| Help with severe allergies / skin issues Hello, I have been a yorkie owner for about 13 yrs. I recently lost my oldest yorkie, Hudson to cancer last year. I have a dilemna that I have been fighting for years and I'm at my wits end. My other yorkie, Harley who is 10 yrs old has had allergies & skin issues for many years. We live in FL so I was hoping since the weather is getting cooler, he might improve. He has actually gotten worse. We have tried everything over the years. Allergy testing, allergy shots, several shampoos, changing food, and now he is on a Atopica (been on it before but desperate) He is on flea and tick medication and Heartworm prevention also. He constantly scratches, smells terrible, is greasy and is altogether miserable. He often develops staph infections from the skin problems. Our vet has been okay but they have said there is nothing else they can do. Just give him prednisone and antibiotics. He has been to an allergy specialist in the past and that is when they did the testing and the shots did not really help either. Our vet says they have seen one other case that is worse than Harley. The owner moved to Oregon and he called them and said that his dog's skin is completely fine. It has been for three years now. Harley's quality of life is terrible. 😰 What to do? |

| Welcome to YT! I think you would do better if you posted this in either Sick & Injured or Health and Diet forum. I will send a message to see if this post of yours can just be moved. Or...you can just start a new one. Allergies can be frustrating to deal with. You will get a lot of good feedback on this topic in one of the above forums!

| Thank you for your response! I just talked to my vet and he was tested for thyroid in 7/12 with a .5. He was on prednisone at the time so the vet did not take it any further saying that steroids will effect the thyroid levels. He does not have the other symptoms like weight gain, no energy or hair loss but I still may look into that. Can't hurt. As far as Cushing's, she said that is a lengthy test (8 hours)? so I think I will start with the thyroid and go from there. |

- you first do a very simple urine test called the Creatinine Cortisol Ratio Urine test -- this test is NOT conclusive. But, it is helpful in telling you whether you need to test FURTHER for Cushings. You want to do this first bc Cushings testing is more expensive and is more complicated - so you first test to see if you even need to go there. - if the above test points to further testing, you then get the ACTH test done; it does not take 8 hours. Rather, you drop off your dog for about 4 hours.
