My dog has IVDD (back), but I am very careful with him at all times. He has never had a case of a ruptured disk and is taken straight to his vet at any sign of pain (yelping).

He uses stairs (stacked pillows) to get up and down off the bed. He is never allowed to jump off furniture and is always carried up and down any staircase.

He has been treated twice within the past 12 months for very mild relapses. His vet examined him and tested for pain. He was then xrayed. He was given a shot of Dexamethasone and B-12. He was sent home with a course of more Dex (very low dosage), Carafate for stomach protection, antibiotics, and Brain/Nerve Support formula tablets by Animal Nutrition Technologies.

His vet requires that Beanie avoid any running or jumping particularly during recovery. Crate rest is normally recommended.

He continues to take a daily maintenance dose of his Brain/Nerve Support tablets and is doing great.

I forgot to add one more thing...

Beanie also gets cold laser treatments after diagnosis and during recovery. Those seem to work very, very well. They are very affordable too.

How is Sammy?

Ellie was diagnosed with IVDD three years ago. She has had many relapses because after crate rest .i have opted to let her be a dog (on a small scale) and not restrict all activity. We had one very close call this year where she dud end up with a neuro deficit. In a healthy dog surgery is usually an option if it gets bad enough.

Ellie takes one or all of:
Prednisone OR Metacam (usually pred)
Tramadol (massive dose)
Gabapentin
Methocarbamol

The Tramadol is swapped for a Bupi injection if indicated.

He went back today for his week recheck and everything was good.
