Default Allergies..Kennel Cough..I just don't know?!?!?

My Jazzy has been which sounds to me like sneezing for over a month now. I took her to the Vet he gave me some Amoxicillan. That didn't help. I took her back he said change her food (she's was on Royal Canin) because she could be allergic to it. So I started giving her Eukenuba. She's still sneezing which sounds like she's hawking up a freakin hairball. The woman I bought her from said she might have kennel cough but i'm sure the Vet would've said that if she did and it doesn't sound like a cough to me. What is wrong with my sweet baby?!?!? Anybody ever experience this with their puppy. I'm starting to think she has allergies or something. I feel like a bad mother.

It could be reverse sneezing which is harmless or kennel cough that has to be treated with antibiotics. Has your vet checked her for kennel cough? Good luck I hope she gets better soon.

Ask your Vet, but I believe Chachi's Mom is right. It's most likely reverse or "inverted" sneezing, as my Vet refers to it. I've seen it in several toy breeds. You can look it up on the internet. It can be caused irritation of the bronchial tubes, stress, or just nothing. The narrowed bronchial tubes in toy breeds makes them prone to it. It's only worrisome if they get scared and can't get their breath. I calm my Peanut when she does it by stroking her slowly and telling her it's OK until it resolves itself. She does it less and less as she has grown and she's now 5 yrs old.

You're NOT a bad mom, and we all feel that way when there's something going on with one of our "babies" that we feel powerless to stop.

Don't worry....

Ok i'm starting to worry more and more as I read post in this forum. Ok she sneezes but she also makes this sound like akkkkkkkkkkkkk u know like something is caught in her throat. Also she coughs up this phlem but she swallows it. UGH i'm pulling my hair out right now because i'm praying she doesn't have a collapsed trachea or pneumonia. My bf said the vet checked for collapsed trachea the last time and said she didn't have one but I wasn't there so I don't know!! I'm really upset at this point.

Poor little Jazzy! Let me describe what my Peanut does:

She sounds as if she's going to hurl any second. For several secongs to a minute she arches her back a little and puts her head down a little and makes these loud dry heaving sounds. Occasionally, it sounds like she gets something up, but she must swallow it because it never comes out. If you've ever seen a cat hack up a furball, this is similar, but more violent. Her whole little body spasms with the effort of it.... and this is what several Vets have told me is inverted sneezing.

Don't worry yourself to death over it... just take Jazzy back to the Vet or call the Vet the next time she does it and ask them to listen.... You need your piece of mind and it's worth every penny to know what's going on.

Good luck, we'll all be thinking of you....let us know how it turns out.

It sound like Jazzy has what my dog Holly has. She had a hairball cough and I took her to the vet for x rays and they found pneumonia. She has been on Baytril for 4 weeks. We went for a second x ray and the pneumonia is gone but she still has the hacking cough. The x ray also found a partially collapsed trachea. After doing alot of online research and from all the info from this forum I found out that that hairball cough is part of the trachea problem. Supposedly they are clearing their airway by doing that. Mind you before the hacking up the cough begins with rapid goose honk sound then she will run from wherever she is to the corner of the room and try and hack something up. This happens about six times a day. Being that she is clear of pneumonia I figure this cough will be here forever. But I will definitely ask my vet for different types of cough suppressants and anti inflammatorys. Don't let this forum scare you or worry you in any way. There are alot of Yorkie owners in the same boat. The only thing you can do is learn about the disease and treat it in the best available way. My wife and I where scared out of our minds until we found this forum. It has helped immensely.

Default coughing and sneezing

My puppy was diagnosed with kennel cough two days after we got him. He has been on three different antibiotics, and it is getting better, but he still coughs and wheezes. He sounds like a cat coughing up a hairball too. He also wheezes and sounds like a kid with asthma when he plays too hard. I hope it is just that kennel cough takes a long time to get over, and it's nothing else! I wonder why they can't vaccinate puppies for kennel cough. Good luck with your puppy.

Collapsing trachea is not something a Yorkie "gets" like a cold or something. It is actually a congenital condition that occurs in a lot of toy breeds. The ones with shorter muzzles are more prone to it, but any dog can be affected. The vet will gently squeeze a place on the throat of the dog and that can reproduce the sound you hear if it is C.T. If a young puppy has symptoms already, surgery sometimes is needed to help them....
A chest Xray can show changes in the trachea if the problem is severe. The little cartilage rings that keep the trachea open are oval and soft instead of round and firm. This can cause the problem...

Well I couldn't sit around and wait a week to take her back to the vet so I took her yesterday to another vet to see what he said and he said she has kennel cough so she's on meds right now. I'm glad that was the only thing wrong with her.

Animal Smiley 036 Hyperventilating

Do anyone's dogs sound like they are hyperventilating sometimes? Both my chihuahua and my son's small Jack Russel do this. It's like they can't catch their breath and they do seem to almost panic sometimes. If I pick them up and pet them and tell them it's okay they settle down and stop. My yorkie also used to do this. Is this what you mean by inverse sneezing? It's almost like they can't catch their breath.

I just went through this same thing with Buddy last week! The hairball hack and "sneeze" - on the x-ray they initially took they saw something not right with his Trachea - the vet said that sometimes this can just "happen" - doesn't necessarily mean he/she was born with it - but in Buddy's case he has stopped (he was on Clavamox for about a week due to the other aspects of his illness) and the vet said the "Tracheosis" will take a few more days to get totally better, but he should be OK.

I really think it was brought on by stress - I had left him over the weekend at his day care place because I was starting to lose my mind from puppy stress of my own!

Again - thank goodness for all of you and this place, or I'd just think I was going crazy!
