Yorkie Yakker | ![]() I am new to this forum. My 14 year old yorkie is named Trinket, and reaching a point where we have some difficult decisions to make: She has collapsing trachea, hip dysplasia, and several other problems related to age. She's the most mellow little girl you could imagine, except when the mailman comes. My husband and I are retired and on fixed income, so can't afford the surgeries that would be required for her conditions, plus at her age the vet thinks the surgery and recovery would be worse and more painful than her current condition, so we are taking things with her one day at a time. She is taking hydroxyzine, hydrocodone, tramadol, skin spray, eye drops, fish oil, and other things as needed. For all this, put some salmon in her dish, and she runs like a puppy to get it. Having a hard time thinking about what we might need to do. |

| ![]() When I was caring for my senior, Presley (he was 17 1/2 when he passed)...I was in your position. What should I do? How will I know. My vet said that if Presley is having more bad days than good then you will know. He declined very rapidly the week from Christmas to New Years. On January 6, we knew he was not going to have anymore good days and helped him cross the rainbow bridge. You know your baby. You've had her a long time. Its the toughest decision, but one you do out of love for them. Take it one day at a time. We know what you are going through...we are here for you when you need us...

Yorkie Yakker | ![]() Trinket is very cuddly these days. The CT is getting worse and choking episodes happening more often. Even though her rear legs sometimes collapse under her, she will work her way over to cuddle very tight against me at night. |

| ![]() Hi and welcome. I'm sorry your little girl isn't doing well. I understand what you're going through. I have a 14 year old too who isn't in very good health either. He's in kidney failure and has really bad arthritis. He's also on a bunch of different medications to keep him as comfortable as possible. He has good days and bad days and so far the good seem to outweigh the bad but I know that won't last forever. This is definitely the worst part of sharing our lives with these babies. Hopefully they both hang on for us for a while longer. ![]() |

Yorkie Yakker | ![]() Arthritis and luxating patella are two more of Trinket's problems that I didnt mention. She walks now with her back curved a little to the side. Such a hard time to go through for such active little dogs. ![]() Her appetite is off and on. |

Yorkie Yakker | ![]() We had to put Trinket to sleep this morning. I posted this under general discussion, but probably should have posted here since my original post about her collapsing trachea was here. Monday she had a honking cough all day. Though the hydrocodone eased it a little it kept coming back. Then last night nothing helped. She coughed and choked all night, even with additional medication. |

| ![]() I am so sorry you had to put Trinket to sleep. Remember you are a great parent and Trinket knew she had a wonderful home. Now she can be free of pain and running with my dear Keally . Just think of those wonderful memories everyday because Trinket will always be in your heart forever. Hugs to you. Susan |

| ![]() I am so sorry to hear Trinket has passed on, but it sounds like it was truly time to let her be free from her all her ailments. Sometimes that is the greatest gift we can give them, setting them free from pain and discomfort from a failing body.

| ![]() So sorry for the loss of lil Trinket, find peace in knowing you did all you could to keep her healthy and gave to her all your love. She is now pain free, the greatest but hardest gift to give, letting her go. We all have been there and know your pain and suffering. I will keep you in my prayers to help ease your pain.
