Bentley is leaking blood from his butt :( He vomited last night, and there was some hair of mine in the vomit. I thought it was the hair that made him throw up. But tonight I come from work and theres vomit and diarrhea in like 6 different places and blood on his pee pad. Then I saw him trying to go potty but blood was what it came out and it was broght and red. I run to the emergency room, they dont know what it is but they wanted to run some tests and they wanted to charge me $1,200 for blood test, x ray etc etc... I declined and told them I would rather take him to the vet in the morning, but he got IV fluid becaus he hasnt been drinking water. I'm taking him tomorrow to the vet :-/ Am I doing things right, I'm a wreck right now and cant stop crying ... What could this be? Liver shunts? A parasite? Do I get insurance tomorrow before taking him to the Vet? My friend says get a plcn from Banfield at Petsmart so they can cover the exams Omg has anyone been through this? Help! :( |
You need to take him back to the er vet he could go down hill before the morning. |
I agree, back to the ER ASAP. This could Parvo. |
Any dog that is bleeding needs to have lab work done. You could ask the emergency clinic to at least do a CBC and ask their opinion about how he might do through the night. If he has HGE, he could die at home tonight. Bleeding is serious. Here is a link about HGE: Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis in Dogs | VCA Animal Hospitals Perhaps you can apply for Care Credit...IF he has HGE, the treatment is not cheap. You really need to think of a way to get some money together if he needs hospitalization. BUT for now...find out what it is!! No, I would not suggest you get insurance first. It won't cover anything that happens that same day. And forget Banfield...they have a wellness plan where they push a lot of vaccines that are not needed. For sick care they are horribly expensive. My opinion: Go back to the EC and have them do a CBC .. at the very least! You could ask them to whittle the bill down and do the most important things! |
Is this just a couple drops of blood or large amounts? It is too late to get insurance for this issue because it is now preexisting. Please don't get hooked into Banfield. There is a long list of possibilities. The ER vet is right on blood and xrays. However, $1200 for a small blood panel and two xray views is crazy. Did they break down the estimate for you and offer to do one thing at a time? Since we don't know what it is, waiting isn't good. Sid the vet give you an idea of how he looked physically, etc.? |
ETA: Leaking blood?? Leaking means blood needs to be done tonight. as Linda said HGE is possible. I've seen this at the ER before. It was related to a serious toxin in that case. Go back to the ER please. Apply for CareCredit. Have them do one test at a time. |
Go back to the ER vet...this doesn't sound good at all. |
Ok I'm going to take him to the ER again :( |
Can you call your regular vet, does your vet have an after hours emergency number? This happened to Winston after hours once, I called my vet who agreed to meet me at her office. No emergency cost, she was able to treat him right then and there. If you are not able to do this, please go back to the ER. Bleeding from the rectum is never normal and can be quite serious. Hoping and praying your little one will be alright. |

My Sapphire ate hair, which she pooped out the next day. Looked like a cat hairball... I was curious and decided to cut it open which was almost impossible to do, but inside all that hair were some undigested coconut chips. I'm sure these could have caused bleeding had she not eaten the hair (her own she pulled out) that had wrapped around the offending chips and protected her intestines. Just saying I agree with the other members, this could be very serious, and please do get an xray to rule out a blockage.... Best of luck, praying for you both... |
So sorry about little Bentley. Will be praying for him that he will get well and be fine. |
Thanks everyone for your advice. He's in the ER right now. Parvo test came back negative thank god. And theyre going to call me in about an hour with blood and xrays results. It was a LOT of blood coming out of his butt. No my vet doesnt have any after hours, theyre the ones who recommended this 24 hour hospital in case of an emergency after 7pm Sorry for not quoting anyone, I'm exhausted... What a terrible day. |
So sorry to hear Bentley is sick, but it is really good that he is back with the vets. Can you think of anything toxic he might have gotten into? Do you have any mouse or rat poison like Decon anywhere in your house/garage or yard? Is there anything around he has chewed up that might be sharp like plastic or glass that might have perforated his intestine? Just guessing at things you might look for as the vet is checking him out. I'm praying that he will be ok, and hope for updates tomorrow. |
Keeping Bentley in my thoughts & prayers.... Hope that he is going to be OK. Keep us posted. |

Theyre going to keep looking for causes, I'm going to call my vet in the morning to see what she thinks about all this. |
Theyre transferring him to another part of the hospital (I forget the name) so they can keep looking for a cause, and theyre going to call me in the morning. I'm going to call my vet in the morning and talk to her about all this. |
I'm glad you took him. I hope they have answers for you this morning. |
Sending prayers he feels better very soon. Poor little guy |
Sending out prayers for Bentley. I hope you can get some answers and that he is feeling better soon. |
I am so happy that you took him back. Prayers for Bentley...hope he is doing better this morning. |
Praying everything turns out ok. How scary! |
Praying everything turns out good for your little Bentley!! |
Thinking of you & Bentley and hoping he is better soon |
So they can't find anything wrong with him. They're going to call me in a little bit to ask me if I want to proceed with more evaluation. ... Already had xrays, blood tests, ... I think theyre waiting for a stool for a fecal exam. So what do I do? I tried calling my regular vet but shes not working today, but another vet is going to call me later. What do you guys recommend. I paid $1,400 for all these exams and they cant find anything. I'm not sure what the "further analysis" actually is, theyre going to call me later. I think she mentioned an ultrasound :-/ |
dog Is he showing signs of improvement? Is he eating? More blood? He may have gotten into something and hopefully it will pass. Sometimes just observation is the best-wait and see if he gets better before proceeding with more tests. If the x-ray showed nothing in his system, he has stopped vomiting I would use a bland diet and wait and see. See what the vet says. I am praying he will be fine. |
dog All of us need to be careful with any kind of bones ,treats we give our dogs. Those rawhide bones, greenies, and other chewies are dangerous. If they break off a piece it could get lodged. I always watch when mine chew a CET chew, the minute it gets small I take it away. |

I would do the ultrasound. My Gina died from HGE and the ultrasound showed that the lining of her intestines have thinned out to a non repairable degree. I pray that little Bentley recovers completely ASAP. |
