I read this post from the beginning and my heart is out for Ralphie.... HUGS AND PRAYERS!!! Keep up the good work and think of positive thoughts for the end of the month! |
Still doing great! But read attached.. Ralphie is now at 4.6! He is really doing well. The only thought I have is the metrodozile he is on for 6-8 weeks may have some side affects that could be a problem.. This is for anyone who needs to think about this medicine long term.. Side Effects ? Most common: clinical signs related to the bad taste, or GI upset. ? Dogs and cats: excessive salivation, gagging, regurgitation, pawing at the mouth, nausea, vomiting, and decreased appetite are the most frequent complaints. Less common or rare side effects include diarrhea, depression, lethargy, weakness, low white blood cell count, liver failure, and blood in the urine, or dark urine due to pigment changes. Neurologic signs may be seen after accidental overdose or, more commonly, with long-term moderate to high-dose therapy as in the treatment of difficult bacterial infections. Signs often begin 7 to 12 days following the start of treatment. Precautions ? Metronidazole causes birth defects in laboratory animals. It should be avoided in pregnant animals, especially in the first trimester. Some metronidazole is excreted in breast milk, and it should not be used in lactating animals. ? Metronidazole should not be used in young puppies and kittens. ? Metronidazole should be avoided or used with caution, at reduced doses, in animals with kidney or liver disease. Drug Interactions ? Metronidazole is reported to elevate prothrombin time in animals on warfarin or other coumarin anticoagulants. ? Cimetidine can interfere with the liver's ability to break down metronidazole and the dose may have to be reduced. ? Phenobarbital and phenytoin may increase the metabolism of metronidazole. Overdose ? Dogs and cats: Symptoms of overdose of metronidazole include the gastrointestinal signs (anorexia, vomiting) and neurologic signs including depression, ataxia, disorientation, head-tilt, tremors, bradycardia, rigidity, stiffness, and seizures. Neurologic signs may occur due to acute overdose although they are more commonly seen in animals that are on long-term moderate or high doses (oral doses greater than 66 mg/kg/day). Signs of chronic toxicity often begin 7-12 days following the start of treatment. After the drug is discontinued, it may be several days to two weeks before these neurologic signs begin to diminish. |
How is Ralphie doing? :) |
He seems to be doing ok..I get a little nervous if I hear his stomach start to growl, because thats when I know he is going to have a stomach ache and diareah...so far so good though.. |
I just finished reading from start to finish. I'm so sorry Ralphie is so sick, but it sounds like you're doing better one day at a time. I hope your baby continues to improve and I'll continue to pray for his recovery.:) |
Poor Ralphie baby, Best wishes to your road of recovery. Sending kisses........ |
azkaty, I so feel for both Ralphie and you! I think if I had read your post though before we went through our recent bout of HGE, I would have freaked, but really appreciate the information. Ozzie just stopped a 10-day regimen of metrinadazole yesterday ... I hope Ralphie continues to be well and that the medicine causes him no ill effects. We're waiting for Ozzie's BMs to right themselves after 10 days of meds (Metronidazole, generic Pepcid, and REglan) so far it's about every other day. Still soft, but no blood and otherwise normal looking. You just hold your breath with these conditions, don't you?;) |
sending good wishes and thoughts your way for Ralphie .... |
Thank you fir all your kind thoughts and prayers ! I thought we were in trouble last nite, when Ralphie get over to Ashleys food bowl before I could get to it.. she is a finiky 55 lb golden, an always leaves food in her dish..I got distracted, and left the gate open..and there was the little beast running away from her empty plate ! I thought OMG ! How much did he get!!! I think I was lucky though.. because this morning, he is ok ( so far) no diareah..so maybe he only got a piece.. I have them eating the same food because the RX food is so expensive and it would take him a year to go thru a 10 lb bag..I was just worried he ate her dinner ! Anyway, I would love to get him off the medicine, as I am worried about long term results.. |
So glad that Ralphie is doing better:aimeeyork |
