This was the second pregnancy for my girl Athena. There was only one pup that was born breach and did not survive. My concern is the teats on Athena. She has milk, but with no nursing puppy, is she in discomfort? I think the teats with milk are hardening. Any info is appreciated. Thank you in advance.

When I have been in a situation where momma has milk coming down and no baby to nurse, and the breasts are beginning to harden, it can get nasty for momma, as well as painful....I would contact your vet and see if she wants to start her on an antibiotic for a week, and I always do warm compresses at least 3 times a day....I just take a wet face towel, heat it in the microwave until it isvery warm....then I wrap it in a plastic bag to retain the heat.....I lay the warm compress on my left foreare, and stretch momma out stradeling my forearm over the compress, and let her lay there until the towel cools down.....they LOVE this, it feels so good to them, and of course, their momma is holding them and soothing them and mine doze off..... One one occasion when momma had a mastitis, I did the antibiotics as well as the warm compresses, and I massaged her breasts to help break up that hardening milk....

I am sorry you lost your little newborn...was there any evidence of what happened that caused the death?.

Dumb question, is it possible to collect some of the milk and freeze it for future use for an orphaned pup or something? Just hate that she lost a pup and the wholesome colostrum will go to waste. I know goat colostrum can be frozen (we used to freeze it in ice cube trays for 'single dose' use), I wonder why dog colostrum couldn't? Just a weird random thought - warning, I'm prone to those.

So sorry you lost your pup. I was hoping that if you could donate the milk/colostrum, it might ease the hurt a little.

You can also make a rice bag if you're good in sewing using 100% cotton fabric. Just make a case that looks like a pillow case whatever size you prefer put uncooked rice in there and sew it shut. You can microwave it for 2-3 mins and use a fleece fabric to cover over it and the warmth lasts for couple hours. I use that for my yorkie when it is cold at night.
