| metronidazole suspension prescribed Hi everyone, Yesterday we took our Missy to the vet for her rabies vaccine, blood test and yearly exam. At the time she had been just experiencing very loose stools and vomiting bile in the morning. She was prescribed metronidazole suspension 1mg twice a day for 7 days. Gave her 2 doses yesterday and this morning, soon after she had a crazy bout of shakes. She has just eaten and seems to have calmed down and sleeping. I've contacted the vet and she said it wouldn't seem to be a side effect from the medication. Has anyone else ever experienced such? Thinking she's having anxiety from her legs being soar? Worried and info would be great. Thank you all and glad to have joined such a great community. Last edited by Missysmom76; 08-15-2013 at 05:33 AM. Reason: Spelling error |

YT 2000 Club Member | My girls have been on this medication many times and have had no side effects with it. I really agree and don't think it is the medicine. If she isn't eating or feeling well, may cause her shaking.

|
I don't understand why vets vaccinate sick animals!
I would like to say to everyone out there, if you take your baby to the vet because the pup is "sick" or having diarrhea, vomiting, etc.....DO NOT ALLOW THEM TO VACCINATE THE BABY!!! We have to speak up for our babies because they have no voice.....you are the only thing standing between that vet and your baby......just say NO!! if they suggest vaccinating your baby and the pup is not feeling in tip top shape! (and I am sorry, but if my vet suggested vaccinating my baby and I was there because the pup was sick to begin with, I personally would seriously be looking at changing vets. You can always reschedule an appointment for vaccinations when baby is well.....) |

| I agree that more than likely it is not the medication. I would HIGHLY recommend NOT giving rabies or any other vaccinations to a dog that is not healthy at the time the vaccine is administered. Missy had something that was causing vomiting and loose stools. Probably nothing serious but none the less causing her health issues. These vaccines have side effects and bring their own list of problems for these little dogs. Even healthy dogs have problems with vaccinations as we have all read on this forum. I am sure with time Missy will be back to her normal healthy self soon. Keep us advised. |

| My first yorkie, Gina, took this med and she did get the shakes. If I recall correctly this could be a side effect. I AWAYS read the inserts regarding possible side effects for all meds.

| I use metronidazole all the time and have never had a problem with it. I have one who has IBS and this is one drug I have on hand at all times. I agree with others it may have been the vac and like it was stated never give a pet a vac when they are sick. This Vet in my opinion was in the wrong to do this.

| This question got me thinking because I do use it. Is Missy a puppy or an older dog? I just read quite a few articles on Metronidazole because I was not familiar with anyone I know having side effects from it. Seizures, imbalance and symptoms similar to shaking are side effects of an overdose. That does not mean you gave Missy too much rather the normal dosage may have been too much for Missy. She may require a smaller dose or another medication. It is not recommended for puppies although I do know breeders that give it to their puppies and have had no problems. If it the medication then this may explain why she started shaking. The medication should be out of her system by now so if it was the cause then she should be better. Update? |

| You guys are all fantastic! Thank you for all replies!!! Missy seems to be feeling a little better, shakes stopped mid day, bit more lively and eating well... Still really sleepy though. This morning really scared me. I agree she should not have gotten that rabbies shot but the vet insisted that the rabies had very little side effects and skipped her lepto and temper shot. Told me to return in 2 months for those. Blood came back negative,... Our good news of the day still waiting on stool sample results. Her next dosage is coming up this evening. Fingers crossed... No more shaking episodes. Thanks again everyone! Xx Last edited by Missysmom76; 08-15-2013 at 02:13 PM. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Well, your vet isn't exactly correct on this....Metro can have several side effects, including nausea, upset stomach, dizziness and several other things. Any of those symptoms could then result in shaking in a doggie. Glad to hear she is doing better though ! Hope tonight's dose goes better.
