| Second liver shunt for my Indy Hi all. I haven't posted in awhile but I got some not so good news on Friday. As some of you may remember my Indy had liver shunt surgery a year ago. It was pretty straight forward, no complications and the shunt is completely tied off. I kept up on the post op bile acids, his 6 month had his fasting almost normal and his eating one completely normal. I had another done in July and they were elevated again. We put him back on the L/D diet and did another one in Aug and they had almost doubled from July. I took him back to the surgeon on Fri and the ultrasound showed another shunt! Good news was that his liver had almost doubled in size since his last surgery and is completely normal size now and the veins going into the liver were bigger and completely normal looking. The doctors are stumped on why he would have developed another shunt. It is an outside the liver shunt so it is operable and can be tied off so I just try not think about the money and focus on the fact that it can be fixed! Just seems so unfair that he has to have a second surgery and he's only a year old! Any one have any thoughts on a second shunt? |

| I feel so sorry for you and River. All I can wonder is why? He's still just a baby. Do they think they can explain it better after the surgery?

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I'm so sorry for the both of you! I thought most shunts were there at birth and maybe the vet can give you a break on the surgery since maybe they missed this one?

| He's definitely giving me a break on the cost, but it is still very expensive. When he did the first surgery this shunt would have been about the size of a thread and would easily be missed. The question is why did it fill out and form? His liver attained it's normal size and there was no portal hypertension, which basically means that the blood didn't get backed up in the main vein going into the liver. Usually second shunts form when the liver fails to develop and cannot handle the increased blood flow. That was not the case with Indy. But bottom line is, we're back to square one. If he doesn't have the surgery he will die and all the money I already put into saving him won't have mattered anyway, so I don't have much choice. It wouldn't matter whether they gave me a break or not. As my husband says, I have turned him into a terrible mamas boy, and I'm proud of it! |

| Poor little guy. I'll be praying for a successful operation and recovery. Hopefully, this will take care of it and he won't need any more surgeries.

| I'm so sorry. I can just imagine the struggle of paying for this type of surgery once in a lifetime, but twice???? I am glad he did so well the first time so most likely this time will also be a positive outcome. It seems like the vet could give you a big, big discount on this surgery, since it was missed the first time, but since I've never heard of this, maybe there was just no way to see it. Just when you think you've heard it all something new comes up. |
