| very sick rescue dog Hi everyone I just got Peety lastnight from someone who could not care for him and OMG!!!!! His coat was all dread locks, fleas all over him and he seems to have a irregular bowl movement. i had to cut all his hair off and his skin seemed to be completely bitten by fleas. I am doing everything I can to get him better. He is eating and getting use to his new family. He is very defensive and has a hard time been friendly with other dogs. I already own a dog (BOOBOO) and i need to know how can I get him to like her? I guess I need to know as much as I can about Yorkies since this is my first one. Any tips will help, so don't be shy |

| First of all welcome. What a great person you are to take in this little one. I would just be patient with both dogs and keep an eye on them it will take a little while for everyone to get use to each other. How old are your dogs? Do you know if he was abused in anyway? Just make sure that you try and show both dogs equal amount of attention and once they realize that neither of them are going anywhere they may become the best of friends. Have you schedule a vet appt yet to have him looked over good?

| Poor little guy and isn't it a sin on how some people treat their animals...I see it all to often. Okay here is my advise and I hope it helps. 1. First you need to take this little one to the vet to make sure it does not have any diseases that can be passed on to BooBoo. I would do a blood panel but it is not cheap but well worth finding out what shape your little one is in. 2. The vets office could also do a flea dip that could kill these miserable little buggers. 3. Your little one needs a lot of time to adjust and should be put into a very quiet area and everyone leave him alone for a while until he starts making adjustments and cries to join everyone. 4. He is biting out of fear and could bite you and any member of your family. This is the only defense these little ones have. When I take in a rescue in this shape first they are kept away from the gang until the vet has cleared them from any disease. Sometimes they stay in the spare bedroom for 2 weeks as I will not harm my other dogs. I then take the new one out to the backyard and put them in an Xpen so they are protected from the other dogs until the doggy HI (smelling each other is over with) and then I let him come out of the area. My backyard is fenced so everyone can run around and I don't worry about someone taking off. It is critical you watch for any signs of aggression from any of the dogs and you will need to step in if there are any issues. Fear aggression is what is going on in your home right now and you need to keep the dogs separated until the new one becomes more comfortable. We call this the honeymoon period. What is your other dog? How many children are in the home? how many people are in the home? Quiet and rest is very important during these transition times. No one should force this little one into a situation where he is frightened. Do not introduce him to any other dogs as Yorkies have a HIGH fear level of other dogs and will attack which means the other dog could go after him and kill him. Other dogs might not want to do this but it is their nature to protect themselves. What are you feeding him? He might end up with diarrhea due to a change in food. I hope this helps you. P.S. How much does he weight?

| Thank you so much for the replies. I have a vet appointment for him today and I gave him a flea dip last night. My other dog who is a pit bull is doing really good with him, she is use to other dogs cause we socialized her alot. She seems to understand that he is scared and sick. He has made a vast improvement from last night he is giving me kisses and laying with BooBoo when they are sleeping I am feeding them Dick Van Pattens. Right now he weights about 3-4 lbs @ 4 month but looks really skinny. BTW: no need to inform me to that my pit bull may hurt him or that I need to be careful with them together. She is well-trained and behaved and has care 24/7. If you have concerns about pit bulls behavior, go to www.game-dog.com Last edited by becasherwood; 06-21-2006 at 08:17 AM. |

| I like the advice to keep things quiet for him for awhile, and not throw any more new experiences/people/places at him until he's feeling healthy and safe and confident. He's so young....quiet love and reassurance will go a long way towards counteracting how miserable his life has been so far! Keep us updated on his story! I'm so glad that he's already improving, and feeling more at home!

| I'm glad he's finally found a good home. It's amazing how fast these little rescues turn around. With one so young, I'm sure he will fit right into your family in no time at all. Let us know how the vet check up goes. |

| Becasherwood -- I'm not worried about your pitbull at all. I know they are often the sweetest dogs in the world. Actually, having another dog for a friend is probably the best thing that can happen for your new little pup. They may soon become inseparable. My little Yorkie and my 4-year-old Bichon quickly became best friends. Good luck with your new little pup. |
