My Me-Me is in ICU with Histoplasmosis in her bood stream
 
My Me-Me is at UT Vet Medical Hospital with Histoplasmosis in her blood stream. They are giving her anti fungal meds to kill it off. I went last night thinking it was saying goodbye to her since they are finding it everywhere. With her weighing only 2 pounds 14 ounces, it is taking longer getting her dose up without killing her. Me-Me is 9 years old. She looked better than I expected and I am now hopeful that she will be home. I have researched it and found out that this is prevalent in the southern states. It does come from birds and bats, but is in the soil all over. It attacks mostly animals with low immune systems. Me-Me was born with a low immune system and had been on steroids for a long period. She needs lots of prayers.

How awful for such a sweet baby to be facing such an awful illness. The tiny ones don't have much to fight with but their will it seems at times. So glad she's in great vet hands and being well-cared for and observed constantly, supported. I'll be praying that her vets can get her through this and get her back home soon.

How do the vets think she caught this or got infected to start with?

I am so sorry your pup is so ill. I hope she will respond to the meds...she is certainly in a wonderful place where she will received great care!

I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep us posted. We have a member whose pup had histoplasmosis and she recovered. You might want to read this thread about it...it is a bit long and goes off topic, but it is a good read:

Thank you. I needed to hear one survived this. The vet said this is the first time she has seen it in the blood, only read about it. I needed hope that one got better. The vet said they had one two weeks ago. It was in the lungs. When they gave her the meds her lungs became so inflamed that she died. They donated the meds to the hospital so Me-Me had them right away.

Lola had it in her intestines, not her blood; but the bottom line is that they can recover from it. Praying for your baby...

They think that since her immune system has always been on the low side, that she was at risk. I the southern states it is in the dirt even. All she had to do is dig around in it and breath the spores in. Dogs with healthy immune systems can get it, but not this severe. This is one of the first cases this vet has seen. I was told we can bring in in on our shoes, firewood and even dirt for our house plants. Me-Me doesn't have any of the side effects of this disease but anemia. They are still watching her almumin levels. When she was admitted she was .5,the lowest they had ever seen. She is at 1.5 after plasma transfusion. I have such a loving husband. He has told them to do everything they have to help her.

That's great that her albumin came up like that. I have a pup who has a protein losing condition (lymphangectasia). She was diagnosed in Dec. 2011 and is thriving. At the time, I really did not think I would have her through Christmas...so never, ever give up hope until there are no options left. That's great that your husband is so supportive!

Oh, I totally get that. haha pretty funny.....

I honestly could not think of a better way to spend my money than to save my pups. I believe in doing everything possible .. there are so many ways you can gather money together.

We just paid off our credit card bill....now it is for Me-Me. She is worth every penny.

Hopefully she'll be feeling better when you visit her. Taking a tee-shirt or small article of clothing you've worn and not washed that you can leave with her with your strong scent on it will be a comforting connection to you and all you represent to her while she's fighting her battle. Even if you have to cut the sleeve off a treasured shirt or something like that to create a non-bulky item to leave in her crate can give her that connection and hope of seeing you again. Praying your little one is better day by day until she's completely well again.

This is excellent and you would not believe the importance and the positive impact it has on these sick babies, knowing momma is near....They will lay on a blanket in their cage, and if there is even a small piece of material that has your scent on it, very often, they will seek that out and rest their head on that piece....

As soon as you mentioned MeMe, I thought of the pup in this thread and how her mom fought to save her. I will pray for your baby to get better.

Sadly my Me-Me had to pass this morning. The disease was too bad. I take comfort in that they have been studying her and her autopsy will help save the next pup. She was the first case of it in her blood stream.

I am soo sooo very sorry for your loss of Me-Me. May she run and play at rainbow bridge. Sending many prayers to you and your family at this difficult time. RIP Me-Me your family did so much to try and save you and let's hope in the future you help save another baby!!

I am sooo sorry for the loss of your Me Me. That fact that you did all that was humanly possible for her should help take the edge off your pain, but I know that won't be possible for a while.

I am so sorry to read of the passing of your dear Me-Me. You did the best you could for her and she knew she was loved. Hopefully her autopsy will help figure out a better treatment for future dogs. She will be waiting to give you a welcome kiss when you meet again. R.I.P. Me-Me the newest Yorkie angel.
