| Do dogs get the flu? Yesterday morning at 430 am Enzo woke me up throwing up on my bed. I cleaned everything up and took him outside where he threw up a couple more times...The rest of the day we spent lying on the couch... He ate very little and when he did, he threw it back up Late in the evening he seemed to feel better, ate a bit again & later threw it up. So this morning I tried to get him into the Vet and wasn't able to cause they were booked solid All day lying around, resting. Tonight he's starving, running around hiding bones & playing with his toys, drinking well and his normal little self Did he have the 24 hr flu?

| I'm glad Enzo has recovered. My boys had a 24 hour bug a couple years ago. They couldn't keep anything down all day and then they were fine the next day. This was at the height of a drought and I think they picked up something in our neighborhood. I was advised to rest their systems on the day they couldn't keep anything down. The important thing is to make sure they stay hydrated. Any signs of dehydration, lethargy, shaking, go to the vet. When I resumed feeding them, I started slowly with a cracker type treat made for dogs. I would look into an alternate/backup vet for days when your regular one is not available. One of the things I like about our vet is that they always get us in one way or another.

| He was chewing on chicken broth ice chips when he wasn't feeling well, and I did the skin pinching test (I learned that here ) so I know he wasn't dehydrated...Someone mentioned children's pedylite? The unfortunate thing in this city of 60,000 is we have very few Vets & no ER

| You pinch the skin on the back of their neck and if it stays in the pinch position they are dehydrated...Can someone help me explain it better?

| You pretty much nailed it If the skin springs back quickly (3-5 seconds) from the pinch position, he isn't dehydrated. If it sticks there a while, you could have a problem.

| Glad little Enzo is all better. My vet always calls it doggy flu when mine are sick. That is after she goes through all the questions like "could he/she have gotten into anything." Not long ago all of mine got sick one after the other. No one dog was sick for that long but it took about two weeks to get everyone back in shape. That was two weeks of cleaning up poop and vomit several times a day! |

| I felt so helpless when he was sick, and when he did throw up unlike one of us who would stick to one spot, he moved around with every gag Good thing we have hardwood floors! I found out later from the Vet that there was/is a strain of the "Dog flu" going around, and because it is a new strain, no dog is immuned to it! It usually lasts a day, with a cough, but is not serious.
