Yorkie jumped off couch - can't use left front paw. This is really unbeleivable - my parents had been looking around for a good breeder for almost a year now, and just got the puppy home today - 5 months old. We haven't even figured out a name for him yet... Was sitting on the couch with my parents and hopped off and started yelping - this little jump of his couldn't have been more than a foot. Now he he's favouring his right paw, keeping his left suspended and limp... I haven't seen my parents this distraught in my whole life.... They've just left for the 24hour animal hospital. Any insight as to what happened, or wether or not this is normal for yorkies etc. Any information really would be appreciated. |
poor baby.. this seems to be a common injury. my vet told me to be careful because my little guy has no fear and will jump off anything. plus. xrays are very expensive. |
May be just a bruse I hope so. And welcome to YT. I hope the lil guy is ok keep us posted. |
Thanks for the kind thoughts, I'm terribly anxious to find out what happend here... My aunt and uncle have a yorkie and he's jumped right out of my arms before without problems. Always bouncing around from couches and beds, I was just dumbfounded that this lil guy managed to hurt himself with a 1' drop into soft carpet. |
Kodak did the same thing around 6 mos old and sprained his hip, they thought is was dislocated. I was so upset, so I called the 24 hour emergency number. They told me to wait it out and bring him in the next day. He was hopping around on 3 legs and couldn't sit. I called another place and they saw him that night, it was sprained and they gave him pain killers. He's been hopping and jumping and leaping ever since!:) Here's hoping the little one will be ok, and nothing serious. |
Just got a call from my parents - both bones are broken. I just can't beleive it... seriously - no more than a foot. I'll be worried sick every time I see the lil guy get up any higher than he can stand. |
Wow, sorry to hear that, keep a close eye on him from now on, poor little fellow. |
Well they've just come home now, he's got his leg in a cast - has to go in tomorrow to get a pin and a plate put in. We're already $500 in the hole for the x-rays.... Is this at all normal?? I mean he could climb on on the couch, he's just as tall as the seat cushions. Should we always be worried to have him climb on the couch? |
WOW..Poor little guy. These little ones have no fear. They will jump off anything, and out of your arms. I hope his leg heals ok and he has a speedy recovery. |
He must have broken it bad if they are going to have to put a plate and pin in. Sorry, I have never had anything like that to happen so I don't know if it is normal or not ..but 500 for x-rays seem really high. My sisters pup broke its leg once and they put it in a case.. only charge her 65.00. |
WOW...maybe he just landed funny...like when we step off a curb and bust a knee..it happens. mine jump off everything..with in reason. I have a pregnant female that keeps jumping on and off my high bed...she won't be able to jump up in a few more days luckily. I hope the little guy heals quickly. Kristie |
I am so sorry to hear about your little guy! That happened to us with a Pomerainen we had rescued, we had only had him a few days and my daughter was taking him out to go potty and he jumped out of her arms and broke his front leg.....oh the crying from both my daughter and the dog... The price for xrays you are paying is high but an after hours clinic charges more. I would also invest in some steps for the dog to get up and down on the couch or bed. |
You can also request your Xrays if you have a regular vet for a second opinion. If surgery has to be done consider, getting him microchipped and neutered at the same time so he doesn't have to go under again. (just a thought) Best Wishes, Michele & Bailey:aimeeyork |
Well my parents are off to see a different vet right now. I saw the x-rays - it's a very clean break, but both bones are broken. Maybe this vet will be able to set them properly. I think the puppy is doing the best out of all of our family - nobody slept well last night, my mom actually passed out while at the 24hour animal hospital last night. But upon my waking up this morning the 'lil guy is hobbling about excited to see me, licking at my hand. Thanks again for all your kind thoughts. |
POOR Baby !! :( :( I hope the surgery goes well - it sounds like he must have really landed hard but it doesn't take much for these little guys to hurt themselves - you can use a stroller for him to keep him still while he's healing - and then when his leg starts getting better and he's moving around - STEPS to the places he likes jumping from ... all the best to you - I hope your mom's ok also - I'd have freaked out too ....GOOD LUCK ! |
OMG:eek: I am so sorry the lil guy broke his leg. I hope the new vet can help. Bless his lil sweet heart I feel for him I have broke a few bones in my life and it Hurts!:( thank you for keeping us updated. |
I feel so bad for the puppy but i think i feel worse for you guys it seems to be hitting the adults harder than it is the puppy. You guys hang in there he will be alright.;) |
I know how traumatic it is to have a little one hurt like that. Hang in there! Like little kids who are sometimes prone to accidents, they bounce back. Good luck! |
i have three sets of steps, landing pads because he won't go down the steps... and i try to pick my duke up and down from stuff because no matter what, he seems to have a mind of his own. i guess there is only so much we can do to protect them. sorry about the pup's break, hopefully he will have a full recovery soon. duke had to have surgery for his left hip when he was a pup and has always limped when jogging, but that's just his thing. glad he was licking you again. :) |
just wondering how the lil pup is today? |
He should be fine, Royce fell twice from my arms i was sitting on my desk chair and thank god he was ok and once i was standing and he jumped from my arms i called emergency asap and they told me since he is eating and drinking and playing and alert dont bring him just keep an eye on him for 24 hrs needles to say the following day took him to the vet to make sure that everything is ok ....if he is not crying you just have to massage the paw and things will be back to normal but good thing u took him to the vet . |
Just to let everybody know Fletcher (we finally decided on a name) had a pin put in his leg today, he's out of recovery and back home. He's pretty stressed, he had diarrhea last night and wouldn't stop whimpering. He seems to have calmed down a bit now, but is still whimpering, he's eaten, gone to the washroom (if you will) and walked about as much as he's really able to at this point.... Maybe tomorrow will be a better day Thanks again for all your kind thoughts. |
Good thing you took him to the vet. Hope he gets well soon, keep us posted. |
So glad Fletcher is doing okay. So I guess the second vet said the same as the first then? BTW LOVE the name:) |
Aww i'm so sorry you have to go through this these babies are fearless my Peeka jumps from my bed which is about 3 1/2 feet and he thinks he's a cat he jumps my 3 foot baby gate with ease. i'm glad you got him all fixed up all you can do is comfort him now and make sure you keep up on his pain meds good luck and keep us posted |
Poor little Fletcher!:( I agree with Villette and WRScorpio, get some steps for him. Yorkies have no fear and will jump no matter how high. We have steps for our bed and big pillows (that my boys lay on) that act as a ramp for the sofa. We really have to be careful of the little ones jumping on and off furniture. I know a woman whose maltese jumped off of a sofa and broke her neck. This maltese had been jumping for years and just one time landed awkwardly and broke her neck. The dog had to be put down because she was paralyzed. It was a horrible tragedy. Get well wishes for Fletcher (love the name!) and welcome to YT. :) :getwellso :nursing: |
Yep time for pet stairs. So glad Fletcher will be ok. I know when something happens to our babies, it can sure scare the mess out of us. When Venus started jumping off the sofa, at about 4 months or so, scared me to death. She'd do a drop and roll. Thank God I have carpet and really good padding underneath. I knew with her, as little as she was, I needed pet stairs for the bed. She loves them too! She's never jumped off the bed. But with Adonis I had to teach him how to use them by putting food on each step then the top of my bed. He will use them going up, but still (after 2 months) will jump off the bed. He's 5 years old. So glad Fletcher will be ok. If you need to keep him still, crate him. Thats how I kept Venus still last night after her spay. |
Sorry to hear that. My little Bella jumped off of the couch the day after we got her also. She fractured all of her little toes on that foot! The vet said it is very common for these little dogs to fracture or break their legs. I hope the little guys heals nicely. |
I have often wondered if carpet makes the difference. More room for error in bad landings. I have wondered if I had tile or wood floors around my couches what might happen to Lucy when she jumps on the floor from the couches. |
Our little girl, Lacy, jumped off the bed onto a carpeted floor three weeks ago and also broke the ulna and radius. She has 4 pins! Emergency vet charged us $326 for x-rays and splint. Our vet charged $1010 for surgery. He checks her every week and changes the bandage. She came in from "doing her business" last week and was obviously in extreme pain. She stayed at the vets fro 2 nights and he could find nothing wrong. She is home again and seems to be doing quite well. Vet encourages us to try to keep her as quiet as possible. Says she will have pins for at least 8 weeks and if x-rays are okay they will then take 2 of them out and see how she does for another week or two. Hope your little one recovers with no problems. |
