Help! Yogi is lethargic! Our 11 month old usually crazy active baby has been lethargic all week. He eats but skulks slowly around looking scared, hasn't picked up a toy or chewy all week. Took him to vet Wednesday and again Friday. Physical exams both times, extensive blood work, all negative. Then a friend tells me it could be his back is hurt, give half baby aspirin which I did. Half hour later he is perky old self again! My husband thinks we need a new vet, I think the vet did what he could, Yogi never whimpered even when he was being moved, poked, etc. I want to continue aspirin tomorrow and bring him back Monday for possible x ray, or MRI whatever would show what's wrong. I should also mention this started after a play date with another yorkie and they rolled around and played a lot! Anyone ever experience this or have advice? I love Yogi and have found this site so helpful! Thanks |
It sounds like he could have injured his back during the play date. I would call the vet and mention about the possibility of his hurting his back and how the aspirin seems to help. I'm not sure if aspirin is good for dogs but I'm not sure. Hopefully someone else can advise on that. DOgs are good at hiding their pain especially at the vets. I hope Yogi feels better soon and please keep us posted. |
I agree with Patti. The aspirin should be buffered to be given to a dog since it is rough on the stomach. I hope your little one gets better soon. |
Thanks for the advice, we are taking Yogi to a 24/7 animal hosp today, could not see waiting for Monday as he is suffering, will update later |
hope yogi feels better |
I am so sorry that this precious baby is suffering, hoping that the Vet will find the cause |
Didn't your vet do a physical exam when you went in? One thing to note when you go to the vet ... your pup should be checked out thoroughly from head to tail. No matter what I am in for, my vet always gives a thorough exam...and if a pup is acting strange like Yogi is, certainly an exam of the back is in order. They can assess for pain by that. I am sure the EC vet will do that. Hope all is ok. I also would never give my pup any medicine if the condition was unknown..and certainly not guess the dosage. You really should call a vet before giving medications...and make sure it is the correct dosage. |
Awe poor Yogi:( I would definitely get x-rays don't let the Vet tell you otherwise. Our vet didn't do x-rays on Georgie and when we took him to the Specialist he was diagnosed in 10 minutes after the x-rays were done. Please keep us posted. Prayers and thoughts for you and Yogi. |
Thank you all and yes the vet turned, twisted poked etc seemed to do thorough physical exam but it didn't occur to us till Saturday afternoon as we did a timeline that the lethargy started after the puppy play date. Lady Jane you are right about not giving meds, I did know the correct dose from previous dogs, but we acted out of desperation. Anyway out the door to the ER vet, will update |

Prayers going out for you and little man Yogi....it is so sad when our babies are not well and we have nothing to go on....let us know what they come up with..... |
Thanks for all of your good wishes!, it turns out Yogi has a sprained lower back, also was slightly dehydrated so after IV fluids he is on an anti inflammatory and a med so his stomach won't get upset. The DR said we should see good improvement in 24 hours. He actually seems a bit better maybe from the fluids. Gave him his meds and he's resting comfortably. Thanks again all! |

Poor Yogi, glad you got a good diagnosis finally. Hope he continues to get better! |
Glad to know Yogi is feeling better. Never give a dog meds without consulting a vet first. I know how desperate you can get but sometimes you can do more harm than good. |
I'm freaking out and hysterical Yogi was unable to stand up as if he were tipsy, he whimpered a sound I never heard before. Rushed him to ER waiting to hear he was admitted but no news yet checking for liver shunt problem. I'm praying |
Wow...something indeed is very wrong. Prayers for Yogi....and for you. |
Praying for your little man. |
This is wonderful that you got him diagnosed! Was his play date larger than he was? Poor little Yogi...he was having a ball!! |
Oh no prayers for Yogi! |
So thankful little Yogi will feel better soon. We all forget how delicate these little Yorkies are and I have to watch ole Spud jumping off the couch. I have stairs there but he forgets to use them. I hope little Yogi will be healthy soon. |
Praying that Yogi gets a favorable 2nd diagnosis.... |
Not good news Well it's terrible news and I am beside myself with grief. The ER vet is pretty sure Yogi has a portosystemic shunt. I am reading all about this and the dr gave us stuff to read. We will know more tomorrow with x rays and further test results. We were able to see Yogi and hold him for about an hour. He has to stay over on iv . He is still disoriented and crying. It is so horrible to see your perky happy puppy like this, it's awful. If this is confirmed we will go to a specialist and see if diet and meds would work or surgery. It depends where the shunt is and how many etc. if anyone knows about this and has advice let me know. I just want my baby back healthy whatever it takes. Thanks:( |
Oh Mo, I am so sad to read this news about Yogi. Many prayers going out for him. |
glad he is hopefully on the mend |
I just seen this post, Im sorry about this |

Don't go for diet and meds. Get the surgery. I did some research on liver shunts recently and everything I came up with was that surgery is risky but has a very good success rate. Diet and meds seem to just prolong life but the pup is always fighting it - hard life. That is from my research online and here. Now, I know others here have actually gone thru this and they will give you MUCH more knowledgeable advice. I will just say that if it were me, I'd do the surgery - no question. Praying for Yogi! You are such a GREAT Yorkie Mommy!!!!!:thumbup: You should be commended on your quick action and not giving up when you knew your baby was not himself. Hugs! Hang in there!
