| Baby with Kennel Cough My yorkie, Lexxie started coughing two days ago. I took her to the vet and they diagnosed her with Kennel Cough. The thing is, is her coughing seems to get worse when I pick her up or hold her. Have any of you experienced this? I have a little boy yorkie named Bailey who is only two days older than her. They play together all the time. The vet gave me antibiotics for both of them because they were pretty sure that he'd end up with it before long. Listening to Lexie cough is so tough. It just breaks my heart. She coughs so much and then throws up. I feel bad for her. I just wish there was some way I could help her. How do I know if it turns into pneumonia? Do the symptoms get worse or do they have to do a chest xray to find out? |

| I really can't help you much, sweetie. I wish you the best with your darlings..but I think as long as you give them all the antibiotics they should be fine...best wishes...

Our Blessings R Many Donating Member | Did your shots include the kennel cough shot? I was wondering is she had the shot before she got this? I was wanting to get the kennel cough shot for Baby Blessing but the vet said she didn't need it. I think I am going to inquire on that again. I am hearing so many are getting this it makes me wonder about the shots for it. I pray your baby will be ok very soon and that the other doesn't get it. Patti |

| My baby has it too I have had my yorkie since Jan....and he still has it along with and enlarged heart and chest x-ray confirmed all this. My pup was too young, when the creep I got him from, "claims" his shots were administered....therefore the shots did absolutely no good. The cough is heart breaking to listen to and I go around since January with worry everyday . My baby has suffered so , and has been on 4 different rounds of anti-biotics now. He sounds like a 90 year old little man with emphysema. Count your blessings, I think your baby will get over the kennel cough..(my vet told me he has seen the cough last for months)...be thankful that he doesn't have Congestive Heart Failure. From our house to yours, lots of yorkie kisses and prayers. They are so innocent and sweet. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali had it when got her in the end of August and after 3 rounds of antibiotics she still had it and so did my 9 year old Pom. It just went away finally after about 4 months. My Pom still coughs a little. Just watch it doesn't get worse. I kept taking Cali in to have them check her lungs out to make sure it wasn't getting worse. Hopefully it will get better soon.

| Both of ours had something similar to this that they developed shortly after we adopted them. I'm not sure if the vet ever decided whether it was officially "kennel cough" or something else. I think the term "kennel cough" can refer to several respiratory/cough problems. Anyway, it lasted 3-4 months, and we went through at least three rounds of antibiotics for it. But they both eventually got better. He also prescribed a cough suppressant to help keep the cough under control. And he said we could use Children's cough medicines in very small doses for the cough, too. About pneumonia - each time you visit the vet, he/she should listen to your dog's lungs with a stethoscope. They'll be able to tell if there is any fluid collecting in them, and if there is, then they'll probably do further tests to determine if pneumonia has developed. It never did in either of ours. The vet can also tell a lot just from listening to the dog cough and from taking its temperature. One other thing - our vet put off vaccinating our boys for kennel cough (bordatella vaccine) until they were both healthy. They were close to 5 or 6 months old before they got it. I think it's really only necessary if your dogs are going to be interacting with other dogs - for example, our vet requires dogs who come in for grooming, day-care and boarding to be vaccinated. Hope this helps, and hope Lexxie feels better soon! Just keep in mind that it can take a while to get rid of it. It's awful to listen to and watch her suffer through, but she'll probably have a stronger immune system for it in the end.

| My baby has it now. She is on her (I think) 4th round of antibiotics. The vet had me get regular cough medicine. No pnuemonia yet, but they did a trachea wash the other day. Good news is that bacteria started to grow so we are close to an answer on what exactly is wrong. She gets better it seems then bad again. I noticed the other day that when i pick her up she starts coughing again. It seems worse in AM and at night when she is trying to rest. She still plays full steam ahead which is a good sign. We have a great vet who really cares and is working hard to get her well. We are having to keep her and my dtr's yorkie apart which is hard in a mobile home. They take turns playing in the living room. We even have to keep their toys a part. I WANT MY BABY BETTER!!

| Hey J is my initial I have a 8 month old female that has been coughing for 5 months now. She is on her 4 round of antibiodics also and she seems to get better and then she gets worse. She had pneumonia and she is over it but she still is coughing. It is worse in the am after she wakes up and also at night when she tries to sleep. My vet told me if this round of medicine doesn't work then they will do a trachea wash. I am reluctant to put her threw that because I heard it was pretty evasive. How did your dog do after the wash and what kind of medicine is she on now? I am curious to know because the symptoms are the same as your dog's. Thanks |

| Gypsy came away from the trachea wash like it was nothing. She is now on clavamix again. For a while she was on celpha drops (?). I was told if the culture did not grow they would have an answer in 2-3 days. If something started to grow then it would take several days. Thank goodness it started to grow. Hopefully they will have it pinpointed soon. She has an appt today at 3. I will post what the vet says.

| Thank you so much My dog is also on clavomax for the second time. She was on Baytril for 30 days do knock out the pneumonia. I guess I will do the wash. It just sounds horrible. By the way does gypsy cough up white foam or mucus because mine does. She has no mucus in her lungs so the vet thinks its secreting from her throat. Also she kind of lost her bark. She barks a little but its very hoarse. Keep us posted. Thanks. |

| She cough up mucus about 2 or 3 times.Scared me to death! I thought she had gotten into something. I did not see her cough it up, just noticed it on her mouth. I feel like a terrible mom that she is not doing better. The vet says I am doing everything I can, but still.....

| My vet also mentioned tracheal collapse. But my wife and I don't believe it. She has had 3 x rays and there is no major sign of collapse. The only thing that is deterring me from trachea collapse is the fact that she doesn't cough when she runs around and gets excited. She actually does better when she runs around. She is at her worst when she is laying down or just waking up. Is this the case with Gypsy too? Good luck today. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. |

| She doesn't when she runs around at all. She continues to run around at full speed and play. The vet does not suspect tracheal collapse with her. They have also done several xrays. laying down and getting up in the morning seems also to be her worse times. Definitely sounds like the same thing.
