How long do Doggie laxatives take to Work? - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Okay as some of You know My 3 year old Yorkie Mitsi was Spayed last Thursday. She was fine until about 3 days later, She was straining to poop and when She finally did it was hard. So My vet called Me in antibiotics and a laxative for Her. (SHES NOT GONE IN 3 DAYS EXCEPT FOR ONE OR 2 TINY DROPS) Shes acting lazy and sick but eating well. I gave Her 1 dose 8 hours ago and just gave Her another but so far no poopy. I feel so helpless, Shes not Herself and seems to tired to play, I know Shes worn out from being sick and being hauled off to the vet everyday. Has anyone experienced this before? Also If anyone wants to know The laxative is a green slimy liquid She has to swallow every 8 hours. Thanks for reading snd all the support.

I would think the laxative would work within 12-24 hours. If nothing, it may be time to get a bit more aggressive with her treatment... like an xray to see what's going on inside her and run bloodwork. also try a liquified, bland diet for a day or two.

When Mandie was constipated after her spay, the vet gave her some little round gelcap looking stool softners (can't remember the name). In addition to those, though, I gave her some mineral oil on her food and fed her some more fiber.

They did an enema on her, too. Your vet may need to do an enema on Mitsi. I'd definitely go back up there if Mitsi hasn't pooped by mid day.

Just wanted to say Mitsi finally pooped!!!!! I took Her back to the vet this morning and they did a little digging and found that She wasnt constipated. Apparently She was scared to poop because it must have hurt the first time She did after surgery. Anyways a few Hours after I had Her at the vet We went walking and She finally did poop. thanks for answering everyone

I was wondering how she was doing, thanks for the update, that first poop after surgery can be painful. By the way, adding a tablespoon of canned pumpkin, not the pie filling can add fiber so that it's easier to poop. It's great to have on hand because it works to clear up constipation as well as diarrhea. Glad Mitsi feeling better!
