He smiles at people all the time...hard to get a photo of it. If he is staring at someone and they smile, he smiles back. That photo is fuzzy, but I love it.
He is a total character!

Poor Timmy has had stones twice in a short time...this makes the third. I cannot help but wonder if this one was somehow overlooked when he had surgery recently; but I will never know for sure. The day started out very normal. I was taking Timmy and Lovey for their follow up appointments with the specialists. Hers was for her ortho surgery. His was with the vet nutritionist. The tech took Timmy to the back for vital signs to be checked and for the vet to see him. They then came back to the room and Dr. Lenox asked if Timmy had been dribbling urine lately (he had not). I had noticed after he went back that there was some urine on the blanket in the stroller but I did not know who had done it. It struck me as odd but not something that really concerned me until she asked about him dribbling. She said he had done it twice in the few minutes she had him in the back and she felt he needed an ultrasound to check for stones and they would also do a cysto so they could culture his urine. Next thing I know they came out asking if they could put a catheter in because they were not sure if he had sediment in his urethra or if there was a prostrate issue. When they passed the catheter they found that there had been a stone in the urethra. Poor little Timmy.

They recommended a scrotal urethrostomy. I have heard of them, but have never had a pup that needed one. So, here we go with another new thing. Never ending in this house I swear.

The surgeon called late this afternoon and said that Timmy did well. He will be there for two days. It is important that they be kept quiet. There is a lot of blood in that area, so they must be watched carefully for bleeding. Then when he is discharged he must wear an E-collar for two weeks...she said that is a MUST. She sends them home with two, one soft and one hard collar. She said that the hard collar will prevent the licking but the soft is better because it won't poke at the site. I looked at pictures of these things and shuddered. I feel so badly for this poor boy.

After this, he is now going to have yet another diet formulated by the nutritionist. I have to say I am ultra impressed with her! She was right on top of this ... clearly she is a good vet in addition to being a nutritionist!

So sorry your little guy had to have this nasty operation. I know because Lil Beau Jangles had to have the same thing because of a bladder stone. That was five months ago and he is the picture of health now. Strong body and total energy at 5 lbs. My vet put him on a urinary special diet right after surgery and feed him only that while he stayed in ER. Lucky he liked the Science Diet Canine C/D canned chicken with veg. and thrived well on it. He now eats the dry also. His new little opening has healed now and he has great control of his bladder. I will post more latter, I'm at work now and have to close up. Soooooooo thankful I found you......YEA.

I was horrified by the thought of the surgery, but in Timmy's case it has been a miracle. No matter what we did with his diet, he kept making more stones. None since!!! So glad your baby has done well!

My little Beau Jangles had this same ER surgery - same problem - Jan 2015.....he was just 11 mo old. 4 lbs. I have him on a special unitary diet canned food. He seems to be doing fine. His little slit new opening in his scrotal area looks healed, but still red on inside. Worries me. He hold his urine pretty well now, but I think he has to tee tee more often. I watch him pretty close and make sure he goes outside as soon as he gets up from a nap. He is a strong muscle lil body and runs after birds and squirrels for exercise. I still have no answer for why bladder stone at such a young age ??????

Some pups are just prone to making calcium oxylate stones (assuming that is what he had??)

Timmy's area looked the same for a while, but now, it is just a slit...I don't see the red part anymore. He does tend to have issues with the urine touching his skin, so I have to wipe the area frequently.

Thank you...he is quite the charmer. The difference in him from when he came to me until now is amazing. I remember being so afraid for him having those surgeries and now, it's like it never happened.
