Default Adonis update, blind, renal failure and ataxia...

Last year at this time, I had a healthy 11 year old boy. This year, first he was diagnosed with Ataxia ( like 2 days after booster shots!). In May, he was diagnosed with renal failure. I have a great holistic vet who's really helped a lot with this. She's taught me how to home cook for him, to keep that creatinine low. About 3 weeks ago, we did blood work again though, and it jumped up from 1 to 2. Now, we're doing daily sub q fluid instead of weekly. He gets blood work done again Dec 2ond. I'm hoping its going down.
In july, I was noticing he was bumping into things a LOT. I took him to an opthomologist. They suspected SARDS, but couldn't confirm it, without a $500 test. Said there is no use in the $500 test if I couldn't take him to Iowa for treatment. I'm like omg....I'm in south Alabama.
Right now, he sleeps a lot. I built a ramp to the bed, but going up it, he's only done a few times. But he will walk down it to do our middle of the night potty.
I have a crate on the bed he sleeps in now, as he's walked off the side of the bed a time or 2. I hate having to crate him, as he's always slept next to me, but I have to keep him safe from walking off the side of the bed.
That is our update. Not good, considering he was very healthy this time last year. I will NOT EVER give him any more boosters.
I'm just glad with all the ER visits, they had a holistic vet there, that opened her own clinic last summer. I can contact her anytime through facebook, and she gets back with me. Day or night. She's wonderful, and so is her tech. Adonis loves both of them, and loves his daily outing there.

Poor Adonis. I am sorry he is going through this. Keeping him safely on the floor at night is a good idea, so he doesn't fall again.

I didn't know there is any treatment for SARDs. Is this something new?

I'm so sorry about Adonis' medical problems. I don't think he could ask for a more caring Mom! I will pray for your sweet boy! My Maddie turned 9 in September and I am not having any more vaccinations for her. My other two are both sick, so they will have no more either.

I have been in such a muddle over vacinations. I have been reading a lot that now they believe a lot of them will last for the lifetime of the pet. Ours are both due for boosters but DH and I are going to discuss with our vet just getting their rabies (which the law requires) and waiting on the others. It is so hard to know what is best. I also am going to talk to her about doing titters on them.

I'm so very sorry to hear this news. Is he taking Denamarin? It's a liver supplement that helps remove toxins and stuff from their system. IMHO, it's worth a try. Keeping Adonis and you in my prayers...

There is a DNA test for Congenital Ataxia. If you feel this is a result of the vaccines, have you tried him on prednisone, as this usually results in a decrease of symptoms. Which vaccines did he get?

Oh....poor little guy!!!

Do you think the Renal Failure had anything to do with his boosters??

I've got a senior guy and I am really worried about continuing to vaccinate him as he's already having issues. I am going to have to do a lot of reading and consult with our vet before I decide what to do this year.

There was another member on here who had gotten a halo vest for her yorkie who had went blind. It obviously wouldn't help in bed, but if he's bumping into things on the floor it might help.

Also...Have you thought about trying to buy or construct rails for your bed so he can't jump or fall out. Not sure if it's a possibility or not, but it may be an alternative to crating him. He wouldn't be able to get down to go potty without your assistance though. My senior has to get up to go potty in the middle of the night, but he is really good about waking me up. He either paws at me or will sit and talk to me until I wake up. I swear I am trained to it like a mother is trained to a baby crying because I can be a fairly hard sleeper but I wake up instantly once I hear him making his little noises.

These suggestions I intended to say are for discussion with your vet. You can get Denamarin online without a prescription though.

As for vaccines, I stopped all but Rabies at age 10 (Peek A Boo), and I think he's medically exempted from Rabies now. He'll be 17 in 3 weeks!

Oh wow...I hope my little guy lives to a ripe old age of 17!!

When you stopped the vaccinations at 10 years old, did you still let your pup do all of the things they normally would??

My little guy doesn't get boarded, and he doesn't really associate with any dogs that aren't vaccinated, but he does enjoy going on walks around the neighborhood. Do you think it's still safe to do things like that if they aren't vaccinated??

Hoping you and Adonis receive good news on December 2.

My puppy Luca is now 18 months old (young adult I guess), and he has only had his puppy boosters. I took him to a Holistic vet in October and had him Titre tested. The test measures the immunity levels for Parvo and Distempter. Fortunately, where I live the Rabies vaccination is not required. I would only give him this vaccination if we were travelling to the States and only by itself and by a Holistic Vet. I believe there is a Rabies titre test, but it's quite expensive. I was quoted 270.00 in Canada.

Over vaccinations can cause a multitude of chronic problems. I find the titre is a little more expensive than the actual vaccinations, but it's worth it. I paid 80.00 for the Parvo and Distemper titre.

Vet got his results back. His creatinine is now 4.3. Last month it was 2.3. We've been doing the sub q's daily. She didn't think an iv and flushing him would help at this point.

In another words, he's dying. I haven't been this tore up since I lost my brother back in 1976.

I pulled a mattress off a bed, and will be putting bed pads underneath the sheet, so we can all sleep close to eachother on the kitchen floor, for as long as he lasts. He peed the bed last night. Pooped the floor today. Threw up the other night. But still eating some.

He was born in 2001. Really not fair. Probably didn't get him from the most reputable breeder (before l learned about back yard breeders). No use in doing more tests. After reading about what they go through in end stage, I know he's staring at it when he is awake.

And Venus isn't understading why Adonis is getting all the special loving and she isn't. I feel like a bad mama.

Thanks for all the prayers..
