Found oozing hole and lump on chest 1 Attachment(s) I just found a wound on Deuce's chest. It's round about 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter with a hole in the center. The center looks like a hole. It looks like some pus with some blood. I've attached a picture. Looks like he was licking it. Any ideas what this may be? I certainly will take him to the vet in the morning. My poor boy. |
poor baby did he get bitten by something maybe |
Looks like an abscess to me. Abscesses in Dogs | petMD |
I wonder if it is a parasite that burrowed under his skin. |
Possibly a cyst, Quincy had one and it was hidden so well under the hair on his cheek I didn't even know it was there until I found that it had burst when grooming him after a bath. I cleaned it up and it healed up on it own. Could also be one of those sweat bumps that came to a head. (if that is possible). |

I also thought it looked like a fly larva. I saw one once at the vets office & it looked very similar. Please let us know what the vet says. |
I would think cuterebra. |
We have a 1:30 appt today. Will let you know later. |
Whatever it is, he definitely needs to be seen by a vet. I would never not go to the vet with something like that. So happy you have an appointment! |
Abscesses smell bad... cuterebra don't have an odor other than fresh blood, which is what that appears to be. It's important to get to the vet quickly bc if the dog scratches and injures the larvae or if it is broken when one tries to remove it, it will release toxins that will cause anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction). If there are rabbits in the yard, look for large, non-biting, black flies... if any of these are present, cuterebra is a good possibility. |
Hope Deuce is ok |
Thinking of Deuce and looking forward to your update. |
Poor thing, looks painful :( |
Bot fly? Quote:
There's no end to the things that come up with these dogs. I hope Deuce's problem is an easy fix. The photo looks like the bot fly thing my girl had. |
Well the vet thinks its the cuterebra. The hole is not large enough to extract the larvae and irrigate so we have to put him under tomorrow to remove it. I wonder if I used a country Vet if they would deal with this differently. I read you could try to smother it with vaseline and it will come out on it's own. While he's out they will clean his teeth since his left side needs the work. If you remember two years ago Deuce had an abcess on a tooth that showed up on his cheek that the vet was stumped about. I had to take him to an oral surgeon to get the job done. He ended up with an extraction and a few more extractions to open up his bite since his teeth were so crammed. Well anyway the vets were a bit surprised that he got this since he is obviously a well cared for little boy that does not spend very much time in the great outdoors. Guess were were just the lucky ones. He is not uncomfortable but I will take him tomorrow morning and get this taken care of. I hate to leave him there. He is never in a cage. I know he will be so needy when I bring him home. My little boy!!!!! But by morning he will be himself. I will keep you posted. Damn fly larvae!!!! |
Poor Deuce! I hope he will be ok! Sachi sends her love! |
Sorry to hear Deuce has to go under. He is obviously a very well-cared for boy. All it takes is a minute for these crazy flies to do their thing. Another war story for him to tell his friends. Sending best wishes for all to go well tomorrow. Looking forward to hearing he is back home. Max and Teddy send their best too. :animal-pa |
Prayers for Deuce for tomorrow... I hate that vets have to make a suggestion that the dog is not well cared for... these flies target rabbits and lay their eggs near the rabbit runs or on anything close to a rabbit in size or color. Rabbits used to shelter under our shed. One year there was a million of them all over the place. Flies too. That's when my Peek got this. Maybe they see it more in dogs left outside for longer periods of time, but it only takes a second for a dog to come down with a cuterebra. I had left Peek and my GSD outside while I was doing yardwork, they laid down together behind the shed in the shade. When I walked past, I looked and thought Peek was dead.... he was covered with large black flies. I ran over to him and shooed the flies off him.... he was sound asleep. I thought the flies would be biting him, but not, they laid their eggs on him. Gave him a bath immediately but I must have left an egg on him. The dogs were laying only 3 feet apart... odd not one fly was on the GSD. Two weeks later he had the same type wound on him like Deuce has. I got the larvae out (wrong thing to do!) and took it and Peek to the vet. The vet IDed it as a cuterebra and sent us home, no ABs or anything. the wound healed up completely in 3 days. Edit to add: People can get these also. |
Prayers for Deuce....I am sure all will go well tomorrow. |
Poor baby!!! |

Thank goodness I dont have issues with those flies here, but, I do not think a pup with this thing buried in it's skin, can be blamed on uncared for pets....I know those flies can be common around barns, stock yards, etc.....I am glad you got it diagnosed and it will be taken care of! Poor little Deuce! |
I hope he is better soon |
Dropped the boy off this morning. Of course he thought it was a social call . . . until he saw the tech come out for him. Thanks all for the additional war stories. I didn't know people can get them too!!!!! Uggghhhh! I"m thinking I may need to get him a collar to use temporarily since his harness rubs right over the wound area. I never used a collar on him. |
sending many well wishes for a safe procedure. |
Been away for a while here, but just read the post about your poor Deuce. Good thing that you found it quickly! Sounds like Deuce is in good hands and will be soon in you TLC:) If Deuce is anything like my Bailey, he'll be lapping up all the love you are going to be showering on him even more so now. All the best in the recovery phase! Sending positive thoughts your way. |
Yikes! Poor little boy. I am glad you are getting it out. I wonder if we have those where I am from? Yuck :p At least you saw it and are getting it out quickly! He will be home before you know it :) |

If he isn't a puller, you should be safe using a collar temporarily. The first time I heard of this was on a Discovery show. A woman had one removed from her head. She was very funny, laughing and joking as the doctor removed the larvae. The worst part for her was that she had to shave half her head. |
Awww poor Deuce. I guess it's all over by now and sweet little Deuce will be back home soon. I HATE burrowing and biting bugs! |
