| Yorkie with TCC acting scared and restless Good Day, I have registered here as a last resort to see if there is someone out there who have experienced the same as us and may have any advice for us, we are so hopelessly at a loss as a family at this stage! Our Mia was 12 years old last week Wednesday, also the day her test results came back positive for TCC (Bladder Cancer – Transitional Cell Carcinoma). It was devastating news. We do not have children; our four legged babies are our children. We had to say goodbye to our boy (a Chow-Chow) last month, he was 13 and could not walk without falling anymore, so this news now while we are not over grieving for him is overwhelming. The reason I took Mia to the vet was for the last three weeks or so, she has been acting weird for her. I am working from home, so I see her all day. She was lying on my lap while I was working and suddenly leapt up, starting to shiver and looked straight at the door, wanting to get off my lap to go and hide. She is a bit of a ‘scaredy cat’, so I didn’t think much about it at the time. Usually she is afraid of the garbage truck and goes and hide for a while if she hears it but this was not garbage day. The shivering and ‘scared acting’ only got worse from there-on and progressed so badly that we didn’t get any sleep during the nights. She does not want to leave my side and hides in the weirdest places like in closets and really tight spots. Outside though, she is quite fine but still goes and hides under bushes and dark spots. She also scratches quite violently for a while before getting to lie down. When she does eventually lie down, she will sit up frequently, with a scared look on her face, looking at the door or another specific spot. She seems depressed and sad, she won’t play and don’t ‘speak to us’ anymore. I try coaxing her into the house with snacks, she eats the snack but it doesn’t help the behaviour. She is eating normally and drinking enough water. The vet could not hear activity in her lungs, only heavy abdominal breathing and said that the likely cause of her anxiety is the inability to breathe. The x-rays they took showed the cancerous growths and the urine tests confirmed the diagnosis. It seems that it has spread to her lungs, therefore the difficulty breathing. The x-rays also showed an indented ribcage, which is worsening the breathing issue but her breathing is much improved with the medication she is on now (Antibiotics and Rimadyl). I have read a lot about TCC and can’t seem to find any indication that she is in pain other than the bladder infection that it may cause. Her behaviour is normal when we take her for her daily walk. What could cause this behaviour? We must leave her alone sometimes if we go out and she does have separation anxiety. I am so confused; is it pain or did something in the house really frighten her so much that she can’t get over it? Does she miss her brother, does she feel our distress? I don’t know how to help her! We see the vet on Friday again for the follow-up. Any advice would be greatly appreciated ♥ |

| I am very sorry that Mia has been diagnosed with cancer, and so soon after you lost your Chow Chow. Hiding, clinging, fear, and depression are often associated with illness and pain. Talk to your vet. Praying for Mia and you.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hello. So very sorry for your recent loss. And I'm also sorry to hear your little one is struggling. To me, it most def sounds like she is in some sort of physical pain...she is showing those signs.

| I am so sorry. I do think something is distressing her and it very well could be that she is uncomfortable. She also could be upset that her brother is gone. Maybe calling your vet would be helpful rather than waiting until Friday. Perhaps she needs a medication stronger than Rimadyl? I will keep you and Mia in my thoughts and prayers.

| Thank You Thank you for your thoughts! We have noticed that when we are not home (we take her everywhere with us now), she acts her normal friendly self but as soon as we are back home, she will start to act scared again. So we are rather convinced that something at home must have upset her at some time she was home alone. Her vet prescribed calming medication for her and she is doing much better since we started her on it. She will be on the calming meds for two months and a bit. She is also starting Metacam for the positive effect it may have on the cancer. We are hopeful! She's my whole life |
