| ACL problem. Help. Ruger is a 9 year old 14 lb Yorkie. He's been in excellent health until last week when he started limping and having trouble jumping up on chairs and the bed. Sometimes he walks around like he only has three legs and other times he acts as if nothing is wrong. I took him to the vet yesterday and they took an xray. Of course he didn't limp at all at the vets office. The vet feels he has an ACL injury and it might need surgery, but first they want to do another sedated xray to get a better look. Ruger has Pet Plan insurance so I'm not too concerned about the cost, but I just want to do what's best for Ruger. He's on doggie ibuprofen which seems to help, and he seems happy enough for now. Anybody been through this? Any thoughts? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Yes, I've been thru knee surgery 3x. If it is a tear, it has to be fixed. If it's just LP, then you weigh things a bit with your vet. Please keep us posted, poor Ruger!

| I suggest going to a orthopedic specialist. If it is an ACL then get the surgery!

| A torn CCL can be diagnosed without an xray. I suggest a board certified orthopedic surgeon. You can find one at: www.acvs.org

| Update on Ruger: Just brought Ruger back from the vet. They gave him a sedated exam and another x-ray. The vet claims he can't see anything definitive that would require surgery, so we're going to watch him and rest him for three weeks with doggie ibuprofen. The last three days he's been symptom free, I have been resting him, and I guess we'll see what happens. Currently he is a little groggy but just jumped up on the couch which he was having trouble doing. Also, I was given the opportunity to send his xrays off to a canine radiologist for further examination. I asked the vet what he would do and he said he seriously doubted a radiologist would see anything they aren't seeing. Right now it's all good. I'll post an update if anything changes, and thanks for the replies. |
