Maddie's been to the vet...this will gross you out! Oh my gosh...the trip to the vet! Thank goodness I went! She does have tonsillitis, (YorkieUSA yt'er Karen suggested that might be it...thank you Karen!), but the other part has me so totally freaked out and totally grossed out that I even toyed with the idea of not mentioning it on YT, but I'm going to because this place is for inofrmation and it could happen to another dog. Last night I found a sore on Maddie...kind of between the shoulder and neck. Actually my grandson found it and we thought at first it must be another tic. Now I think it is where she had the tic on her a couple of weeks ago and I could not find it after we pulled it off of her. When I got her to the vet, the sore was oozing...maybe from her bath...I may have irritated it while brushing her. The vet cut some of her hair away from the sore and then got an instrument and you will not believe what he pulled out of that sore! A maggot! He said a fly had layed an egg in a sore on her and that happens. He layed it on the table and it was wiggling. I told him I was going to throw up and he said, "Don't throw up!" Oh man oh man. I am so totally grossed out and itching like a crazy fool! I have hardly seen a fly here all summer, but at the dog park the other night there was some little black bugs biting and bothering us. I'm thinking that's when it happened. Now I have to keep putting hydrogine peroxide on that sore and then neosporin and watch very carefully for any other sores on her. I did a quick search on the net and it says most dogs with that are neglected dogs. Maddie is by no means neglected, but I somewhat feel guilty that this happened, though I don't know what I could have done to prevent it. Maybe if I'd have found that tic site and been able to keep it clean, but with all her hair, I searched and searched in vain. Anyway, I hope by putting this on YT, that everyone doesn't think of Maddie as Maggot Maddie. That's what my grandkids were calling her, but I'm going to put a stop to that. She's on Clavaox for 10 days for her tonsillitis and for that sore and I'm to give her half a baby aspirin per day. Oh me oh my! I told my vet if I'd ever dreamed something like this could happen, I would have never gotten a dog! I am so totally freaked! When I got home I called my mom and she told me that used to happen to the farm animals and when they got a cut or sore, they'd put tar on it to keep flies from laying eggs. I had never heard of anything so gross! Maddie's tonsils are really swollen so he's sure that's what caused all the honking noises and he said there's lots of foam around the tonsils so that's where the white foam came from. My poor little Maddie! He also expressed her anal glands and said if they are full, that can sometimes lead to tonsillitis...though there wasn't much in there. She's on the road to recovery and I hope none of you think less of Maddie and I after reading this gross story! I just wish I could quit itching! I get that way whenever hearing about tics or fleas. I think I need to open a bottle of wine! |
You open that bottle of wine, Connie and take a big, long swig!!!! I'm glad Maddie is on the road to recovery and her poor little throat will be feeling better in no time. I won't even use the word, but the "m" things is truly disgusting, but you definitely didn't do anything that caused it. You are probably right in thinking it was the biting flies at the park. Could have happened to any of us!! |
aww...Poor little Maddie! No one would ever think of her as Maggot Maddie and I am so glad that you decided to post what happened because I would have never thought that was possible unless I read it with my very own eyes. The important thing is that Maddie is on her way to getting better. Hugs to you and Maddie! |
Oh poor Maddie and poor Mom!! Please don't feel bad it could happen to anyone. Luckily you got it diagnosed and Maddie will be on the road to recovery! |
Poor Maddie. Ya that is a bit on the gross side, but thanks for posting. I will know what to suspect if something like that happens with my pup. Creeps me out when I think about it. Please keep us posted on how she is doing. :getwellso |
Hope Maddie starts feeling better soon. Don't smack yourself over the maggot thing, maggots are used in medicine to heal sores. Disgusting, but true. Look it up. Anyway, it could happen to any of us, so you just worry about getting Maddie back to her old self. (I didn't even know dogs had tonsils). That's what I like about this place. Soooooo much information - no charge. |
Aww poor maddie, that is a bit unpleasant, but these things happen and it doesn't mean she is neglected! it could happen to anyone of us! we all know your a good mama! I hope she will be feeling better soon! sending lots of hugs, to that baby girl :hearts6: |
Oh man Connie - poor girl with the tonsillitis ! She must have such a sore throat - I had that often as a kid and it hurts ! I know you must be so relieved they found out what was going on so quickly...she is going to get all better now and be back to her old self... :getwellso :getwellso :getwellso on the other thing....THAT CAN HAPPEN TO ANY OF OUR DOGS ! Don't you dare be grossed out or feel bad. Maddie is a beautiful pampered yorkie and we all know this - there is no reason for you to be embarrassed. Dogs have parasite problems ...they can get worms ...fleas ticks and yes - what happened to her can happen - easily - the conditions must have been just right for her to have eggs layed on her but it sure doesn't mean anything but BAD Luck ....and good luck that your vet found this early !! so you should be proud of yourself for taking such good care of your girl that they did see this.....YOU SHARING THIS was very big of you. Who knows how many people didn't know this can happen and now they will......No one would ever think less of that BEAUTIFUL GORGEOUS GIRL ...She's a :littleang so get that right out of your mind !! Sending Maddie tons of get well wishes - tell her to use her "Inside" voice because I bet it hurts to bark - poor girlie....:big_hug: :big_hug: |
I'm proud of you for having the courage to post that on here. I imagine I would have been hesitant too. It is pretty gross, but now we will all be aware that this can happen. Poor Mag... I mean Maddie :D |
I hope Maddie gets to feeling better. I'm so glad you took her and dont you ever feel bad.. You take great, awesome care of Maddie and everyone on here knows that. We would never think different. I never knew that could happen so just look at it as a lesson learned for all of us. Hope she gets to feeling better soon. I think after the day you had you might want to open two bottles of wine... lol hahaha. :) :) :) |
Ah, Connie honey!!! I sure wish this hadn't happen to you, but I am very proud of you for sharing your story with all of us. We all know that Maddie is very well taken care of, and you would do anything to make her well and happy at all times. Don't you worry that ANY of us would ever ever think less of you sweetie!! Give little Maddie a get better hug from Aunti G!! And give yourself one from me, too!! |
Oh, don't let anyone call that sweet girl names....Maddie is so precious. I'm so glad she's on the mend. Your post was so informative...we all learned from it, I'm sure. :goodpost: |
I'm glad you went to the Dr and found out what was wrong. I had to be really careful with Muffin, because cold air (air conditioning) or simply sticking her nose out the car windows when the temp was in the 50's would bring the tonsillitis on. I always had to keep checking her at night when I rolled over to be certain she was still covered up, because if she got too cold, she'd wake up coughing like you described. I know that sound by heart. Believe me! I'm glad you talked about the tick bite, because I didn't know that and it is certainly good to be aware of it. Who knows? Any of us could have that happen! So glad your little angel Maddie is on the mend tonight. Take care.:) |
Ahh sweet little Maddie is sick. I am so sorry. I hope she gets to feeling better soon. I am sure she is loving all the attention she gets while you tend to her. Strange things can happen to our little guys. Starsky and Shylah send lots of hugs and kisses your way to make Maddie feel better!! :getwellso :love-hug3 |
Im sorry that happen to your poor Maddie but let me tell you what happen to someone i know...I have a co-worker who went to vacations to Puerto Rica.. Her and her hubby tour around, came back about two weeks later...So she came back to work, after a couple of weeks she started to complain about how much her head started to hurt only on her right side...Then she started having headaches everyday on the same side...I told her she should go to the doctor and tell him about it...They ran lost and lost of test and couldnt find out what was rong with her...So then she felt like the docter wasnt doin much for her so she looked for another doctor...This new Doc. asked her alot of ?? till it came down to were he said he was gonna have to cut her hair right on the spot she complained about so they did and guess what they found  ?????...YES a magget...A really big, fat magget...She also got it from a fly...So what they had to do was the worst...She had to keep that magget in her head for 3 more days knowing it was still alive...The reason why they did that was because like i said it was still alive in a bit far in the head...They put something like a tape to cut the magget from getting any air and making it come up for air...Anyway it ended up dying and the doctor pulled it out and that was that...So dont feel bad it happens to humans to not just pets.... |

That is really weird. UHG I can imagine how she hated leaving it there once she knew it was in there. One would just want to stand in the shower for like 3 dys. |

Oh Maddie, poor baby. I'm glad mommy took good care of you. Maddie's mommy, don't feel bad. Things happen. jenbermu: that is totally gross. I saw that on ER untold stories or something like that. This woman complained about feeling something... I missed that part. anyway the er doc was looking at the top of her scalp and when he pressed down on it the worms popped through. it was gross... she too had been in costa rica. she could feel them crawling around.. bleek... pass the wine... |
Thanks for the information, I would not thought of the tonsils problem or a maggot problem. I would of freaked out too. |
Wow...what would I ever do without all you yt'ers support! I am feeling better after reading all your threads, but I still say that is the grossest thing...seems like that sort of thing is meant for a horror movie! I still feel as if I have creepy crawly things on me...so does my daughter! I think Maddie is already feeling a bit better. She sleeps a lot, but that is good...t'will help her heal. The site of the sore...she is very swollen in that area, but the meds should also help that. My vet didn't think Maddie got her tonsillitis from me, but I really wonder. I've had a cold and sore throat and probably shouldn't have let her give me kisses. I'm going to be more careful about that when I'm sick, just in case it was from me. My gosh...the story about the worm in the ladie's head...that is truly creepy and if it were me, they'd have to put me in a state of comatose if the darn thing had to live in there for 3 more days! Yikes. One thing about Maddie...it was a very small one, so we did catch it very early. Otherwise, it would have kept growing. Ewwwwwww! *Passing the wine to Tiggerwit!* |
Doesn't gross me out that much! These things just happen. But, I'm glad that you visited the vet and got it taken care of. Carol Jean |
Thank you for sharing your story, it shows us what CAN happen to these kids! Glad Maggie is feeling better! Give her extra hugs from us.:aimeeyork I bet that wine was divine lol... i would have done the same thing!;) |
I'm just plain proud of you Connie - many people would never think this could happen and NOW they do thanks to you - How is Maddie today ? I just sent you a pm - but I wanted you to get those silly Grandkids on your computer ...(I have to admit I laughed when I read that part of your post Connie) I have a message for them ....Hey Kids - Hi - This is Villette in Houston - a friend of your grandma......:) PLEASE call that Gorgeous little Girl....MAHVELOUS MADDIE from now on.....OK ? It will make your grandma feel MUCH better and she really IS a marvelous little yorkie.....OK ? Thanks ! |
Ewwwwwww!!!!!!!! Quote:
Oh, I watched something similar on a show the other night.......I thought I would never have to think of if again.....it was the grossest thing I have ever seen., I thought I would puke... .....I never thought it could happen to a person.... Goes to show you......:tongue012 :tongue012 |
That is gross but i am glad you posted it it could happen to someone elses dog and them not know what it is. |
I'm sharing this here Connie - because what happened to Maddie could have been much worse....You mentioned Dog Parks - so I want to post this here....and let you know that what happened may have been gross at the time - but BE thankful it wasn't something worse.. My friend Jamie and I meet at a Dog Park here in Houston - My girls - and her little Katie.... are such mommies girls they hardly walk around - But....Her 6 year old Gracie just strolls ALL OVER the park - She's a hoot - just walks around enjoying herself - no leash - nothing - she's such a good girl - They don't really know if this happened at the dog park - but it probably did:( Gracie started biting and biting her foot - they went to the vet - the vet gave them antibiotics - and weeks of treatment - the foot didn't get better - It ended up like RAW Hamburger - So MORE vet visits & BIG BUCKS later - after skin scrapings and all sorts of tests and medications ...My frienbd even had to give her injections at home - - they finally diagnosed her with under the skin mites....and they still wouldn't go away - I talked her into MY vet who I think is great - and they got her on track and her foot finally started healing - but this took like 3-4 MONTHS....The vets she was going to tried their best but man - Mites are hard to get rid of and her little foot was a mess ...Actually they were even saying she could lose her foot And my Friend is one of THE BEST Yorkie moms I know - She lives for her 2 girls and they get the best vet care and love and attention -this foot was a FLUKE .....Just like what happened to Mahvelous Maddie :) A FLUKE !!! |
V that is so awful that that happened to your friend. That dog is lucky to not have lost its foot. Chachi had Mites and it took alot to get rid of them. I cant imagine under the skin mites. Theres someone on this forum now that dog has them and they cant get rid of them. When Chachi had them his entire back was raw. I feel for anyone who has to deal with mites. |
Quote:
Oh man Chachi - I saw her foot when it didn't look so bad - but she was practically in a cast it was so bad for a while..... Do you remember who's yorkie has mites here ? I could tell my friend about them and she'd be happy to talk to them - it was so hard for them to get it cleared up - She could tell it better than me - but they were at the vet every WEEK for months - it was awful and Gracie WAS lucky she didn't lose her foot - I have to praise my vet here - once they started seeing him instead of the vet they were going to - Things started looking up - I won't say they weren't treating her right but it was THAT bad that nothing was working to heal the Rawness and get rid of the mites.....he's the one who finally got the right treatment going ...but it took a long long time. Poor Chachi - and on his back of all places - that had to be so horrible itching like that and not being able to scratch it. I remember what you went thru and they are NO FUN at all - It sounds like nothing to hear people talk about these kinds of things - but when you've actually experienced it - you know how bad it really is.....and you hurt so much for your dog. |
V the member whose dog has mites is thisHunny and if your friend contacted her that would be great. She is in Canada. Her vet is only prescribing medication for it and it isnt helping. She has pmed me a couple of times about it. |
Oh wow, Villette! I am thanking my lucky stars that Maddie will hopefully heal quickly and it's a one-time thing! I feel so bad for that poor baby you were telling about! Thank goodness your vet came to the rescue! I bet she's keeping that vet, huh? I will not be letting Maddie run around the dog park anymore. I can't say for sure that's where she got this, but it was after the dog park that all her problems started. That same night she was having those sneezing fits or whatever they were...less than an hour after we got home. Up until then, I hadn't noticed anything with her. I'll still go there...to the dog park. I go visit a friend when she takes her boxers there...but, I'll be holding Maddie. Tell your friend I'm so glad her little sweetie didn't end up losing her foot!!! |
