1 Attachment(s) Whatever you do, give her the calcium! VERY INPORTANT!!! I had a momma dog once who actually had rigors and seizures...I thought she would die on me on the way to the vet...her legs were standing out straight and shaking while she was laying down and she was unresponsive. She was a 100 pound bulldog too...not a tiny yorkie! They go down fast, so don't take any chances. I am not trying to scare you but do what these breeders are telling you...best of luck to you and your new babies...they can be such a joy!!! Here are the babies we raised!!! |
Hello Well I was calm but now after reading that my heart is beating like crazy. I gave her cottage cheese an egg and her dog food. As soon as my sister gets back I will give her the rest. She is acting fine right now so hopefully this is caught in time. I don't understand why my vet didn't act more concerned than he did. He just said she's fine just give her an egg and cook some of the eggshell with it. Now I know why I don't totally trust vets AND doctors. Not that I don't think they are good and know what they are doing but I"ve always said "a mama knows best"... P.S. MY husband isn't a true dog lover but he wants a bulldog sooo bad. lol.. |
2 Attachment(s) Well that momma and her babies were American Bulldogs. They are a lot sturdier than English Bulldogs and have a lot fewer health problems. Here is a pic of the Momma, Candy and one of a couple of her pups when they were about 6 weeks old...they were so much fun! But a lot of work too! She raised 8 babies from a litter of 9 - 1 was stillborn. But she had a bad round with calcium defeciency and mastitis in one breast...we got her thru it but had to really watch her. |
diet If you chop the "human" food very small and mix it well with a touch of water to adhere it she can not pick it out. |
As usual, you have gotten very good advice from some seasoned breeders. The egg shell must be smashed really small--it is pure digestible calcium. A nursing mom needs at least 300-400mgms of ELEMENTAL calcium a day. Read the labels on the tums or whatever calcium you use (I use plain human calcium tabs because there needs to be phosphorus and vit D before the body can use the calcium) and see what the actual calcium content is. IE: say the label says Calcium carbonate-500mgms. That does not mean that there is that much calcium-read the back of the label for the real calcium content. Whatever you give her, mash the human stuff small enough so that she has to eat some of the dog food as well when she is eating. Remember, asPat says, keep food down all the time. And, lots of water.....some people give milk but I find that many dogs cannot tolerate the lactose milk sugar so I do not use it. Maybe, 100% lactose reduced milk if you feel stromgly about giving it. Your vet is not your best source of info when it comes to breeding. Again, listen to the breeders on here and you cannot go wrong. Bet between us, we have over 50 years experience.. |

You have gotten some excellant advise from some of the most experienced breeders on here. I would trust what they have to say more than my vet. Vets arent always the expert when it comes to nutrition. |

I just wanted to let everyone know that tasha is doing alot better today. Yesterday she seemed to lay around alot. Today she is active and obviously feeling much better. She loves all the extra goodies she gets to eat now. I think no I know if I hadn't had the help from all of you I would of been taking her to the vet for an emergency. Instead I had the means to stop what could of been turned out to be a serious emergency. Thank you so much. |
Tally had puppies 5 weeks ago and she was really getting depleated and she is a very picky eater.WE tried feeding her everything sometimes she ate sometimes she wouldnt. The puppies were 1 week old and she had a bout with eclampsia, Took her away from the pups for 24 hrs got her shot of calcium and started feeding her Goats milk , which thank goodness she likes. Fed her rice gerber baby cereal/with goats milk for breakfast then a few bowls of goat milk aday plus anything else she'd eat, shes been fine ever since. Goats milk is high in calcium and easy to digest. |
I'm afraid to ever use goats milk again. I have done and do alot of foster care for animals. I had a litter of kittens that were doing great but it was expensive to buy pet formula and I was paying out of pocket for their care. I knew this lady that raised goats so she gave me goats milk. Every one of those kittens died after I switched them and I've never lost a whole litter. I've lost babies before but never a whole litter. I felt that the goats milk had something to do with that. So I've never used it. Now i know alot of people do and have luck with it but i'm too afraid to try it again. But I have used baby food and baby cereal and i love that. IT is easy for their lil tummy's to handle when swithching to food. I'm glad your babies and mama are fine now. Eclampsia is scary. |
I used canned goats milk not fresh. Not too sure about using right from the goat. |

Terry Shumsky was a yorkie breeder and judge and did a lot to help with finding a cure for liver shunt before she died last year. Here is a recipe from her book. I also saw it posted here in an older post. Good for picky eaters. Mix the following in a saucepan and cook to pudding consistency. 2/3 cup sugar 6 tablespoons cornstarch 1/2 teas salt 4 cups milk (or one can evap milk plus equal parts water to make quart) 4 egg yolks 3 teasp vanilla. feed with syringe, on spoon, or let eat from bowl. full of protein and nourishment....have never had it cause diarrhea. |
Tashasmom milk depletion Hi I'm surprised your vet didn't suggest you supplement the pups some. Or did he/she? I definitely would do at least 4 times a day until you can start weaning them. |
