I am very sorry for your loss. You are wonderful to think of helping other pups who may suffer this terrible condition.

Just as reference for others, this fungus is picked up from bird droppings and bat guano.

The primary cause of this infection is the ingestion of the Histoplasma capsulatum fungus. The fungus may be inhaled when contaminated soil is disturbed, such as what happens when dogs scratch or dig in the dirt, or through contact with contaminated bird droppings, including that from poultry, and bat droppings.

I'm so sorry to hear of Me-Me's passing. How very sad and heartbreaking. Praying for you and your DH during this tragic time. RIP Me-Me, Little Angel.

My Me-Me wasn't going outside with the cold. The vet told me that she picked it up through spores in the air because her immune system was low. The form that she contracted was in her blood stream which the vets at the UT top Vet hospital only found in a text book. This is why they are studying her. She can now help save the next one that contracts it.
The type that is contracted through the intestines and even lungs can be cured. I always watch what my yorkies eat that's why this was such a mystery. It took specialists to find it in her blood. They type she contracted was fatal within two weeks even with blood transfusions and anti-fungal meds. She tolerated the anti-fungal meds...they couldn't stop it from ravaging her tiny body though.
Good advice MichelleM...except it wouldn't have helped Me-Me.

This is good advice Michelle...except Me-Me didn't get it that way. Her immune system was low and the spores in the air infected her blood. She was a very rare case.
These spores are everywhere. We can bring them in on us even. Only pets with low immune systems are at risk for this type as it is really rare.

This is incorrect. the danger for most is inhaling the spores. Humans also get it in their lungs from inhaling it. You can get it from firewood that birds have nested in when you cut it. It is in organic rict soil and air-born also. The hospital sees at least two pets a month with it. Mine don't go outside in the cold. If your pet has a low immune system it is at risk. Luckily for the others, MeMe's case is so rare that they are studying her to save others. You won't find any information on this in the blood...maybe after Me-Me's case is in print.

Just seeing this and finding out you've lost your baby MeMe. I'm so sorry she's gone and you are in such pain. I'd never heard of this disease before you posted about it so I know it helps others and their dogs. You did a courageous thing to tell all about this and how it bad it can turn. I'm devastated for you and know MeMe was beloved and will be missed all your life.
