Eye Tumor Poor Layla seems to have everything stacked against her. Last year we took her to the veterinary opthalmologist for excessive tearing. They could not find any reason for the tearing, her eyes were in good shape and she was in no pain. But, they noticed a discoloration on the top of her eyeball. I said I think I can remember it being there forever, but they took pictures and wanted a checkup. Last week, I took Layla in for a UTI. The tech who works in opthalmology is a good friend of ours, so when she found out I was there, she asked if I could bring Layla into an exam room and she'd quickly take another picture of that discoloration. She just called me and said they looked over the photos from this time and last time, and it has grown a little bit. She told me it is most likely a malignant tumor, but they'd like to see her again to figure out if it is growing INTO her eye or not. She assured me that most eye tumors like this will not spread to the rest of the body so it is not an emergency, but I made an appointment to see them this Thursday anyway. They will use some sort of solution and put a lens on her eye, and that's about as much as I got out of it. Best case scenario is that it's small enough to remove the tumor and save Layla's eye. I've never gone through anything like this with a dog (Layla's just full of firsts!) so I'm not sure what to expect. Googling it doesn't help because I found too many stories where the whole eye needs to be removed and it makes me want to cry! I just hope everything will turn out okay for her. She doesn't seem to have any problems with her vision and she doesn't seem to be in any pain, so I'm really really hoping that it will be an easy fix. |
Oh My I am so sorry poor Layla. I hope is works out for her and you. SENDING PRAYERS LOTS OF PRAYERS!!!! |
Thank you! We need all the prayers and good vibes we can get! I know Layla is a tough cookie and she can take whatever life throws at her, but she really just needs a break! I don't know if it helps to be humorous in these situations, but I just told DH that if she does have to lose an eye, she's just one leg away from becoming a pirate! :( I guess we'll just have to take things as they come and pray that it's not as bad as I feel it is. We just have to keep doing what's best for Layla and making sure she's happy and comfortable. |
I to have felt that a sense of humor helps us get through those dark times. I will agree she would be the cutest pirate. Shiver my tiny timbers.. |

Praying that they caught the tumor in time and can get it removed to save Layla's eye. This girl is a fighter so I know she'll come thru this. And, yeah - stay away from google. ;) |
Oh my poor sweet Layla, she sure has had her share of problems. Just know prayers are going for her. |
Oh, poor Layla...she certainly has had more than her fair share...as have you. I am so sorry. Will keep her and you in my thoughts and prayers. |
Praying for Layla... |
Praying for sweet Layla. She has been through so much. |
Hugs to you and Layla. You both are in my prayers. |
Thanks everyone for all the good thoughts and prayers!!! I know we'll get through it, no matter what they find. |
Well, it's the day we find out what's going on with Layla's eye! DH is taking her in today, because I have a meeting I can't miss at work and if her appointment runs late (as usual!) I would definitely be late for the meeting. Maybe it's better this way too, because I get pretty emotional over her! It really doesn't seem to bother her AT ALL so I'm hopeful. She's had it for as long as I can remember. Last night we were playing and she doesn't have a problem with her sight - she has perfect coordination catching toys that are flying through the air! |
Thinking good thoughts. :) |
Sometimes people and animals just can't catch a break. Prayers coming your way today. |
