| Yorkie Limping - Vet found nothing - please help. Hello friends, I have a 2 year old 6 pound toy yorkie pup named Judas. Judas has 2 s**tzu playmates and is a very active boy. 2 days ago I went to the store and when I came back my Judas was limping and yelping and of course shaking. Of course I took my boy to the vet the following day and there was nothing swollen no signs of cuts or injury and his blood work came back perfect. They prescribed pain medicine that I have yet to give him as he doesn't react well to most mess. He is still very out of character being very passive. Not putting weight on his front right leg and is reluctant to jump. He seems a bit depressed over the whole thing and this is breaking my heart because I don't know what to do. The vet seems to think he may have a sprain and freaked himself out which can explain the temperament change. I can't stand to see my boy this way. When I examine and feel on him he does not react at all but he will limp and then yelp out of no where from time to time. And I'm unsure what to do or if this is something anyone else is familiar with. He has a follow up on Friday. Anyone experience this or know anything about what it could be. Also he is eating drinking and pitying just fine. And he powers through whatever pain to play ball and shows little to no limp when he is playing. |

| Did the vet x-ray the leg and foot? I would do x-rays to rule out broken bones that cannot be detected by physical exam. In the meantime, no jumping or running. Keep him quiet. Could be a sprain, and if it is, reducing strain will help prevent further injury.

| Hello, I wish I could help you out but I did want to ask how Judas is doing? You must be so very upset and the poor little pup is in pain and the vet did not know what is wrong. Did you take him back or talk to the vet to tell them what is still going on? I hope you find out and the poor boy gets better. I know nothing as to what this could be. I just hope your little boy gets well and has no more pain or misery. I did not see Maximo's post when I went to answer and she has great ideas for you and I am so glad she answered and knew these things. Let us know how it goes for Judas.,please.

| Hi, I am new to the forum, I joined to learn about Yorkie's as I am thinking of getting one from a rescue to be a pooch partner for my Aussie. As I was perusing the site I saw your post and it reminded me of my Aussie and an injury she had last year. This article helped me a lot and prepared me for the vet visit. https://www.vetary.com/dog/condition/front-leg-injury There is also a section at the bottom of the page where you can ask a vet a question for free, and get an opinion on what may be going on. Yorkie's have such tiny legs, couldn't a sprain or fracture be possible? |

| Agree with Maximo. If x-rays were not done, I would take him back to the vet and get it done. Also, you didn't say what meds were given, but it sounds like he does need something. Usually in a case of a suspected sprain an anti inflammatory is given such as Metacam or Rimadyl. Very important in helping to reduce discomfort and speed healing.

| If x-rays don't show an abnormality, it's likely a tear/sprain/strain soft tissue-type injury and it hurts, sometimes pretty badly depending upon what's the injury actually is. I'd give him his meds until he can successfully bear full weight on it again after his enforced rest period is over. Remember, dogs can feel pain & the only way they can tell us is by how they act. A shaking, uncertain-acting, quiet dog is probably one that is hurting and needs a break from the discomfort/pain. He feels vulnerable from his injury(dogs are genetically programmed to be stoic, not show pain/weakness if at all possible) and is holding back to protect himself and heal. It's okay for a dog to be drowsy from medication if injured so don't shy away if your vet prescribed it unless he vomits wildly, goes berserk or something drastic like that. I'd crate rest him, reassure him and allow him pain relief and time to heal and when he's not hurting & vulnerable, you'll likely see his former personality and full weight bearing return.
