| Bottom of Senior Yorkie's Left Eye suddenly became Red. Possibly Hyphema. Hi, Tonight almost all of a sudden our senior Yorkie's left eye took on a reddish tint in the bottom of the eye around the pupil. The outsides of the eye are normal colored. She's mostly acting like herself (still eating, running around, drinking water, following us etc.) We think it may be hyphema but are unsure. Has anyone had experience with this? Over the last week she has been pawing her eye occasionally, had white-ish goopy discharge for a day or two (three days ago), sometimes blinks more often in the left eye and occasionally seems a bit more confused when waking up, although it tends to only last for 5-10 minutes. We're hoping it will go away since she still seems happy/herself and doesn't seem to be in any pain, but we don't want it to get worse. Right now the plan is to call her vet tomorrow and see if we can get an appointment in the next day or two. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you. |

| Good idea to get it checked our little Lottie suddenly had a red sore eye and it turns out it was a tear in her cornea, she did not seem in pain but the vet says that it would have been very painful she got some antibiotic drops and some repair gel but it’s still getting treatment as she is 15 years old and it’s been slow to heal . Have you noticed her pawing at it or rubbing her face against anything?

| You should call your vet today and get her in to be seen ASAP! If she has been pawing at it, it is bothering her!

| Diagnosis and Treatment Thanks for the responses everyone. Our yorkie is 15 as well! We got her into the vet this morning and she was diagnosed with a superficial cornea ulcer or a small tear on the surface of her eye. She got prescribed some antibiotic eye drops, eye ointment along with a mild painkiller. The painkiller (gabapentin) is making her a bit loopy and uncoordinated so we may reduce the dose but we hope everything else is helping her make a recovery. Does anyone else have experience with that pain killer? We'll monitor her closely and bring her back in after 5-7 days. |

| I am SO glad you got her in! Ulcers can get out of control quickly and they are painful so the pain med is definitely needed. Yes, gabapentin can make them a bit goofy....you might want to call your vet and see if maybe a lower dose would be better.

| Hopefully she'll be back up and happier in a few days. She's been sleeping a lot and still very out of it. Going to see if she wants go to for a quick pee and meal in a little bit. How long does the medicine usually last? |

| My Max has extensive experience with eye ulcers and scratches. Cool, fresh air helped his eyes heal. Heat makes things worse. I discovered that if I carried him around outside in the cool air of morning or evening, his eye healed quickly. I carried him so that he wouldn't stick his face in grass and other things. The other thing that I learned is to put off bathing his head for at least 2 to 3 weeks. The newly healed cornea has to strengthen -- especially if it is a big ulcer. Max's worst one, I waited a month to fully wash his head. Instead, I gave his head a kind of "sponge bath" with a damp wash cloth. Best wishes to your doggy for a speed recovery.

| Getting better but green discharge Hi everyone, Thank you again for your concern and advice. She's doing a lot better today and seems like her normal self again (eating/drinking/running around). She can even open her eye normally again! The only thing we noticed is her discharge turned from white to green this morning. She does normally have reddish eye gunk so maybe that's mixing in with the medicine? It doesn't seem to bother her too much just wanted to make sure that wasn't anything to worry about. Has this happened to anyone else's yorkie who was getting treated? |

| No, I have not seen that in any of mine. I would call your vet and ask.

| Lottie has the exact same issue at the moment and the repair gel seem to make the eye discharge look a little green. Better speak to your vet to check though you can never be too careful .

| Good news and bad news Hi again everyone and thanks for all the support and experiences. The good news is we went back for a checkup and the ulcer is healed and the discharge has stopped! The bad news is our little one has glaucoma in one eye. The vet is optimistic that it is treatable and we started her on some new eye drops that will hopefully reduce the eye pressure and get it up and running again. She's going to get another checkup on Friday to see if the new meds are working properly. She seems to feel a bit better with them already and is still her silly self. Has anyone else successfully treated Glaucoma? |

| Yes, I have had pups with glaucoma. Some can be treated successfully with drops, some not as well. Hopefully she will be fine with the drops! I hate glaucoma. My Teddy Bear had it recently...his was due to a sudden formation of a cataract. Teddy is 15. His eye did respond but it shrunk up. I guess as long as it is no longer hurting that is good, but it breaks my heart. So happy to hear the ulcer is healed and the discharge has stopped.

| Update Mixed news Thanks everyone for checking in, She has an appointment tomorrow to see if the eye pressure is improving but there is still discharge and it looks swollen. She's still eating/drinking/going to the bathroom and moving around ,although is not thrilled some parts of the day. We are hoping for good news tomorrow but thinking of next steps if the numbers are still high. The vet mentioned last time there is an injection in the eye that does stop the glaucoma but she would have to go under twilight anesthesia and we are worried her kidneys wouldn't be able to handle it. |
