Oh, help help help! Before we end up having to go to the er can anyone give me any suggestions as to how to get my new mama to eat? The babies are 3 days old and mama has eaten less and less. |
I have tried tempting her with every thing seh would have gobbled up before. Bologna, hotdogs hamburger canned dog food |
No, you should take her in and make sure she isn't running a fever and so on. Pyometriosis isn't any fun and can take a bitch down in just hours. (there are symptoms, but it varies so greatly that it isn't worth chancing these *signs*) |
She definitely needs to see the vet, but if you're in a pinch, try some rice cooked with chicken broth (or use boullion cube melted in water). Or, some boiled chicken. Make sure she gets LOTS of water too as those pups are really taking the fluids out of her. Hope all turns out well. |
Yes, Take her to the vet. I gave Molly goat's milk she loved it when nothing else would work. Good Luck to you! |
You should take her to the vet . |
I hope your Mama is better today! Keep us posted, please? |
How are mama and the pups doing today? |
i hope everything is ok...pls let us know |
I too had to give mine goats milk because she wasnt eating and nutrical 2 times a day. You can get also try rebound, its good. |
If it is an infection, she can be dead quicker than you think. She really needs a Vet to check her out. |
We did take her to the vet. We eked her along until this morning, no vets want to work over the holiday. Our vet thinks she has a bit of pancreatitis. He doesn't feel it's too serious at this point because she's not vomiting. He gave her a shot of antibiotics and sent some home with us. He gave her an injection of glucose and some special dog food to mix with a kind of doggie pedialyte and said to force feed her. He said if she gets worse she will have to be hospitalized so you know I'm working hard on her. The babies are doing great. I am trying to supplement them on puppy formula so they aren't such a drain on mama, but they sure don't like it. LOL Was the goat's milk fresh or canned? Sylvia |
One of the main symptoms of Pancreatitis is vomiting, so if she isn't, I kind of doubt that she has that. I sure hope that she'll be okay, but you may want to get a second opinion. If she has a uterine infection it can kill her rather quickly and I'd hate to see that happen to you guys:( It\'s good that he gave her a shot of antibiotics, but it may not be enough, and antibiotics do not "cure" pancreatitis anyway:confused: If it were my dog, I\'d be seeking out a new vet. JMHO. I know you must be exhausted, hopefully you\'ll be able to get some rest here and there. Take good care of YOU too! |
You should never feed bologna..very high in sodium and preservatives like many human foods that can cause pancreatitus. |
It is a very stressful situation. However, trying to get her to eat a huge variance of human food is not good for her at all. She will become sick and you won\'t know if it is from the mixture of food she isn\'t used to or if it is the original cause for not eating to begin with. Being that she has just had pups I\'d definetly take her to another vet. She needs to be checked over thoroughly. Are you sure she passed all placentas? A retained one can cause problems for sure. Do you think the vet checked her over thoroughly...looking and pressing in all the right areas? Is she urinating frequently? Is she drinking water? Did he check her temp? I pray all is well with her and that she has a full recovery. Please post another update soon so we will know how she is feeling and what her current symptoms are. |
LOL Sylvan, I wished I knew this sooner. Maybe that\'s why he thinks she\'s got Pancreatitis, that\'s all she would eat. Maybe it was starting something. I will call another vet and see if I can get in. Vets are like drs and all have different experiences so maybe another will know what\'s going on. I don\'t think she has a uterine infection he ran a blood panel and did a fecal test and yes, he pushed and proded her all over the place. Yes, she\'s urinating ok and reasonably often for the shape she\'s in. She\'s still not eating but I am force feeding her with the syringe. She does drink water but I think the babies are hungry even tho they are nursing. I don\'t think she\'s got much milk left. She is not listless or as weak as you might expect. I have the babies in a shallow tote and she hops in and out without a problem. Everyone: do you think I should take the babies away from her and just feed them formula? Do you think it would help or would it distress her too much? She doesn\'t mind me messing around with them. I haven\'t even docked their tails or done their dewclaws to keep from distressing her more. |
There\'s a breeders board a little ways down here, you should ask your last question there for more responses. They\'re awesome here, and should be able to help you. Prayers continuing for your Mama doggie and her babes:love: |
Just wanted to see how momma and babies are doing today. Is momma eating yet? Please keep us posted. My little Willow says that sometimes she likes baby chicken food put on her food and that gets her appetite going. Sometimes we give her nutri-cal so she doesn\'t get hypoglycemic. Good luck. |
Lady is not doing very well at all. Amber had her babies today and took Lady\'s babies with no problem. Lady went to the vet and the vet said he\'s never seen this happen. Her belly was concave and now bloated. He drew some fluid and says it looks pussy. He thinks she has a rupture of her colon or her uterus. She is going in for an operation tomorrow. I don\'t know if he will have to remove her uterus or not. I wasn\'t able to go, I was delivering puppies. My husband took her in so there are questions still to be asked. He drew some blood and they said her temp was 103. I am still forcing food, water and medicine. I don\'t care if they take out her uterus but I\'m so worried about her. |
OMG I hope all works out I will keep her in my prayers. Please keep us updated when you can looks like you are very busy. |
Oh, I am so sorry Lady is not doing well and has to have surgery. You do have your hands full right now. Keep us posted. My prayers are with you and your family. |
Thank you, I appreciate your prayers. I have seen what internet prayers can do. Sylvia |
I know I am repeating some of what I already said but I am trying to make sure I gave all the information. LOL Lady went back to the vet today. Yesterday her abdomen started to swell. The vet doesn\'t know what this is but suspects she might have a ruptured colon or uterus. He drew some fluid from her abdomen and said it looked pussy. He sent her home so I could take care of her tonight. They don\'t have anyone staying over night. Tomorrow she goes in for an operation to see if he can find out what is causing the problems. I am still forcing her to eat and take the medicine but she drinks water on her own. Amber had babies today, a girl and 2 boys. I took Lady\'s boys and put them in with Amber\'s babies, she accepted them readily. They lost weight back to their birth weights and so are only an ounce bigger than Amber\'s babies. Lady\'s babies are 8 days old and even tho they have lost weight rather than gaining they are healthy and strong. They are so strong I am concerned about the new borns getting their milk so I will be watching their weights carefully. The vet suggested I put them with Amber\'s babies before he knew I did it, he tried to express milk from each of Lady\'s breasts and got none. Sylvia |

Sorry, I don\'t know what happened. Could a moderator remove the last 3 messages from me? Including this one? Thanks, Sylvia |
OMG, how is she doing? What surgery did they have to perform? I pray she is going to be ok. Please let us know. My thoughts and prayers are with you. |
Oh my gosh:eek: :( I hope that Lady will be okay, thank goodness her pups have their foster Mom. You must be a wreck:cry: Prayers going up for all of you! |
Ok, we have been busy today but Lady is home. They did laser surgery and had to remove her uterus. She had a rupture down near her vagina. She seems to be in pain, she doesn\'t move much. They said to keep giving her the antibiotics for the full 14 days and if it isn\'t enough they will get her some more. They said to give her food and water but that she probably won\'t eat tonight and if she doesn\'t eat tomorrow to call them. |
I wish Lady a speedy recovery:love: You\'re a good Mommy, you got her to the doctor and saved her life! Keep us posted when you can, whew, you\'ve been busy:eek:! |
