There's no end to the things that come up with these dogs. I hope Deuce's problem is an easy fix. The photo looks like the bot fly thing my girl had.

| ![]() Well the vet thinks its the cuterebra. The hole is not large enough to extract the larvae and irrigate so we have to put him under tomorrow to remove it. I wonder if I used a country Vet if they would deal with this differently. I read you could try to smother it with vaseline and it will come out on it's own. While he's out they will clean his teeth since his left side needs the work. If you remember two years ago Deuce had an abcess on a tooth that showed up on his cheek that the vet was stumped about. I had to take him to an oral surgeon to get the job done. He ended up with an extraction and a few more extractions to open up his bite since his teeth were so crammed. Well anyway the vets were a bit surprised that he got this since he is obviously a well cared for little boy that does not spend very much time in the great outdoors. Guess were were just the lucky ones. He is not uncomfortable but I will take him tomorrow morning and get this taken care of. I hate to leave him there. He is never in a cage. I know he will be so needy when I bring him home. My little boy!!!!! But by morning he will be himself. I will keep you posted. Damn fly larvae!!!!

| ![]() Sorry to hear Deuce has to go under. He is obviously a very well-cared for boy. All it takes is a minute for these crazy flies to do their thing. Another war story for him to tell his friends. Sending best wishes for all to go well tomorrow. Looking forward to hearing he is back home. Max and Teddy send their best too. ![]()

| ![]() Prayers for Deuce for tomorrow... I hate that vets have to make a suggestion that the dog is not well cared for... these flies target rabbits and lay their eggs near the rabbit runs or on anything close to a rabbit in size or color. Rabbits used to shelter under our shed. One year there was a million of them all over the place. Flies too. That's when my Peek got this. Maybe they see it more in dogs left outside for longer periods of time, but it only takes a second for a dog to come down with a cuterebra. I had left Peek and my GSD outside while I was doing yardwork, they laid down together behind the shed in the shade. When I walked past, I looked and thought Peek was dead.... he was covered with large black flies. I ran over to him and shooed the flies off him.... he was sound asleep. I thought the flies would be biting him, but not, they laid their eggs on him. Gave him a bath immediately but I must have left an egg on him. The dogs were laying only 3 feet apart... odd not one fly was on the GSD. Two weeks later he had the same type wound on him like Deuce has. I got the larvae out (wrong thing to do!) and took it and Peek to the vet. The vet IDed it as a cuterebra and sent us home, no ABs or anything. the wound healed up completely in 3 days. Edit to add: People can get these also.

Thank goodness I dont have issues with those flies here, but, I do not think a pup with this thing buried in it's skin, can be blamed on uncared for pets....I know those flies can be common around barns, stock yards, etc.....I am glad you got it diagnosed and it will be taken care of! | ![]() Dropped the boy off this morning. Of course he thought it was a social call . . . until he saw the tech come out for him. Thanks all for the additional war stories. I didn't know people can get them too!!!!! Uggghhhh! I"m thinking I may need to get him a collar to use temporarily since his harness rubs right over the wound area. I never used a collar on him.

![]() If he isn't a puller, you should be safe using a collar temporarily. The first time I heard of this was on a Discovery show. A woman had one removed from her head. She was very funny, laughing and joking as the doctor removed the larvae. The worst part for her was that she had to shave half her head.
