1 yr old sick little girl, Luvee...I'm at a loss. First of all I want to thank all that contribute to this great forum. There is so much great information here and I stalk faithfully. Now it seems that I am in need myself. A bit of history... I have a 1 yr. old little girl, only 3 lbs and just had her first heat. Spaying is next but we must get through this first. She has typically been a little spitfire and cheerful nonstop. Loves everyone, which is why her name is Luvee. I came home from work this Saturday afternoon. She was limping a little and a little less playful. So I decided to skip work on Sunday and stay home. She was a little playful but not herself. Nothing seemed that out of the ordinary. Her limp wasn't bad and she wasn't in pain. So when I woke up Monday morning she had gotten progressively worse. I decided to take her to the emergency hospital. They ran tests and took an x-ray of her legs. Nothing showed up. Her blood work was within the range of normal for a 1 yr. old little girl. (according to the dr) Dr. said her liver was a bit elevated but nothing to be concerned about and to have her tested at my vet clinic next week. Well, after coming home with some meticam and tramadol she has been on it 24 hrs and still not better. She sounds like she is crying. I couldn't stand it so we are headed to my vet in 30 minutes. Does anyone have any advise for me? My heart is breaking seeing her like this. Thanks |
I just got home with my little girl. Still not feeling well. Dr did not know what was wrong. She hasn't vomited or had diarrhea. I'm trying to keep her hydrated with water and pedialite. He sent me home with an antibiotic. She did have an enema while we were there and she went a bit. I am open to suggestions and advice. This has myself and 3 vets stumped. |
You are in Dallas Texas....I would take her to Texas A&M vet school....they can diagnose her and give you a treatment plan. You cant help her until you know what is wrong with her, and you cant afford to wait for the pup to get worse or for the problem to clearly manefest itself...these babies, especially ones this small, go down hill quickly. Personally I do not like spending money at vets and not having something to hang my hat on.... Take her to A&M....they are a super facility and they have all the specialists and cutting edge equipment needed to help you little girl. God bless you and Luvee and keep us posted on what happens! |
Thank you for that suggestion. Do you have a contact there? I have taken off from work and can leave tomorrow. |
You do not need to call ahead for an appointment nor do you need a referral to take an emergency to the small animal hospital....you can just arrive at the campus and tell them you need direction to the small animal hospital....you will get answers there...they are super! I would take any labs you have gotten from your vet....if you can swing by your vet and get her medical records, that will be great.... |
Google Texas A&M university Small Animal Hospital....that may give you directions to exactly where you need to go there...it has been years since I was there and I was there with horses, not small animals.... |
From the A&M site: If you believe your animal is having a neurologic emergency or an emergency of any kind please contact the Small Animal Clinic at 979-845-2351. We have critical care clinicians on staff 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Dogs and cats with emergencies may come in at any hour and do not require veterinarian referral. You can get directions by calling 979-845-2351 or on the Maps & Directions page. |

OP....you have a specialty hospital right there in Dallas that I have heard is very good. You could also go there. As for A&M, yes, I believe you can go straight there; but I would call them first so that they know you are coming. |
I will keep you and Luvee in my thoughts and prayers. I am going to contact someone in Dallas to find out the name of that place there if you want to go there. |
It just hit me...if she was just in heat...maybe pyometra? Did they consider that? I am concerned about this. |
There is an Emergecny Hospital that is located in Grapevine that is also has ties with the Dallas Vetinary Surgical Center that has several locations in the DFW area. If possible I would have her admitted to Emergency and then she can get moved over to the Specialist Office to see a specialist. This way you shouldn't have to have a referral. The Doctors are very good there. I have used them many times when I have had sick babies. Here is the ER Clinic: Animal Emergency Hospital of North Texas This is the Speciality Hospital: Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center Home Page |
I do hope she has taken this little one some where...the advice given here has been excellent. Hopefully she took it and her baby is being taken care of as we speak. All I can really add is my thoughts and prayers are definitely with you. |
Checking for an update. Still praying for this little girl. |
I'm hoping this is just due to her heat cycle. First heats can be rough on littles, and biggies too. My girl was noticibly off, just not herself, no appetite, mostly lethargic for a few days when she had her heat. |
Hopefully she is at A&M with Luvee and will update as soon a she can. Keeping Luvee in my prayers. |
Checking in on Luvee...hope they are at one of the specialists. Will check again later. Hope all is well with Luvee. |
Well, hopng for an update soon....... |
I was hoping for an update as well. I see that OP has signed on today at 3:00pm, but no posts have been made. I just hate when things like this happen. |
1 Attachment(s) Thank you all for the kind thoughts, posts and prayers. They are so appreciated AND FELT . Luvee and I are indeed in Aggieland. We arrived at 2:30 and by 2:35 she was under their care. :) I can't say enough about this place so far. They are very thorough. (I had signed on to Yorkie Talk to tell all that we'd arrived but a Dr. came in before I could get anything in my iPhone.) Her initial assessment of Luvee was good. She said she was in good health and walking around and that the nurses had already fallen in love with her. She said she was puzzled as to why I was there. I was persistent and said, "No offense Dr. but I know my dog better than you do at this point and she is not well, trust me, or I would not have driven 3.5 hours to have her evaluated". I then asked for more blood work and x-rays with sonograms of her abdomen. She agreed and said that it would be costly. I said I did not care one bit and that I wanted to the bottom of it. As I was checking into the hotel, my primary vet called to see how things were going. My vet is wonderful and he said that he was told by the attending vet that "I was persistent" and he said he was glad and that was the best way to obtain results. I do not leave any Dr's office unless I am satisfied with the information and results given. I'm a pain in their behind but it is my (our) right to get the best care along with the correct answers. ******* FYI, you do need a referral from your primary vet before they will admit your baby so be aware of that. Also, this place is so easy to find. It is on (426) University Dr/Raymond Stotzer Blvd. Just in case anyone needs to plug it into their phone, the Small Animal Clinic no. is 979-845-2351. ******* Things to mention on Luvee's history. I had indeed taken her to the emergency hospital in Grapevine. I do like that place. Dr. Speed was very thorough and she was the first vet to get stumped. She had mentioned pyometra but dismissed it due to her blood test results, however, I did ask the attending vet here in College Station about it earlier. They will look into it also. I got a phone call shortly after checking into the hotel and the intern asked me to come back to discuss some findings and results from the blood tests. Needless to say I was a wreck driving there. The attending vet sat down with me and said that the blood results had declined a bit. What has me stumped is that the vet said Luvee is not dehydrated. I guess I forced it enough to her. Luvee's x-rays and sonogram will be first thing in the morning. If those tests turn out to be inconclusive then next will be the internist department and a brain scan for GME (at my request). Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thank you all so much for your support. |
