advice needed with torn ligament Hi Daisy tore her ligament on Easter Sunday in her rear left leg. They said it was a partial tear. No surgery was needed but rest and restrain her from jumping and no walking except to do her business. Her leg was doing real well she has been walking on it without limping. Today she was chasing Pixe which I tried to stop and she is back to limping again:(. My question is how long does this take to heal and does anyone have any advice to keep her busy so she gets tired without exercise. I think she just gets so bored and starts wrestling and it is so hard to keep a Jack Russell poodle down...Any suggestions appreciated! |
Wow, that's a tough one. Hope she didn't tear it some more. I would have the vet examine it to see if there is any evidence she did that and if not, then rest her some more with lots of personal attention on your part. Trying to keep one of these little guys entertained when they are injured is some of the hardest work you will ever undertake. |
Ask the vet if swimming would be okay... if yes, then fill up your tub and wear her butt out! |

It doesn't heal without surgery unless you'd like her to have arthritis for the rest of her life. I went through this last year with my own dog who was 11 at the time. You might want to read this article. Yorkie Haven Rescue - Cranial Cruciate Ligament Tear Info |

They feel it is a partial tear. She was walking on it within 2 days after she did it. I have read many articles on this and there is a difference between a partial tear and a complete tear. At least this is what the surgeon told me. I am just trying to keep her down and was looking for suggestions on how to do that. As soon as she starts to do good she does something and starts limping again. I am taking her back to the vet tomorrow. |

I didn't know that CCL tears ever healed other than to scar at the tear site. I thought they remained weak, painful and always re-injured very easily, could cause permanent limp and pain and subject the opposite leg to undue stress, especially in small dogs that jump so much. I didn't realize it was a CCL tear. I sure would vet her with an ortho and be sure she has pain relief in the meantime. I'll sure add that baby to my prayers right now. Poor little thing. |
They have her on tramadol and metacam but with Daisy's health issues I have to be very careful with what she takes and as far as understanding the pain I have torn ligaments in my knee as well:( I thank you for your prayers and I am taking her to the vet tom. |

She may have completely torn it this time. She needs to be seen by a board certified surgeon imho. She is going to have severe arthritis and live her life in pain if it is not repaired. I don't think you can compare your knee ligaments to hers....and honestly you have a choice...she does not. :( I will keep her in my prayers. |
Honestly I would do anything for my dogs, and I have. If you saw Daisy's health records you would understand that I have ALWAYS done what is best for her. I will do what my Vet and the surgeon recommends considering her health issues! I don't think you completely understand the whole picture and I did not post this thread to be jumped on I was looking for suggestions to keep her busy while she recovered. ~~wow~~ |
You know, it just hit me....you have a torn ACL and are walking on it? That is a pretty debilitating injury most times. Are you sure you are thinking of the same thing when you are thinking about your pup? Are you sure that you understand how debilitating this is? I honestly don't believe so because you seem so distant about it....perhaps you misunderstand this injury? Please at least take your baby to a boarded surgeon and totally understand what this is about before making a permanent decision. |
