| Diabetes I have an 8 year old 5lb Yorkie named Mollie. She was just recently diagnosed with diabetes a few months ago, she lost her vision shortly after. Her blood sugar was 469 so the Vet started her on 1 unit. I took her in for a Glucose check 3 weeks later, blood sugar was 432 Vet bumped her to 2 units. Another Glucose check a week later it was 363 vet bumped her to 3 units. Glucose check again a week later, blood sugar was 346, this time vet bumped her to 5 units. 5 days later she has a siezure Around 2 in the morning I woke up to her throwing up. I picked her up and she was limp, we rushed her to the Emergency vet, on the way she started siezing. They got her blood sugar stable , but the Emergency vet seemed to think the insulin was too much for her little body. 7:30 I had to go get her to take her to her regular vet. She started seizing again, my poor baby seized for an hour (in the lobby) before they finally seen her. They kept her all day and night. I got to pick her up the next morning. Vet brought her insulin back down to 2 units. She did good for about 3 days and decided she didnt want the W/D food anymore (she was hungry but refused the W/D) so I called her vet to tell them and ask if there was anything else I can give her or put in the food to make her eat it. They flat out said there was nothing and that's all she can eat. I didn't know what else to do so I blended a small amount of my other Yorki's can food with the W/D. I know I wasnt suppose to but she had to eat. She ate it and I gave her her insulin 30 minutes later. By 4 that afternoon her head was shaking and she was weak. I gave her some Karo which seemed to help for about 30 minutes. She then became wobbly and weak. We rushed her to the vet, where I was lectured because I put regular food with her W/D. She had to stay the night again, when I picked her the next morning the vet told me she wouldn't eat the W/D for them, so he gave her the I/D which she scarffed down. Needless to say he changed her food to I/D and she is loving it. It's been 4 days and (knock on wood) she has been doing good. Is there something I'm doing wrong to cause the siezure, and low blood sugar? I've done everything I was told to do. Or should I find a new vet? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I'm so sorry your little one is having so much trouble - how incredibly scary for you both ! I'd be so upset over all of this if it were me. Honestly, I really would seek another vet and/or an Internist to better manage the diabetes. There is something odd going on here that isn't allowing her to keep her levels stable and it's not making sense to me. Do you have a specialist vet hospital near you? Also, the vet is not making sense saying "w/d is the only food you can feed" - when in the next breath he's putting her on i/d - lol! Two totally different foods! Have you ever tried sprinkling Parmesan Cheese on her food, bc that can work great and adds barely anything of significance to their food...
