| Gastroenteritis Can you help us?? I took Kiki to the vet on Wednesday we were told she has gastroenteritis. (She has two rounds of vomiting and one soft stool and one diarrhea before we went to the vet. She tends to have a super sensitive stomach so vomit is not out of the ordinary for her. ) She was given a shot to settle her tummy. GI mix(looks like pep to) and Cerenia. She has thrown up since Tuesday but had diarrhea Thursday night. Friday she seemed to feel pretty good and ate really good but in small portions. Each meal I always offered a small amount of kibble with either cottage cheese or boiled chicken and rice. Friday night she ate kobble instead of chicken. I was proud and thought we are on the road to recovery. Saturday she refused to eat anything but drank a small amount of water ,she played a little. She got up about 5 am for a drink but threw it up. Not unusual she drinks fast. She still won't eat I don't know what to do. She has not pooped since Thursday night but ate Friday.

| Keep your vet informed and check about her diet. Most dogs with GI issues/events are on a special diet or chicken/rice for at least one week or until symptoms disappear. When they're not improving, they may need to do more testing or change meds. If you feel your vet isn't interested or doing enough, I'd seek a 2nd opinion with a different vet.

| He told me about a week but should she have stopped eating and having BM. I don't know if the GI mix treats constipation if that is even the problem.

Stopping eating would worry me, I would be calling the vet to let him know and get further instructions from him as to how to proceed.

| She ate a good breakfast chicken covered in broth. She even ate lunch and dinner but still no BM. My regular vet wasn't on call but I spoke to the vet I like the least after breakfast and he suggested I call for a follow up in the am if no BM by then. I even called the emergency vet in the next city to get a second opinion. She still doesn't feel like herself but I feel sure she has been getting enough fluids & food with theeexception of food yesterday.

| Glad she's eating! A BM will come although it may take a few days, figuring she did have the diarrhea and then missed some meals. It takes time for their bodies to recover from tummy issues... important to keep her diet bland and make sure she's getting plenty of fluids, fresh water and broth or water can be added to her food. Dehydration alone can make them stop eating. IMHO, I wouldn't worry about treating her for constipation just yet... too many drugs/remedies in their system can slow things down.

| I think you are right. I called the vet this morning and they told me to give her time. That she has been sick and as long as she is not in pain or seem to be feeling bad just to watch her. She is feeling better everyday. Today is her 2nd birthday!

| I Hope This Helps I am submitting this to you in the event that these bouts start to reoccur. They generally take a week or two to subside but can worsen in time. I have a soon to be 7 year old Yorkie named Mischa. Previously I owned a male Yorkie who has passed. My male Yorkie, Miles, did not have any intestinal problems. Mischa, however, is a different story. She has had gastrointestinal issues since she was one year old. The symptoms, somewhat common in this breed, should be evaluated to find a possible trigger or root cause. These symptoms can include, vomiting, loose stool, diarrhea, refusal to eat or drink, excessive drinking, constant sleeping, lethargy, blood in stool, bleeding from rectum. We have made many trips to our very competent vet as well as several to a veterinary emergency hospital for specialized treatment. These bouts would occur once or twice a year. It breaks your heart. The diagnoses over the first years were food allergy, gastroenteritis and possible pancreatitis. The last bout which took place in December 2013 was the most serious so far and more extensive testing was conducted by specialists at the veterinary hospital where she was admitted for three days. The final diagnosis was inflammatory bowel disease, IBD (common to Yorkies) this resulted in the bleeding and triggered pancreatitis or vice-versa. Testing over the years included specialized blood tests, stool analysis, ultrasound, endoscopy and biopsy. Treatment during recovery at the vet's office or in the hospital is too lengthy to post here but diet is very very important. Mischa has been on a veterinary diet for years and will continue a veterinary guided diet of very low fat food. Currently, Royal Canin Hypoallergenic PV(venison and potato). Preventive meds are famotidine (pepsid) and prednisone. Regular checkups and blood-work to track certain levels is also very important. Mischa is fine now but the bouts may return. With proper treatment and diet they should be much lower in intensity and more easily controlled. There you have it. Hopefully, this was a one-time thing for Kiki. However, should it return in the future, you are now better armed to identify symptoms and have more in depth discussions with your vet. |

Yorkie Yakker | Hello my Twinkle had the same GI issues, almost everything gave her the runs for her first two years. Then a breeder suggested acidophilus lactobacillus. I buy the capsules and sprinkle very little to mix in with breakfast every morning and have not had issue since. This may not work for everyone but it definitely worked for her..it's worth the try. I believe it comes in flavors also but unsure...I buy mine from the local Walmart..good luck! |

| Thank you very much- I pray it is a one time thing she is our baby and someone has been staying with her since this started I couldn't stand leaving her sick. Do you give Mischa treats? I'm gathering info & recipes to make our own.

| Kiki also had a BM this morning! She wandered off in the spare bedroom to do it and couldn't quite understand why we were cheering that she didn't use her pad. They are so funny and she knows right from wrong and all you have to do is say her name. I'm just glad she is eating & feeling better - it is just materials things I can't replace Kiki!
