Did your baby show any signs of HGE from blood work? My vet said everything was normal from blood work ....

I also would let them do the ultrasound. Especially if your dog is a chewer like ours. My friend lost her dog because she refused to do an ultrasound and to this day she never knew what happened. I know how expensive these hospitals can be I just paid $32,00 for cataract surgery and this is the second surgery he's had in 7 months. You should apply for a Care Card because it's great to have in an emergency and they give you payment plans. I don't know what I would do without it. When you have a pet it's a blessing.

I am so sorry that you little fella is so ill and there seems to be no reasonable reason or sign of why. I have never heard of such a think happening other than with a tragic accident and blunt force causing bleeding. So, hopefully they will find the answers. I am glad that he is doing better today and hope for better results tomorrow.


Is there the possibility that he had been dropped ?
Its possible if he has that the force of the fall could of caused internal bleeding.

Are coagulation numbers normal?

If his blood counts are normal and he is no longer having rectal bleeding, I would probably not do further testing unless the vets could give me a reason why they felt there was still a possible issue.

Allow me to share a story..... Years ago, I woke in the middle of the night to find blood all over and my little Maxwell was hunched over with blood coming out of his rectum. I rushed him to the vet (I lived in another state then and my vet had 24 hour care for his established clients) ... they immediately started him on ivs. I don't recall everything that was done but by morning he was fine. The vet speculated that perhaps Maxwell had eaten a blade of grass and it had cut his intestines. I told him that that was not possible because I leash walked him at all times and he did not eat any grass. About a week later it hit me what had caused it....there was Maxwell under the bird cage eating seeds that my cockatiel dropped down! I knew then that it was a seed that had caused that incident! Someone mentioned that only an accident or blunt force trauma will cause bleeding, but that is just not the case...it can be something as simple as a blade of grass that has been ingested.

I am happy that Bentley seems to be ok so far! The threat of HGE is very real in yorkies and one should never dismiss bleeding. So happy you went to the vet last night!

A high PCV (Packed cell Volume) blood test is indicative of HGE. If this is the case, he should stay on IV fluid therapy until that test returns to normal limits. There is no known cause for HGE, bacterial infection is suspect, some think stress can bring it on. If the PCV is within normal limits, I would probably get the US. His xrays didn't show anything? Did the vet palpate his abdomen? They can usually feel abnormalities in the gut. (IMHO)

I dont think so, I was with him all day long when he started throwing up and he didnt fall from anywhere. Then everything got worse the next day ...

The ultrasound shows everything is normal. The stomach is a little bit enlarged but nothing to worry about the vet said. He just ate and no more bloody stool for now. They will call me later for an update. I asked them to keep him until tomorrow morning on fluids and see how he does.

This is so exhausting. I didnt get any sleep. I keep waking up. Ugh. I'm just relieved everything is normal.

Maybe he ate something. Those jerky treats, an antler he used to have, my hair, the carpet, worms, I dont know ... He just eats everything thats on his way :(

What should I give him for food tomorrow. I was thinking about wet food. He eats orijen but they dont make wet food. Something that can be easy on his stomach?

Just read this thread. Sorry, I don't have any experience to share with you, but positive thoughts are definitely sent your and Bentley's way. So glad that you got Bentley the attention he needed, or you may have regretted it. I sure hope that he is back to his normal self real soon. These sweet dogs sure get us worried sometimes, but they certainly are worth every penny:) Bentley, you sure scared Mommy! Hope you are feeling back to normal soon, and don't forget - don't be such a hoover:)

What kind of jerky treats?

So scary that everything is coming back normal, bc leaking blood is not normal. Is he still at the EC or at your regular vet? I don't even want to think how much this is costing at a EC.

And I agree with Taylor asking, what kind of jerky treats? Hoping they aren't from China.

I would ask the vet. They will probably advise something like Hill's ID until his gi tract settles down.

I know you must be relieved that he is stable. Bleeding like that is very scary.

That's what I was wondering if they where the china ones and caused it.

:) Well that's good ! You just never can tell with these little ones they are so full of energy and a lot faster than you think. Even just a leap off of the couch can cause them great harm.

You can ask your vet if he should be on a special diet. If so they can provide you with a few cans of the ID special bland diet. If not and you feel that he would do better on a soft food you can always moisten his dry kibble with just water. Just let it soak for about an hour before each feeding.

I buy Blue Buffalo Chicken Jerky every once in awhile, but these past two weeks I've been giving him True Chews Premium Jerky cuts. They both said they were made in the USA.

I am glad Bentley is doing a little better. My Cali had 2 bouts of HGE and both times her PCA was elevated. Cali also has Irritable bowel. When stressed she will start pooping blood. My vet gave me metradrozinole to give her when she has a bout. When she had the HGE she was throwing up and pooping blood, wouldn't eat and was hunched over in pain and needs to get right to the vet. With her IB, she will act normal and eat just poop blood. I give her the medicine and she is fine. Awhile ago I babysat for my brothers GF's demon child and Cali is scared of him. She pooped blood that night I gave her the medicines and she was fine. Last year I had to stay in a hotel with them when my floors were being installed and she pooped blood at the hotel. I ran to the vet to get medicine as I couldn't get in the house to her medicine and she was fine. Cali's IB was diagnosed with a intestinal biopsy when she was being spayed so we knew for sure what was causing her tummy problems. I hope they can find a cause for Bentley's bleeding. It is so scary and I am so glad you got him in. If it had been HGE immediate care is needed.

I have given my izzy True chews. It's product of and made in the USA...we have NEVER had a problem.. But we only give them once in a while..like only once weekly :) I hope Bentley gets feeling better very soon

I'm not familiar with that brand, but as long as they are US made and not China, then that can't be the reason. Is he doing better now? Is he home yet?

I've been thinking about and worried about your Bentley all day at work. It's funny how we all worry about a pup, and his mom, that we've never even met. Relieved to hear he is improving. I know it's frustrating to run test after test and still not have an answer, but on the other hand it's good to know they haven't found anything horrible wrong. Praying that he'll continue to improve and will be back home with you with no ill effects. Hope you are able to get some much needed rest...

I googled and search for anything and could not find anything really there was one review that a person said there dog almost died but they did not go into detail. So thinking its not the true chews. Still praying for him.
