Urinating in crate/on self (AT WITS END!) Help! Hulk started to do something "new" a couple weeks ago, and we've tried everything, but nothing's worked! He's started to urinate in his crate (he's in the crate during the day, while we're gone, and at night), and when we wake up, or get home, he's covered in his own urine. At first we thought it was a UTI, but we took him to the vet, they ran the tests, and that's not it. We've tried being super regular with his potty schedule (when we wake up, before we leave, when we get home, and right before bed), and that didn't help. The only other thing we can think of, is that we're in the process of moving, and the house is in complete disarray (boxes all over the place, stuff not where it used to be, his favorite sniffing spots are covered by loads of boxes), but are not sure that'd drive him to pee himself. Has anyone ever dealt with this before? All my searching (google, here, etc) says, "check your dog for a UTI", but Hulk doesn't have one...so we're at wit's end! PLEASE HELP!!!! Matthew |
How old is he ? |
1 year 2 months He's just over a year (Born 12/10/05) |
hours How many hours you leave him in the crate? If you leave him in the crate for long hours then he doesn't have any place to go besides his crate. Couple hours might be OK 2 to 3 hours maybe, but if he is there more than 5+ hours then that's too long. I don't leave my puppy in th crate for more that 3 hours. You may want to leave him in another place in your house while you get organized. |

just wondering why at his age do you leave him in a crate????? |
Let me tell you what Boo does. When we have to put him in a crate, doesnt matter how long, even 20 min, he will pee in the crate. Doesnt matter if we just took him out and peed. I think that he is just pissed and getting us back for leaving. What ever he pees on in the crate he pushes to the back and lays up front. An the crate is small. |
Hulk is typically crated 8 hours during the day, and then from 12a-6a at night. The main reason we're crating him is that he's still having difficultly with potty training. We switched from pad (where he had gotten to about 95%) to outside, as we just bought a house (from an apartment), and think it would be best for him to be outside trained. So, there's still some retraining going on there. We're still crating him so he doesn't get into things he shouldn't be getting into while we're away or asleep. If anyone has any suggestions as to how we could better do this, please let us know! |

Crate training doesn't work for all dogs. It certainly did not work for mine. I have mine babygated in the laundry room during the day and at night so he always has access to a pee pad, food, and water, and is able to play when he wants. He's doing much better with outside training now that we don't crate him. Good luck! |
crating 8 hrs a day is very much cruel..... my opinion.... cant you get an xpen or at least leave the puppy in a hall way or kitchen or bedroom with door open..... that is too much time in a crate..... not fair |

Not trying to chastize you tarpy - just trying to help you see. Everyone has their opinion on what is right though. |
Quick question. What is a x pen? Picture. Where to look at one? |
Welcome to YT! I agree with the rest of the group, 8 hours is way too long. I learned that hard lesson when I first got Izzy. I left him home for 8 hours. I was going home during lunch to check on him but this particular day I got held up at work and couldnt go home.:( and when I got home it was an absolute mess! He peed and pooped, I had to give him a bath right away. He smelled so bad I couldnt hug him!:( I felt so bad!! After that, I ordered an ex pen. While I waited for it to be delivered, I left him in my room with his food crate, toys and peep pad. It worked out great! I was thinking man, I dont need the ex pen! ...but I still use it when Im home. So my point is:p ....Get an ex pen or try to block of a room or area where he can run around and have access to pee. Hope it works out, I know how frustrating it can be! |
An ex pen is best thing invented for dogs.... Quote:
http://www.digitpet.com/product_grou...FQ8TSQodYk6OQg They are pretty pricey in the pet stores but I managed to get one for a decent price...31.99 for the 24" size. |

I guess fundamentally the question is, will he ever be able to hold it 8 hours at a time? Other dogs I've had/grown up with, have been able to, but Hulk is the smallest dog we've had so far (he's 12lbs, so a big yorkie, and yes, we do have AKC papers :) ) |
the kitchen sounds pretty good.. good luck... he will be more a happy boy... |
Tarpy- My twelve pounder can hold it all day while I'm at work, it's about 9 hours. But boy does he run to go out when I get home. He's not crated, he holds it on his own. I come home for lunch almost all of the time, but I miss it every now and then. He's two, and it took him until he was about a year and a half. My 4.5 pounder can hold it, he just doesn't. There's hope for him! Whitney |

All help is greatly appreciated! |
training For the health of a toy dogs bladder and kidney's, they should not be made to go longer then 4 hrs without peeing during the day. They need to drink and when they drink they need to pee...I sure would hate for someone to tell me I could pee every 8 hrs.. Get a pen big enough for a pee area... |
Hi, He just started holding it on his own. I used to lock him in the bathroom with potty pads at our old house, we had hardwood floors and didn't want him to ruin them. But now we just leave him loose and he just holds it on his own. I come home almost every day for lunch, so he's usually just holding it for four hours. But every now and then I have to work through lunch or run errands and he holds it just fine. Try penning him up with potty pads and a bed. Use an X-Pen, or a bathroom, or laundry room. Maybe put his crate with a bed in an x-pen and line the rest with potty pads. Whitney |
Mine is 8 months old. I have a baby gate in my kitchen doorway, and a pee pad in the kitchen. She goes on the pads. The Target in my city had the gates on clearance last week. Mine looks like jail bars, cause Venus will climb (climbed an x-pen in 2 days flat). She walked right through it. I got some plexyglas at Lowes today, they cut it to the width I wanted. I drilled holes in it, and fastened it to the gate tonight. Works great, and she can't walk through. I'm not wild about potty pads, but at least she has a "designated area" for times I'm not home. And the kitchen is the largest room, that doesn't have carpet. I feel the bathroom is way too small for her, but that's just my opinion. When I'm home, she'll go outside and potty with my 6 year old yorkie. I let them out together. I am retired, so its different for most of you than it is for me. I just won't crate over 4 hours, unless she's beside the bed I'm sleeping in. Least that way she can wake me to go. I think many cases are differnt though, and many require differnt things. I know if they kept peeing in the crate, I'd quit crating, and find another method. |
Is there any way you or a family member could let him have a pee break during the day...8 hours may ALWAYS be too long for him..he may never be able to hold it that long..so there might not be an answer to that. Like someone said here earlier..I cant hold it for 8 hours so I cant expect my 4 pound yorkie to do something I cant. I hope the x-pen or spare room works for you..all that time in a crate during the day and night is just sooooo long for him..can you imagine how it must feel to be in one tiny room for 8 hours and then again for 6 hours...I think you will BOTH be happier when you get him into the bathroom..its a tough situation...good luck!! Welcome to YT!! Dawn |

8 hours is a long time for a dog with a little bladder to hold it. I have three puppies ages 9 months, 7 months and 3 months. The 9 and 7 month old can hold it a lot longer than they used to.. but I still take them out about every 2 hours.. I think that's only fair. My littlest goes out every 1/2 hour if she's running around and playing. At night I usually have to take her out once around 3 or 4 am or she'll jump out of bed and pee. I use an XPEN for all 3 when I'm not home which is a rarity. I can fit TWO dog beds, food, water, and toys and they still have plenty of space to lounge and to play. Emma and Lula can jump out if they really want to, but usually don't if they're home alone. Just a note.. I used to leave them in the kitchen w/a baby gate and stopped because they were eating all the woodwork... if your pup has any chewing tendancies I wouldn't leave them w/access to the molding... just my opinion. Good luck! |
