| Coughing and throwing up Hi everyone My 4 year old male, Bailey started coughing and throwing up night before last. We thought that maybe he just had an upset stomache as he seemed fine in the morning. He began doing it again around noon yesterday so we brought him to the vet. He was prescribed maloxican for an irritated throat. We gave him a dose at 4 pm yesterday and he seemed fine. Went to bed well and slept until approximately 4am this morning he started to cough and throw up again. Other than that he has no fever, is eating well, seems to have energy etc. this is why the vet thought that it was just his throat that was irritated possibly by something that he ate? She told us that if it doesn't stop the next step may be to sedate him and see if anything is stuck at the back of his throat. I am wanting to know if anyone has experienced this with their dog and if there is anything that I can do to help Bailey. I'm worried that he may have something more serious happening. We were told to try the Meds for 4 days but it's hard to see him like this! Thanks in advance for any advice. |

| Update: Bailey is still coughing. Called the vet and she said to wait until tomorrow to let the meds work. Also suggested that we run a hot shower and put him in the bathroom for awhile for the humidity. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | How is the kiddo this morning? Sometimes they do get something stuck back there and it triggers the vomiting reflex...

| I read a thread here recently where a Yorkie had something stuck in its throat and it wasn't diagnosed. Did not end happily. Have the vet check the throat all the way down to be sure there is not something causing this problem.

| Thank you for your responses. We called the vet again the day after Bailey started his meds. She told us to wait another day for the medication to work. He is still coughing, although not as bad but I'm worried that he may have something in his throat so today he will go back to the vet for sedation and and she will have a look. It's so hard to see him like this. I will try to update again this evening. Again, thank you for your concern everyone. Glenda |

| We are back from the vet with a cough suppressant. She checked in his throat without sedating him and is confident that there is nothing there. That and the fact that he is energetic, eating and not drooling at all makes her think that he may just have a very irritated throat from something he swallowed. She wants us to keep him on the anti-inflamitory as well as the cough suppressant for the weekend and will call on Monday to see how he is. Fingers crossed. |

| Update Bailey seems to be getting better. We have given him the cough suppressant and it is working so far. He has only coughed a couple of times since his first dose and slept through the night for the first time in a while. Fingers crossed that this will do the trick. Bailey does like to chew on a lot of stuff but rarely seems to eat anything, just likes to pack things around. We try to be very careful about leaving anything lying around as he will snatch it! |
