| My poor little sweet pea.... I just took my chi to the vet b/c her eyes weren't looking shiny and he said she was developing cataracts and would go blind within a year. Does anyone have any info. about this and is there a way i can help my chi-wee? |

| Aww... poor little chi-wee Did the vet not say anything as far as removing the cataracts? Is it something that can be controlled with medication before the cataracts get worse? I hope he didn't just give you such a doomed sounding prediction without giving you some treatment alternatives... I would ask your vet more about it - like if the retina is actually damaged to the point that removing the cataracts would be futile... My aunt had a poodle with cataracts in both eyes and he lived a happy, full life - dogs have a great sense of hearing and smell, they can still carry on living active lives. I found this article on cataracts.. maybe it will help... http://www.peteducation.com/article....&articleid=407

| I had Yorkies who developed cataracts and lost their sight, except for maybe seeing some shadows. They managed, continuing to move around quite well. They didn't run as fast as they used to but that might have also been because they were getting older. The advice from the vet: Don't move the furniture. |

| I'm so sorry you got bad news about your little chi. I agree with Oscar's Mummy..that vet should have given you treatment options and suggestions on what you can do for the little one. Best wishes...I hope you can get more info and hopefully a treatment option!!!

| chi-wee I'm so sorry to hear about your baby. We had poodles growing up and Napoleon went blind when he was just a puppy, he really didn't know the diffrence. He played ball (listened for it to bounce and would fetch it back and wait to hear it bounce again when you threw it. If nobody was able to play with him he'd jump on the couch and knock the ball off himself, go get it and do it again), they learn to adjust . He lived a long full life, was 15 when he passed.

| I'm assuming your little chiwee is a senior. The blindness comes on slowly and she may only be seeing shadows even at this time. Dogs are very adaptable and I think you will be amazed at how well she will do. |

| A natural treatment for stopping the progression of cataracts in humans is bilberry and Vitamin E. I'll do some more research and see if I can come up with a dosage for canines. |

| Try contacting one of these. I don't know if they are very far from you but if anything they can tell you what your options are. With your baby being so young, it may be a surgery you may want to consider. I had a poodle that got cataracts by the age of 2 she was almost completely blind. My dad decided to have them removed and she lived to be 15. She did start to loose her eye sight again as she reached her golden years but my dad felt it was worth it. I don't know what the cost will be but phone consultations are free so there is no finances involved in making the calls (unless you count the phone bill!). I know what ever you decide to do, Chi-Wee will make the adjustments needed and be just fine. Dr. Paul D. daCosta, DVM Eye Center for Animals P.O. Box 791068 524 Moss Street New Orleans, LA 70179-1068 (504)-483-8704 Louisiana State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Baton Rouge, LA 70803 Phone: (225)-578-9600 Fax: (225)-578-8477

| That's so sad. She is young to have that problem. I've never seen it in a young doggie. I would definitely inquire into the cost of having them removed. They do it a lot anymore. Good luck!
