I wormed the mum at the same time. The little girl is looking a bit poorly, suckling off the mum,but looks a bit dehydrated and feels hot. Should I give her water and sugar????? | You can tell the state of dehydration by "pinching" the skin on the shoulder blade. If the skin remains "pinched up" and doesn't spring back to normal the pup is dehydrated. The longer it takes to go back to normal the more dehydrated she is. Are her gums a healthy pink and moist? If you take the puppy's rectal temperature it should be about 101.5 degrees. Did you use a wormer especially for puppies under 8 weeks old like pyrantel pamoate for the mom and the puppies? Did you follow the dosage and weigh the puppies? |

Don't second guess! Head to the vet ASAP! We assume the meds we give these babies are gonna be okay for one and all and that is not the case. Why did you worm them? Is it your and your vet's routine? Many do it so I am NOT criticizing...but, anything that is toxic enough to kill worms might be too strong for our tiny babies. Good luck with your sweetie. Remember, you did nothing wrong so no matter the diagnosis, don't blame yourself. Some Yorkies just do not handle these meds very well...

Sick Pups - help - Thanks thanks for all your sound advise, I have just returned from the vets with the 2 small sick puppies - did say that probably the wormer was a little strong. Given me some electrolites, no food just syrigne full every hour - onto 2nd hour and already what a difference, they are already alert and more aware!. thanks to you both for replying to my plea! Will post pictures of pups saturday.

Glad to hear they're doing better. I know some say to worm as early as 2 weeks, but I never do and have never had a problem. I worm the Mom around 4 months before mating and then again 3 weeks after whelping. I don't worm the puppies unless a fecal exam tells me I need to.

pups/Maiden Bitch having problem with laptop so if you get 3 messages sorry! Yes glad pups ar doing well. Penny is such a good mum, the weakest one earlier she cleaned and caressed him, she knew he was not too well. I also have Shashamarnie Welsh Bliss who is 2 years old next month, and due her first litter within the next few days, She also the vet today, who said she has quite a few pups. Do hope she will be ok, im sure she will as her mum Derry Bliss (Holly) was a fantastic mum. Would you think that Marnie has Hollys breeding trates???

Congrats. Did your vet suggest doing an X-ray to see number and size of puppies? I personally think it is wise to know those 2 things to help ward off trouble. I have a friend who is an experienced breeder and she was sure her mom was "full of puppies!" She had an X-ray done to make sure and there is one HUGE puppy tht the mom will never pass. A c-section is scheduled for day #68....
