| Protein-Losing Enteropathy. My Yorkie was taken really I'll last week, she was admitted to the vets on Tuesday and has come home today (Sunday) she was really poorly and the vet wanted on two occasions to put her to sleep however we could allow that to happen. The vet had so many diagnosis', however he now thinks it is Protein-Losing Enteropathy. I've read that with the right drugs and diet dogs can live a happy life with this condition. Any advice at all on this condition would be really appreciated also any diet help would be great. Her tummy is still really swollen however she is eating and drinking again and is a lot more active than she was a week ago. Thanks in advance. |

| Yes they can do well with the right treatment. There are a few members with dogs with PLE on here that are doing well, hopefully they will see this and can offer you more specific advice. Praying for your little one.

| I can only offer you my prayers. YT member LadyJane, who is a hero to countless rescue dogs, offered her advice and experiences with PLE. I hope you find help for your baby. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...teropathy.html

| Thank you. I will take a look at the links lady Jayne offered in the post. Will also look at other users comments. She seems to have got over the worst few days it's just a case of maintaining her health now, and getting her stomoch to reduce. Thanks again. |

| Protein Losing Enteropathy can be a devastating illness, but sometimes it can be managed. What meds is your pup on and what diet? Those are the key things in treatment. Here is a thread about my Cookie. I am happy to say that she is still doing very well and she was diagnosed in Dec. 2011. I hope you will have the same good results... Feel free to message me if you have any concerns and want someone to talk with. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ia-update.html

| Ladyjane Thanks so much for your response. Bonnie is 2 years old and is coming to the end of her perscription which is the first time she's ever been on the drugs for her condition. The meds she's on are Omeprazole 10mg capsules once daily, Marbocyl 20 mg once daily, and prednidale 5mg once daily, the diet the vet has given to us is Virbac digestive vet complex? However I think this may be one of very few cases the vet has come across so vast experience in this condition was not their forte? Can you please advise if you feel this is the right diet? And meds she should be on? Her tummy is still really bloated, however she is now eating, drinking passing stools and urine, and her little personality is slowly coming back so they surely are signs of improvement? The vets advise her protein levels are up by a third and her bloods are slowly stabilising, she barked at the door for the first time in over a week today :-) We only rescued Bonnie 6 months ago from a puppy farm where she had no quality of life and had had 2 litters of her own, so for her to be unwell now is upsetting as she hasn't had the life she deserves. Thanks for all your help. |

It sounds like your vet is covering all bases, but I would not think Bonnie should be taken off meds so soon. Are you supposed to be seeing the vet again now that the prescriptions are at an end? If you have questions about the care given, you could see a specialist...I just found this website: Veterinary Internal Medicine Clinical Referrals | Queen Mother Hospital for Animals, RVC It is good that she is eating. Often these pups are not diagnosed until they are very, very sick. I hope that Bonnie will continue to do well. Please keep us posted on her progress.

| Lady jane thanks so much for your information! Sorry for the very late response. Bonnie seemed to of pulled through until yesterday when she started with the exact same symptoms as last time. She's vomited heavily through the night, and passed a lot of blood. she seems to overnight lost all of the weight she had gained. I'm out of options we have tried so many diets, the meds from the vets, I'm wondering if it is PLE she has and the vet has misdiagnosed? Her stomoch constantly makes rumbling noises as if she's full of gas (even after being fed). My question is? Do I feed her now? Or wait until tomorrow incase it's a bug? I don't want to feed her and her have to strain with vomiting again? Thanks all. |

| Has your vet made any suggestions? I would either go with the vet or do a consult with a vet nutritionist. The key to doing well with this illness is diet and it is not something I would trust lay people to advise me on.

| Lady jane, the vet has made a couple of suggestions which we have gone with however Bonnie is a very very fussy eater and doesn't like the two foods offered. I've had suggested by somebody else whose dog has PLE purina HA so I think that may be my next try. |

I home cook for Cookie .. but to do that you need to know exact amounts and you also must use supplements. Cookie's main diet is sweet potatoes and tilapia. You could try to feed her that and THEN do a consult with a vet nutritionist. You could get a balanced diet from www.balanceit.com .. you would just need an ok from your vet. Again, I must stress how important her diet is.
