Help! Yogi is lethargic!
 
Our 11 month old usually crazy active baby has been lethargic all week. He eats but skulks slowly around looking scared, hasn't picked up a toy or chewy all week. Took him to vet Wednesday and again Friday. Physical exams both times, extensive blood work, all negative. Then a friend tells me it could be his back is hurt, give half baby aspirin which I did. Half hour later he is perky old self again! My husband thinks we need a new vet, I think the vet did what he could, Yogi never whimpered even when he was being moved, poked, etc. I want to continue aspirin tomorrow and bring him back Monday for possible x ray, or MRI whatever would show what's wrong. I should also mention this started after a play date with another yorkie and they rolled around and played a lot! Anyone ever experience this or have advice? I love Yogi and have found this site so helpful! Thanks

It sounds like he could have injured his back during the play date. I would call the vet and mention about the possibility of his hurting his back and how the aspirin seems to help. I'm not sure if aspirin is good for dogs but I'm not sure. Hopefully someone else can advise on that. DOgs are good at hiding their pain especially at the vets. I hope Yogi feels better soon and please keep us posted.

I agree with Patti. The aspirin should be buffered to be given to a dog since it is rough on the stomach. I hope your little one gets better soon.

Thanks for the advice, we are taking Yogi to a 24/7 animal hosp today, could not see waiting for Monday as he is suffering, will update later

Didn't your vet do a physical exam when you went in? One thing to note when you go to the vet ... your pup should be checked out thoroughly from head to tail. No matter what I am in for, my vet always gives a thorough exam...and if a pup is acting strange like Yogi is, certainly an exam of the back is in order. They can assess for pain by that.
I am sure the EC vet will do that. Hope all is ok. I also would never give my pup any medicine if the condition was unknown..and certainly not guess the dosage. You really should call a vet before giving medications...and make sure it is the correct dosage.

Awe poor Yogi:( I would definitely get x-rays don't let the Vet tell you otherwise. Our vet didn't do x-rays on Georgie and when we took him to the Specialist he was diagnosed in 10 minutes after the x-rays were done. Please keep us posted. Prayers and thoughts for you and Yogi.

Thank you all and yes the vet turned, twisted poked etc seemed to do thorough physical exam but it didn't occur to us till Saturday afternoon as we did a timeline that the lethargy started after the puppy play date. Lady Jane you are right about not giving meds, I did know the correct dose from previous dogs, but we acted out of desperation. Anyway out the door to the ER vet, will update

Prayers going out for you and little man Yogi....it is so sad when our babies are not well and we have nothing to go on....let us know what they come up with.....

Thanks for all of your good wishes!, it turns out Yogi has a sprained lower back, also was slightly dehydrated so after IV fluids he is on an anti inflammatory and a med so his stomach won't get upset. The DR said we should see good improvement in 24 hours. He actually seems a bit better maybe from the fluids. Gave him his meds and he's resting comfortably. Thanks again all!

So glad you got to the bottom of it...hope the meds help him. :) I have had this happen to pups before and they did fine...your husband might be right about a new vet.

Happy to hear there wasn't anything more wrong with him..I know you will be very careful of his play pals now.
