry room. Maybe put his crate with a bed in an x-pen and line the rest with potty pads. Whitney |
Mine is 8 months old. I have a baby gate in my kitchen doorway, and a pee pad in the kitchen. She goes on the pads. The Target in my city had the gates on clearance last week. Mine looks like jail bars, cause Venus will climb (climbed an x-pen in 2 days flat). She walked right through it. I got some plexyglas at Lowes today, they cut it to the width I wanted. I drilled holes in it, and fastened it to the gate tonight. Works great, and she can't walk through. I'm not wild about potty pads, but at least she has a "designated area" for times I'm not home. And the kitchen is the largest room, that doesn't have carpet. I feel the bathroom is way too small for her, but that's just my opinion. When I'm home, she'll go outside and potty with my 6 year old yorkie. I let them out together. I am retired, so its different for most of you than it is for me. I just won't crate over 4 hours, unless she's beside the bed I'm sleeping in. Least that way she can wake me to go. I think many cases are differnt though, and many require differnt things. I know if they kept peeing in the crate, I'd quit crating, and find another method. |
Is there any way you or a family member could let him have a pee break during the day...8 hours may ALWAYS be too long for him..he may never be able to hold it that long..so there might not be an answer to that. Like someone said here earlier..I cant hold it for 8 hours so I cant expect my 4 pound yorkie to do something I cant. I hope the x-pen or spare room works for you..all that time in a crate during the day and night is just sooooo long for him..can you imagine how it must feel to be in one tiny room for 8 hours and then again for 6 hours...I think you will BOTH be happier when you get him into the bathroom..its a tough situation...good luck!! 8 hours is a long time for a dog with a little bladder to hold it. I have three puppies ages 9 months, 7 months and 3 months. The 9 and 7 month old can hold it a lot longer than they used to.. but I still take them out about every 2 hours.. I think that's only fair. My littlest goes out every 1/2 hour if she's running around and playing. At night I usually have to take her out once around 3 or 4 am or she'll jump out of bed and pee. I use an XPEN for all 3 when I'm not home which is a rarity. I can fit TWO dog beds, food, water, and toys and they still have plenty of space to lounge and to play. Emma and Lula can jump out if they really want to, but usually don't if they're home alone. Just a note.. I used to leave them in the kitchen w/a baby gate and stopped because they were eating all the woodwork... if your pup has any chewing tendancies I wouldn't leave them w/access to the molding... just my opinion.
