2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Senior pup with increased eye discharge! Why ? I have notice that this past six months or so my boy Quincy who is 12 now has had an increase in his eye discharge and that is crust over very quickly. It gets in his lower and upper hair around his entire eye (both of them) and can be painful when removed. I keep up on it as best I can, but those times that I get distracted it can really be bad. One day I will check them and they look fine and two days later they will be piled up with a thick black crusty mess. I put a warm washcloth over his eyes to moisten it, clean them by using my nails to pull it out of his hair and dig it out of the corner of his eyes. Than I've tried putting ointment (A&D or Vaseline) under his eyes but it doesn't seem to help much. I don't know if it is his age or if there is a medical reason for this. I haven't mentioned it to the vet as of yet since it has not been a serious issue until now. I fear that if I miss a cleaning that it will build up and scratch and damage his eyes. Has anyone else with a senior pup had this issue? If so how did you handle it and what did you do to prevent it from happening?

| Sounds like dry eye. He needs a vet! If he has it and you don't use the appropriate meds he will end up with eye ulcers next.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | At times I have noticed that his eyes are irritated, slightly red in color but after a cleaning that goes away. So it looks like I'll be making an appointment with my vet to see what they can do for him. I would hate for this to form into something worse. Thanks Linda

| I would get him in ASAP. It is nothing to mess with. AND...you really need to stop the use of A&D and vaseline on it....definitely not something you should apply. Inhalation of the vaseline could be hazardous ... any time you use a lubricant it should be water soluble or you can end up causing a type of pneumonia.

| The only OTC product I would suggest you use is: GenTeal Lubricant Gel Liquid Eye Drops, Moderate to Severe Dry Eye Relief | Walgreens But, that should not be in place of a vet visit and diagnosis. Eyes are very important...when they are red, it means they are irritated and need care.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I agree w/ Linda - you truly have to check this out w/ a vet bc it could be either an infection or dry eye, both of which need treatment.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Ok, vets office is closed til Monday so will call and make an appointment and will ask the vet about the use of those lubricants. She will more than likely subscribe something for use in his eye. We'll get him back to good health in no time. I'll check back once we've seen the vet.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Had our visit with the vet today . . they tested Quincy for dry eye and its - neg also for cataracts and also -neg. Very relieved about that. They have determined that he has clogged tear ducts which is what I figured it was. So we have eye drops once a day for the next ten days. Hope this helps !! This stuff: neomycin polymyxin b sulfates and dexamethasone ophthalmic suspension. I also had Ruby seen since she's been abusing the carpet and we have her on a topical steroid spray as needed for her allergies.
