Keeping you both in my prayers. I hope you get good results. |
Hope Tibbe's BAT results come back normal! Take care of yourself Jeanie! |
Ugghhhh. It's been an awful day. Couldn't eat or sleep today. Just waiting until he is ready to go. This house is like a tomb today. Have kept TV going all day and watching everything to keep my mind of BAT results and the way he acted last night, worrying what that was and what in the world tonight will be like after his BAT rich meal. If that wasn't abnormal behavior last night from poisons in the brain or liver damage or something like that I don't know what it could have been. He went from normal, happy to anxious and unbelievably restless and scratching in less than an hour. I have never seen a dog stay awake all night before. That, to me, was liver shunt or one of those type disorders' aberrant behavior manifestation. What in the world else could it have been? Well, it's about time to go get my little boy! Please pray that he has a peaceful night. |
It sounds more like a food allergy than LS... I'd ask the vet about it and an alternate food. |
He's home and miserable, rubbing his head and face on everything and scratching with his hind feet until his lower under parts seem hot and red. He can't really be still. I know they fed him a fatty meal at the vet's during his BAT and he's not eating now - just drinking water and rolling around and itching. The vet said I could give him 2.5 ml. Children's Benadryl q 6 hrs. for this. He's now 6.3 lbs. Is that not a huge dog and would you give it to your baby? I gave him 1/4 teaspoon of it last night and after an hour of quiet, he seemed more amped and restless than ever. I'm just stymied. His tail has been down and he's seeking something to scratch himself against since he's been home. The only other time in his life he's been like this was after starting him on Royal Canin GI and he was just like this within a couple hours of his first meal and it went down hill from there. Once he got off that and on the Hill's I/D GI, it all stopped almost instantly. Friday night we started him on Hill's I/D Low Fat and he began doing this a little bit Sunday and then stopped and then in earnest last night. But he wasn't eating that much of it until yesterday - that's the first day he ate normally and after his second meal of it, the scratching started in bad. His night was miserable and it seems like tonight is going to be the same. I'm so scared to give him that much Benadryl in case it sedates him first and then he's so hyper his heartrate gets wild. Would a 1/8 of 1/4 Valium 5 mg. be better - just sedate him? He wouldn't itch when he's asleep would he? He's had 1/4 of a Valium 5 mg. before and he went to sleep for a while. It was very early on when I'd first gotten him and he was wild and panicking all the time. Vet said sedate him for the night and it worked. He never needed it again until one very bad panic attack he had since. Same thing - he just slept for 2 or 3 hours. What do you all think? |
I chickened out on the diazepam(thinking if the ER Vet has to give him Benadryl during the night it might not mix well with the diazepam/Valium) and gave him 2 ml. Children's Benadryl Liquid by mouth at 7:45 pm and put a cold cloth over his pelvic area where he's so red and hot and he's lying in my lap q u i e t 9 minutes later! If he wakes very hyper after a while and his HR is high, we''re ready to go to the ER Vet for help tonight. He's been through enough in this last 24 hours so one way or another, this baby is having a restful night here or at the hospital. Pray that he will stay oout for a while and give his little body a chance to rest. He apparetnly barked all day at the vet and was too amped and excited there to scratch or somehow they just didn't notice it. But he came home tail tucked and the minute I put him down he began wallowing, scratching and rubbing his body and face against the walls and anything. Couldn't be still. Looking at me and whining for help. I so hated to dose him with Benadryl again after last night I was hoping his fatigue would kick in and knock him out but it never did. Finally, I had to act and just get him to the hospital if he gets worse from this after a while. I'm scared silly his heart will race and go into fib or something from that Benadryl since it hyperexcited him last night after the first hour. Praise God he's still asleep at 8:00 pm! It's worth gold to see Tibbe relaxed and at rest finally. I don't think he could have taken much more of his state of every nerve alerted, excited and itching. He was a mess. But my clothes are laid out and everything read to drive the 7 minuites to the hospital if we have to go. |
oh poor Tibbe...Here's hoping the Benedryl gives him some much needed rest and he feels better soon. What a scare it has been for you. I'll say a prayer for him tonight. |
Sending prayers that you both get a good nights sleep. It is so hard when they are sick the stress can be so overwhelming...Sending prayers |
While the original issue does require a BAT, this restless itching sounds food related. ?how about c and rice? Benadryl makes some sleepy and some hyper. It won't do much for food allergies. Your vet's dose is correct. 1/2 tsp.. |
My prayers for little Tibbe. I would see if he is having a food allergy or is he highly allergic to fleas. Food allergies cause alot of scratching. I had that problem with my poodle and had to put her on a venison diet. it cleared her up. I am so sorry sweet little Tibbe is going through this. I hope you get down to the bottom of his problem soon. Can you bathe him in a hypo-allergic shampoo to relieve the itching. I love this little guy and hope he is better really soon. You are in Texas, are there fleas there bugging him? |
Try feeding him a very bland diet and see if he scratches. I would bet it is the food. Some dogs need a different diet. I just talked to a Yorkie breeder who feeds her dog all raw food. Maybe Tibbe needs that. You said he itched after he ate. |
I'm the one who would up taking 1/2 of a diazepam! I'm a wreck too, so worried how this night is going to go and what's causing all of this. I do think the food change is likely the cause but gosh, he needs a lot fat diet and what in the world can I do if it makes him this miserable vs. having all that tummy trouble or aggravating a shunt situation. I'm so tense I'm about to break into pieces so I dosed myself. Suddenly, life looks a little easier and the rough edges have been smoothed in these last 10 minutes. It feels good to that that knot in my stomach is getting smaller and softer. Wisih I could sleep! I'm going to stretch out beside Tibbe. I just replaced the cool washcloth on his lower underside under him and put him blanket back over his botton half to keep the breeze from the fan from chilling him. Also put a little cool washcloth on his hot eats. His pads are cool as is the rest of him - just the parts he's been scratching are hot. Hope he's cooling those places down some as this poor little thing rests. Uh oh, he just puked up some stuff and is reverse sneezing a bit. got to go. |

I am so sorry to hear that Tibbe is not feeling well and that he is itchy and restless on top of it all. Sending prayers and best wishes for your sweet Tibbe. I pray both of you feel better and get some needed rest tonight. |
I have had excellent results with Cali on Atopica for her terrible allergies. She started out on it every day and now years later she does well on 1 a week. We tried everything else to stop her scratching and nothing worked until the Atopica. Just a thought if it is allergies. I am praying you and Tibbe get a good nights sleep. |
There are lots and lots of food choices still vailable for him. A couple of us do have pups who can't eat meat. They dan't tolerate it in dog food either though. What ws wring withtye old ID he was doing ok on? |
Tibbe Oh poor Tibbe and you! What a terrible few days you both have been through. No sleep or peace for either of you. You must be so stressed and exhausted, and so need some rest and sleep. Hoping some sedatives will give you and little Tibbe welcome sleep tonight. I feel your pain and frustration at not being to help your baby. Praying the BAT turns out normal and that this horrible scratching and hyperactivity ends soon for Tibbe. Wishing you peace and love. Get well soon Tibbe. |
Crystal, he's heaved for the third time now and spit up a little more junk. That Benadryl has obviously turned his tummy wrong side out. Can I give him his regular dose of Cerenia by mouth for the nausea? Would it be safe with the Benadryl. they changed him from the regular old Hill's I/D GI since he got sick on that and has periodically since he's been on it since June of last year, though he did have that recent stretch of good weeks in a row before this bout. If possilbe for now, we're going to have to go back on that. He can't live like he's had to live this last 24 hours miserable with itching, He's just wild with it, so restless and whining and moving from place to place and all the time trying to get himself scratched. His ears are back and his tail is clamped down. |
I'm moving tomorrow and my Plumb's drug handbook is packed.:( So I texted my vet and she says yes they can be used together.:) Obviously I have to tell you to defer to your vet though. (I'd give it ;)). Purina HA if you can't get this straightened out,, |
God bless you, Crystal. He's heaved a 4th time just now and I'm so scared it's going to wake him up for good and start in that awful wallowiing and itching again. I'm going to give the Cerenia if he wretches one more time and watch him like ahawk after that. Thanks a million. Purina HA - GTK!!!! |
This last wet cloth I changed from under his belly and pelvis was very warm. Took his rectal temp - it's 102.2. He's never much over 101 ever. Could his itching and stress and nausea be causing this? And this temp be helping to cause his nausea? |
Has your vet ruled out the Heart Guard as a possible cause. Some of the symptoms are listed as side effects of Heart Guard? I feel so bad for little Tibbe's. |
After taking his temp, Tibbe was in the living room, kitchen, getting in his carrier and back out, back into the kitchen, LR, den, carrier, rubbing his face and body all along on the walls. At about 9:55 pm he came to lie beside me on the pillow, would lie there a minute and rub his face on the couch arm, back down for a minute and up. At 10:00 pm he spit up again and at 10:06pm gave him 1/4 of the Cerenia 24 mg. and he licked some sugarwater off my fingers. At 10:24 pm, he threw up whitish stuff, quite a bit of water, which he'd drunk after having his Cerenia. I found a piece of the Cerenia (the 1/4 had split into two irregular pieces breaking it up) on the counter top where I'd given it to Tibbe so I gave that to him right after 10:24 pm. At 10:33 pm, Tibbe lay down on the other end of the couch on his blanket and he's been down now 8 minutes without rubbing his face or body or scratching. I pray he didn't lose most of his main dose with the emises and he'll rest. Tonight is so far a duplicate of last night. I think he's a llittle cooler(ears, belly/pelvic area) now than he was when I took his temp but don't want to take it again until he's quieter unless he gets really hot feeling. I just hope this quiet spell will last. Uh oh, I raised up to check on him and he raised his head! All of that medication and he's still not knocked out! Now, he's down in the floor. This is the same dog that can sleep the clock around and he hasn't really slept now for the second night and surely didn't today according to the vet's tech and the vet. |
I wouldn't give him any food or water for at least 2-4 hours. Once they start vomiting, they may try to eat or drink out of frustration and will just continue to vomit. After some time has passed, allow him a very small amount of water and see if he keeps it down. |
Poor Tibbe and also you. I feel so bad. If you need to talk or just need someone to listen, please feel free to call, no matter how late it is. It sounds like a food allergy to me. I had one very allergic Yorkie, and I know how difficult it was. I used a topical hydrocortisone spray to help her itching, and she was also prescribed prescription medication. I pray that things get better for both of you. |
Is he eating dry or canned I/D Low fat or both? |
KJC, he's on the Hill's I/D Low Fat dry since Friday and that's what appears to be itching him so unless it is a flare-up of his liver. Before Friday, he was on Hill's I/D GI dry and once he started on that last June, the itching he was having from the Royal Canin GI just stopped and never came back until we changed his food to help his tummy digest easier. He's quiet again. After he got down on the den floor that last time but he got right back up on the couch again and went to sleep on my feet and leg. I haven't moved since. I sat up and looked at him and he's breathing not too fast or slowly and sleeping!!! He's been there now about 30 plus minutes!!! Thank God if this will just last - maybe we can stay out of the hospital. Trouble is, I've got a tummy bug too and having to visit the restroom frequently last night and today and tonight it was bad about 7:00 but now is better. I hope I don't have to "go" anytime soon and wake him. I'm so praying he'll rest tonight. He needs it so bad. |
I just compared the Hill's Prescription I/D and I/D Low fat dry and canned varieties. The I/D regular canned is the only one out of the 4 that does not contain soybean oil, which is a known allergen in dogs. Both dried foods have a majority of corn/grain ingredients, and pork fat. If he is sensitive to grains, the canned variety may be a better choice... many Yorkies are sensitive and cannot eat pork (too rich I think). HTH, K See next post: |
I am so sorry I have missed this! Thinking of you and Tibbe! Purina HA has worked wonders for us from time to time when I am not home cooking. I will keep you in my prayers. |
