Puppy broken leg? I don't know what to do..... I was outside with the puppy and my other dogs when one of my kids screamed in the house. I ran in the house to see what the matter was and I accidently shut the door on the puppy. She is 11 1/2 wks old. She yelped really loud and when I picked her up to see she bit me. She's not putting any pressure on the leg at all. She is walking when I call her to me but she's holding her leg up and against her body. I tried my vet but he won't be home until 9. What should I do? Is this something that can wait or do I need to start calling the vets in the phone book? The nearest emergency vet hospital is more than 2 hrs from me. Please give me some advise. Also she already has a vet appointment tomorrow for a check up to make sure there's nothing wrong with her since she's been crying so much since I got her. |
At this point, I think I would wait for your vet to call you and see what he says. Poor baby and poor you!!! I hope everything turns out okay. Please let us know. |
I'm sitting here crying..... I still have another hour before I can get ahold of the vet. I'm the worst mommy in the world.......... I've hurt this poor little pup and there's nothing I can do to take it back. I just can't beleive this happened. I'm always so careful with little ones. I just don't know how this happened. She hasn't ever been able to climb the back porch steps before and I ran so it's not like I was going slow to give her a chance to get up the steps. I just didn't see her there and now she's hurt and probably needs surgery and she's just barely 2 lbs. I just don't know how she's gonna survive all of this that I put her through.:( |
Im sorry this happened to your baby...Im wondering though if it is broken? I would think if it were, it would be dangling? I dont THINK she would be able to pull it up like that? Im not sure, so dont quote me. Also I would think she would still be screaming bloody murder...can you feel the leg without getting bitten again? See if you can feel a break..maybe if it is you can get a popsicle stick and cloth and wrap it up? I am not much help I know...hope she is alright!! DO NOT blame YOURSELF for an accident!! It wasnt done intentionally to hurt her. Please keep us posted. Dawn |
I do beleive I feel a break right were the foot bends to the leg. It is all swollen and she does try to bite me if I touch it. I think she's in shock too because she is wanting to sleep and not be touched at all. :( I can't help but blame myself because I should have taken more precautions before slamming the door behind me. It was totally my fault rather it was an accident or not. I just can't beleive this. My vet will probably think I'm the worse owner ever. |
No matter if its broken or not it is what it is...an accident..please dont beat yourself up over it... Dawn |
Girl you have just got alot on you and accidents happen so don't beat your self up so much....:) Your not a bad mommy....:) |
Have you been able to talk to the vet yet? I hope you and her are ok. :) |
I just got off the phone with him and he said that it did sound like it was broke and to bring her in first thing in the morning for surgery to fix it.:( I think I'm going to cry now. |
Awww You poor thing! I will say a special prayer for your baby....Don't worry it will be ok. God Bless.... |
Hang in there, girl. I know right now life feels like it totally sucks and knowing you hurt your baby (even though it was an accident) is making you feel even worse. But, try to let it all go. Tomorrow will still come and everything will work itself out. Please give your little baby a hug from us and have her give you a kiss from us, too. We will all get through this together. Please let us know how she is tomorrow. We'll be thinking of you... |
Don't cry :) It was an accident. Just go and lay with her and make her comfortable till morning. She knows you didn't mean it. Think positive  You'll go to the vet tomorrow, your vet will fix her right up, and things will start to feel better. We'll be here if you need to talk it out. IT WILL GET BETTER !!! It will....I swear :) |
It was certainly an accident but IMO I would rethink my vet. I cannot believe he told you to wait until morning. Personally with 8 furbabies, I could not have a vet like that! |
Why? He said I could bring her in but they would put off surgery until morning since she ate recently. I might as well keep her here with me and save a little money. I trust my vet totally! |
Prayers for you & your baby. |
Accidents Accidents happen. You and your baby will be in my prayers tonight. God Bless you and yours, Teri:animal-pa |
Accidents do happen. You heard your child scream, right? Accidents do happen, even to the best of us. Don't keep beating yourself up on it. Let us know how the surgery went. Keeping you both in my prayers. |
I don't have a clue, just wondered... Does EVERY break need surgery? How does he know it will need surgery without having seen it. If it's broken is there no chance it could be casted? |
Accidents are just that please don't put that stress on you now you have to many other stresses right now. The vet will fix her up. |
How are you and your baby doing today? |
How is she ? Please, let us know as soon as possible. |

I hope all went well at the vet this morning.Keep us posted! |
I am so sorry this happened to you and your little one. Like everyone has said "accidents do happen". Let us know how you are both doing when you get a minute. |
Sorry to hear your baby might have a broken foot. It was not on purpose, accidents happen to all of us. The important thing is your getting her help. Good luck, hope all goes well today. Carol & Buddy:aimeeyork |
Update!!!!! The puppy and I are finally back from the vet. Everything looks fine! Believe it or not she doesn't have a broken foot/leg. She is just fine. The vet said he couldn't find anything wrong with her. She is still screaming and yelping about her leg but if you aren't watching her she is running and playing on it. The vet said that she may be acting like it still is in alot of pain because I babied her when she got hurt and she liked all the extra attention. |
So happy to hear your baby is okay. I have to admit, Little Bit is quite the "Drama Queen" herself.:) |
Glad to hear.. Glad to hear that all is well. The little "drama queen" may have some bruising or swelling and soreness. I hope she keeps playing. Blessings, Teri:animal-pa |
I am so glad she didn't break it.....Hope things are going better for you today.....:) |
I'm so happy for you. When you said she would bite, I thought for sure that meant she was in a whole lotta pain and it was at least fractured. I have shut a few paws in doors over the years myself, but besides a yelp all seemed fine within a few minutes. Glad she's okay. |
